Chapter 103: Can’t Afford to Offend

I’m not going anywhere.

I’ll just stay with you.

Husband and wife should stick together, Jiang Mingyue said, taking Gu Dongqing’s arm and kissing him on the cheek.

Because you and my family are by my side, even if the sky falls, it won’t be so uncomfortable.”

Don’t worry, wife. I will give the thief what he deserves,” Gu Dongqing assured her.

Okay, she replied, trusting him completely.  He never made empty promises.

The next day, Gu Dongqing settled Xu Xueyou and then left for the county with him.  On the way, they discussed the situation at length.

At Sifang Department Store, Pei Che and Feng Yujun were both present. They listened to Gu Dongqing’s story with shocked expressions.

Is that really true?” Feng Yujun asked.

What did the person who delivered the admission notice do? He didn’t even check to see if the notice was delivered to the right person?” Pei Che added, incredulous.

“Really…” Pei Che couldn’t believe the postman’s negligence.

What should we do next? Feng Yujun asked Gu Dongqing.

We need to expose the truth and put Jiang Meixin behind bars,” Gu Dongqing declared.  She had stolen his wife’s college spot, and he wouldn’t let her get away with it.

Okay,” Feng Yujun agreed, supporting Gu Dongqing’s decision. “I don’t know anyone at Nanjing University, but I do know a few people in the city.” This was a matter that concerned their family, and they had to do everything they could.

Gu Dongqing nodded. “Okay.  If you need me, please contact me.”

“Are you going to the city?” Pei Che asked.

Gu Dongqing nodded again.

Pei Che’s eyes lit up. “Then it will take you two days to go back and forth. Don’t you have anyone at home to help with things?”

He was clearly trying to volunteer his services, but he was being too obvious.  He wanted to go to the town and help take care of the house for two days.

Gu Dongqing clicked his tongue, his gaze falling on Xu Xueyou, who was drinking tea nearby. “Comrade Xu is a student at Nanjing University.”

His words were confusing, leaving Pei Che bewildered for a moment.

But then, Gu Dongqing continued, “My sister-in-law’s younger sister wants to get into Nanjing University. I had a long chat with Comrade Xu yesterday.”

I saw them chatting happily from a distance,” Pei Che said, his voice laced with anxiety.

Oh, no, what do you mean, Fourth Brother?”  He was clearly aware of Gu Dongqing’s intentions regarding his sister-in-law’s sister, so why was he being so blunt?

Are you still a brother? Pei Che asked, his voice laced with hurt.

Gu Dongqing snorted. “What’s wrong with me?”

You..Pei Che hesitated, unable to confront Gu Dongqing directly.  He couldn’t offend him too much, considering he was both his brother and the brother-in-law of the woman he adored.

If he said something bad, would Xinyue develop a negative impression of him?

He turned to Feng Yujun for help. “Brother.”

Feng Yujun glanced at Pei Che, clearly not on his side. “If Dongzi is not at home, what does it mean for you to go to their house?”

No, isn’t this house filled with old, weak, women, and children?  What if someone, without thinking, offends my sister-in-law and the others?” Pei Che said, trying to justify his concern.

Feng Yujun turned to Gu Dongqing. “Dongzi, have you made arrangements?”

It’s been arranged, brother. Don’t worry,” Gu Dongqing replied.

Did you hear that?” Feng Yujun asked Pei Che.

Pei Che was speechless.  He couldn’t offend either of them, so he remained silent.

Gu Dongqing and Xu Xueyou set off for the city. Xu Xueyou, knowing where his professor lived, took Gu Dongqing directly to his door.

The university leaders were shocked upon hearing Xu Xueyou’s story.

This… is this really happening?” Professor Zhang exclaimed, standing up from his chair. “Something like impersonation happening in our school?”

Their university was known for its strict management, so they never imagined such a loophole existed.

Professor Zhang couldn’t believe it.

Gu Dongqing pulled out Jiang Mingyue’s high school test papers and essays from his bag. “These are my wife’s high school papers. She was always one of the top students in her class.”

Professor Zhang didn’t need any further explanation.  He could tell from the papers that Jiang Mingyue was a capable student. He knew that even if she had failed the college entrance exam, she would have still been able to get into a university.

This is a serious matter. I need to have a meeting with the principal and secretary to discuss how to handle this,” Professor Zhang said.

Gu Dongqing expected this response.

Professor Zhang quickly gathered the other university leaders for a meeting.  After a discussion, they decided to report the matter to the police.

Gu Dongqing contacted his former comrades and asked them to keep an eye on the police’s investigation.

After everything was settled, he returned to the town.

Back at the Gu family’s house, everyone had been keeping a close eye on Jiang Mingyue’s well-being, fearing that any sadness might affect the baby.

But Jiang Mingyue was in good spirits, smiling and eating normally.  She even went to the stall with Gu Dongqing in the morning.

Mrs. Jiang, seeing her granddaughter laughing and chatting with customers, felt a mix of joy and guilt.  If she and the old man hadn’t been oblivious, the second family wouldn’t have been able to steal Mingyue’s college admission notice.

The old lady felt conflicted, forcing a smile.

This worried Jiang Mingyue.

Grandma, she said softly, taking the old lady’s hand. “No one could have imagined that Jiang Meixin and her family could be so cruel. This has nothing to do with you and grandpa.”

She never expected Jiang Meixin to be so ruthless, to the point of stealing an admission notice.  Such a thing was unthinkable.

Mrs. Jiang, understanding her granddaughter’s feelings, shook her head and gently stroked her face. “My poor second girl, why do you think God always catches your sisters for bullying?”

Miscellaneous,” Jiang Mingyue started to say, but a condescending voice interrupted her.

Dumpling seller, give me two cages of dumplings.

Jiang Mingyue looked up, as did everyone else in the stall.
