Chapter 77: Determined to Divorce
Mao Lihua, a straightforward woman and the village’s women’s director, had noticed Jiang Meiyue’s condition earlier but couldn’t inquire due to the crowd. Now, with Jiang Mingyue’s request, she willingly went inside to check on her.
Leaving the table, Mao Lihua and Jiang Meiyue entered the room. Jiang Mingyue continued to talk to the other female elders, while Mrs. Jiang, wiping away tears, whispered about Jiang Meiyue’s situation to those present.
The men invited tonight were all upright, and their wives were equally straightforward. They wouldn’t gossip like the women at the village entrance. Jiang Mingyue knew she had to be cautious when dealing with her eldest sister, as rumors could easily spread.
Upon hearing Jiang Meiyue’s experience, everyone condemned the Hu family for their cruelty.
Meiyue is such a good girl, how could they treat her so badly?”
Yeah, Zhu Guihua also has a daughter. Why can’t she show empathy? After her daughter got married, she was treated as harshly as Meiyue by her husband’s family. I’m afraid she would have given up.”
“It’s not that bad. It’s too bullying.”
Everyone present was furious.
Old Mrs. Jiang, wiping her tears with her one good eye, said, “It’s all my fault that the eldest couple left early. Her father and I were incompetent, so our granddaughter was bullied like this.”
“Miscellaneous…”
Jiang Mingyue, unable to bear seeing anyone cry, felt her own tears welling up. The old lady’s tears made her want to cry too. Many people at the table had tears in their eyes, and those sitting next to Mrs. Jiang also had red eyes, silently wiping their tears.
From inside the house, Mao Lihua exclaimed, “Oh my god, what evil has this done?”
People outside strained their ears, eager to hear what was happening.
Mao Lihua’s voice continued, “It’s too much for them to treat you like this. It’s really too much. This Hu Wenguang is simply not a human being…”
A few minutes later, they walked out of the room, Mao Lihua’s face showing both tears and anger. It was clear that what she had seen inside was not good.
Pulling Jiang Meiyue forward, Mao Lihua asked her to remove the gauze from her neck, revealing clear fingerprints on the medicated skin. The purple marks were particularly frightening.
That’s not all,” Mao Lihua said. “Meiyue also has injuries of various sizes on her body…”
She didn’t specify where the injuries were, but everyone understood. They looked at each other, anger burning in their eyes.
How could the Hu family treat people so badly? This was a daughter-in-law! How could a family commit such a murderous act?
The atmosphere was tense. Jiang Mingyue, glancing at the time, winked at Jiang Meiyue.
Jiang Meiyue said, “Grandpas, grandma, party secretary, and village chief, I really can’t survive in Kaoshan Village.”
Her eyes turned red as she pulled Hu Yaya to her side. “The Hu family dislikes me for not having a son. They don’t treat me like a human being, just letting me work day and night to support the whole family. They should never do anything to Yaya.”
As she spoke, she removed the gauze from Hu Yaya’s neck, revealing finger marks. Pulling back Hu Yaya’s sleeves, everyone saw old scars on her arms and legs. It was clear the mother and daughter in the Hu family had not lived a human life.
Jiang Meiyue had people look at Hu Yaya’s injuries and then pulled her aside. With tears in her eyes, she addressed everyone in the yard.
I have decided to divorce Hu Wenguang. Today I want my elders to bear witness for me about how the Hu family treated me. Old Mrs. Hu will come to the door one day to make trouble.
When the villagers are making up lies, if all the grandparents and uncles hear this, please help me and prove it to others.
I have never been sorry for the old Hu family. It’s the old Hu family who didn’t give our mother and daughter a way to survive.”
With choked eyes and silent tears, she stood there and bowed deeply to the audience.
Everyone in the yard was moved by Jiang Meiyue’s sincere words.
Outside the yard, two figures stood in the shadows, having returned to retrieve something they had forgotten.
They had heard everything Jiang Meiyue said and watched the courtyard with deep eyes. They didn’t go in, remaining in the darkness.
The sisters in my sister-in-law’s family have really worked hard,” Pei Che sighed.
He started to walk into the courtyard, but Feng Yujun stopped him.
“Okay.”
He held Pei Che’s arm, preventing him from entering and ruining the atmosphere. It was probably to save Jiang Meiyue’s face. This was a painful past that Jiang Meiyue couldn’t easily talk about.
It was courageous of her to tell the village elders. It would be better for outsiders like them not to know about it.
Going back,” Feng Yujun said, turning towards the village office.
Hey, you just went back?” Pei Che chased after him. “Why did you just go back? Don’t you still want to ask the fourth child something?”
It makes the same difference whether you ask or not.” They were outside the yard just now, and Dongzi probably already noticed.
He would take the initiative to contact them tomorrow when he was free.
“Huh…”
Pei Che scratched his head. Okay, brother has the final say. He turned his head and glanced at the brightly lit Jiang family yard, followed Feng Yujun in a few steps, and began to give him his bad ideas.
Brother, how about I find some people to beat up my eldest sister’s ex-husband?”
This man can even beat his own wife. He is so inhuman. I have to beat him all over the place.”
Pei Che gritted his teeth, feeling like he was being bullied.
Feng Yujun glanced at Pei Che next to him, Jiang Meiyue’s thin image flashing before his eyes. He pursed his lips and said rudely, “You came back from the army, not from jail. You can always use violence to solve problems?”
“Huh…”
Feng Yujun sneered, not denying it, but not recognizing it either.
The two of them left Qianqian Village.
The people who ate at Lao Jiang’s house helped clean up and went home.
Jiang Mingyue held Jiang Meiyue’s hand and whispered to her not to worry about her future life.
Sister, you have a good rest at home these days.
When you recover from your injury, you can go to town to help me sell things.
You don’t have to worry about the Hu family’s affairs.
I’ll let your brother-in-law handle it for you.”
