“I knew she was no good, always slouching and stooping like she’s got no backbone.”
“Exactly. That whole family’s rotten. Shen Meng was always stirring up trouble, and now she finally got what was coming—drowned in the river. Just look at her husband. Used to be a fine man, but she dragged him down to nothing.”
“And those kids of theirs—ugh! The eldest is a thief, stealing chickens, brawling, and even harassing married women. The second son is even worse, caught doing black-market deals and even daring to curse his aunt. Heaven’s wrath will find him, for sure. Poor Xiao Ni though, forced to marry some old man decades older.”
“Hah! Maybe she likes it. You old hags sure are nosy.”
Hearing the harsh words, Shen Meng found herself watching a blurred scene before her eyes. Though she had a vague sense she was dreaming, she felt an unbearable sadness seeing a disheveled man on the ground. Hearing about the fates of the three children, her heart ached even more. She tried to step closer, to make out the man’s face, wondering why she kept having these strange, unsettling dreams.
“Shen Meng! Where are you? Come back… Mengmeng!”
Suddenly, she jolted awake, staring up at the ceiling. Something didn’t feel right. Ever since she’d gone to that fortuneteller on the bridge, her life had been spiraling into strangeness.
That day, she had walked by a fortune-telling stall on her way home from work. The old man told her that she was his first customer in days, so out of kindness, she’d asked for a reading.
The old man claimed her life was plagued with misfortune and that danger was imminent. He told her that if she bought his “888 Bad Luck Cleansing Package,” her future would be filled with wealth, children, and long life.
She had to admit, she’d been having a rough few days, with her deals at work slipping through her fingers. Figuring it couldn’t hurt, she paid the 888 yuan, hoping it might turn her luck around.
And strangely enough, the next day, she landed a huge contract worth millions. But before she could sign it, she got into a serious car accident on her way to meet the client. She spent a month in the ICU and survived, gaining a 1.8 million yuan insurance settlement and a 1.6 million yuan compensation package from her company. But her uterus was removed during the surgery—where was the “blessing of children” in that?
Then, life decided to play another cruel joke on her.
She began having bizarre dreams every night, where she lived someone else’s life. In these dreams, she had three sons and a daughter, but her life was miserable, shunned by everyone around her.
Shen Meng wanted to find that fortuneteller to demand answers. What kind of “cleansing package” was this? Wealth through an accident settlement? Children that weren’t her own? And if a long life meant being hated for a hundred years, maybe dying sooner was the better option!
She went back to the bridge several times, but the fortune-teller’s stall was nowhere to be found.
Yesterday was even stranger. She discovered she somehow had an extra-dimensional storage space!
As a child of the internet age, Shen Meng had read her fair share of novels about transmigration. Could this be a sign? Was she really about to become that woman in her dreams, forced to live a life in another era?
If that were the case, she couldn’t go empty-handed.
Money from today’s world would be useless in the past, and she couldn’t take her house or car with her either. Best to stock up on essentials to store in the space.
With a new plan in mind, Shen Meng started calculating her assets. Her apartment, in a prime location, could fetch about 6 million yuan, and her car might get her another 100,000 yuan if she sold it secondhand. Most of her earnings had gone into the property, leaving her only around 100,000 yuan in savings. Thankfully, the accident compensation totaled nearly 4 million yuan.
Early the next morning, Shen Meng quickly ate breakfast, gathered her property deed and paperwork, and hurried to a real estate agency. She wanted cash immediately and was willing to accept a lower price, but it had to be a full payment—she couldn’t risk a loan dragging out the timeline. She didn’t know when she might disappear, so the quicker she could handle this, the better.
Once she entrusted the apartment to the agency, Shen Meng set off to begin her grand stockpiling.
