Chapter 60: He’s Already Been Disabled by Me
“Aah…”
The scream, as if a pig was being slaughtered, cut through the night air, echoing from afar.
“No, please, no…” Li Erxia’s voice cracked with desperation.
The villagers, fearing Hu Zhaodi would turn her wrath on their daughters, dared not intervene. They merely hid in the shadows, watching the spectacle from a distance.
Zhang Gousheng bent over, his body curled up in a pitiful heap on the ground.
Hu Zhaodi slowly crouched down, her eyes filled with an unmistakable murderous intent. “Choose one: a divorce or a repudiation.”
Zhang Gousheng’s eyes were wide with fear. Hu Zhaodi’s gaze was so terrifying that he didn’t even have the courage to look at her.
Divorce was bad enough for his reputation, but repudiation? That would ruin him entirely.
Li Erxia screamed, “Gousheng, divorce her! Let her take the two useless daughters and leave right now!”
Han Dongsheng, with a terrifying glare, snarled, “Shut the hell up!”
Li Erxia recoiled, shrinking back, and moved to the side.
Zhang Gousheng trembled as he stammered, “I… I choose divorce.”
Hu Zhaodi raised an eyebrow. “Good. Be at the county office by noon tomorrow to sign the divorce papers. If you’re not there, then your sister Chunhua will be the one getting repudiated.”
“Yes, I’ll be there,” Zhang Gousheng quickly agreed.
Hu Zhaodi flashed a brief smile, then stood and turned to Ji Chunhua. “Sister Chunhua, take your two children and gather your things. Take everything that’s yours, including your dowry.”
Ji Chunhua hesitated. Her dowry included many large items—tables, chairs, cabinets, boxes—most of which were from her family’s side.
“Zhaodi, we didn’t bring a bullock cart. We might not be able to take everything.”
Hu Zhaodi responded, “No problem. Take the valuable things first. As for the large dowry items—tables, chairs, cabinets, and such—if we can’t take them, we’ll burn them. We won’t leave anything for these animals.”
“Okay,” Ji Chunhua nodded in agreement and pulled her two children into the room to pack.
Li Erxia was stunned, her voice rising in a heart-wrenching wail, “No, Chunhua! You can’t take all the dowry! If you take it, how will Gousheng and I live?”
“Hmm?” Hu Zhaodi frowned and turned to Li Erxia. “How did you survive before Chunhua married into your family? You lived the same way then, so just continue that way now.”
“No! You can’t do this! You have to leave us something to survive!”
“Get lost!” Hu Zhaodi spat coldly, then turned to the three Ji brothers. “Brothers, you know what Chunhua’s dowry contains. Go ahead and move the large items out.”
“Got it.” The three brothers agreed and immediately entered Zhang Gousheng’s house.
Before long, they had carried out Ji Chunhua’s large dowry items.
Good grief! There really was a lot.
When Ji Chunhua’s father, worried about his daughter’s future, had ordered a carpenter to make several large items, he hadn’t spared any expense.
The Zhang family had originally been poor, with hardly any furniture at all.
Ji Chunhua, carrying her three bundles of belongings, walked out of the house with her children.
Ji Chunhua’s older brother said, “Zhaodi, it seems a shame to burn these large items. Can we take them back for our parents to use?”
Hu Zhaodi nodded. “Sure, take what you can back. If we can’t, then we’ll burn them.”
The three Ji brothers, strong farm men, helped Ji Chunhua tie up the large furniture with ropes, ready to carry them back.
Meanwhile, Hu Zhaodi, Ji Chunhua, Han Dongsheng, and Wu Yinghai took the smaller furniture like tables and chairs.
Two young girls picked up their bundles.
“Let’s go home,” Hu Zhaodi called out, and the group left the Zhang family’s house.
Li Erxia and her son wailed and cursed Ji Chunhua, calling her heartless. Nine years of marriage, and now they were left with nothing.
With a flick of her wrist, Hu Zhaodi picked up a small stone and hurled it at Li Erxia, precisely knocking out her two front teeth.
The little stone accidentally rolled into Li Erxia’s throat, making her clutch her neck and cough violently, almost hacking up a lung.
Zhang Gousheng crawled over to Li Erxia, patting her back until she nearly choked; finally, she coughed up the stone.
By this time, Hu Zhaodi and her group had already walked far away.
Under the moonlight, they moved at a steady pace.
Once they were out of the village, Wu Yinghai finally voiced a question he’d been holding back.
“Brother Han, does our Lingxiao Country even have a tradition of divorcing husbands?”
Han Dongsheng raised an eyebrow and chuckled. “No, that was just to scare that scoundrel Zhang. If he had traveled around a bit and seen the world, he’d know those words were all made up.”
Hu Zhaodi smiled faintly. “Exactly. We were just taking advantage of Zhang Gousheng’s ignorance. This is the difference between someone who can read and someone who can’t.”
The three Ji brothers and Ji Chunhua suddenly understood.
From now on, no matter how tough it got, they had to make sure their kids went to school and saw more of the world.
When Hu Zhaodi’s group returned to Dawai Village, it was already midnight.
The Ji brothers, carrying large pieces of furniture, were drenched in sweat but wore big, honest smiles.
Ji Chunhua had finally freed herself from that beastly husband and could return to a normal life.
Hu Zhaodi spoke up, “Sister Chunhua, for now, you can stay with Uncle and Auntie. Once my house is built, you and the kids can all come live with me. The more, the merrier.”
Eldest Brother Ji added, “Chunhua, now that you’re back, just settle down. With Zhaodi helping us hunt and gather medicinal herbs, life will only get better.”
Hu Zhaodi nodded. “Exactly. Besides hunting and gathering herbs, we can start growing our own. That’s all for next spring, though. Now that you’re back, there’s plenty to do, so don’t worry about making a living.”
Ji Chunhua’s face lit up with gratitude. “Yes, as long as I can feed my two children, I can handle any hardship.”
“When the private school is built, your kids can go too. Sister Chunhua, your best days are yet to come.”
Han Dongsheng suddenly remembered something and asked, “Zhaodi, didn’t you say you’d ruin Zhang Gousheng so he’d be left childless? When are you planning to do that?”
Hu Zhaodi gave a playful grin. “I already took care of that. He won’t be having any kids in the future.”
Han Dongsheng looked astonished. “Huh? How did you do it? I didn’t even notice.”
Hu Zhaodi laughed. “Brother Han, do you remember when I punched Zhang Gousheng in the jaw?”
“Yes, I remember.”
“Well, when he stumbled back, I hit him in the stomach too. I struck hard—and I hit right on his guanyuan acupuncture point.”
Han Dongsheng suddenly understood. “Ah, so that’s why you didn’t need to go further! You’d already handled it quietly. Hahaha…”
Wu Yinghai gave her a thumbs-up. “Zhaodi, impressive! Knowing medicine is something else. With just a flick of the fingers, you made sure a scoundrel got exactly what he deserved.”
