Chapter 27 – The Turning Point of the Su Family
The passing villagers: “!!!”
“This Zhang Wenliang is shameless! Even with Lu Jiajia in that condition, he’s still harassing the Su family girl?”
“Exactly! He won’t even let a dying person off—worse than an animal!”
Su Nianzhi, overhearing this: “???”
Thanks for defending me… but did you have to curse me like that?
Zhang Wenliang stared gloomily at the smug Su Nianzhi walking away.
His tongue tingled with bitterness.
Sickly girl, you’re getting cocky.
Just wait. Once I get into university, those people will be begging on their knees!
Su Nianzhi didn’t even need to think twice to know what that scumbag was plotting.
But… whether or not he could actually pass the entrance exam was another matter.
After all, accidents were pretty common during exam season.
“Su Nianzhi!”
Chen Wei jumped up dramatically and waved her over.
“Cannon Fodder No. 2?” Su Nianzhi skipped over with small, quick steps.
Qin Xiaoyun watched the girl approach. She was wearing new clothes—plain grey, yet they looked especially nice on her.
Her complexion looked much better too. Seemed like that century-old ginseng really worked.
He made a mental note to talk to Old Xiao again to see if they could get her some more.
“Su Nianzhi, your face looks so much brighter now,” Chen Wei teased, only to get an eye-roll.
“You haven’t even thanked him for the ginseng yet.”
Qin Xiaoyun paused, then shook his head. “As long as you’re better. That stuff’s not worth much.”
Chen Wei gawked. “Big bro, that was century-old ginseng, not a carrot! Even a hundred-year-old carrot would be worth something!”
Qin Xiaoyun shot Chen Wei a warning glare.
“I’ll get you some next time. Your health isn’t great either. Supplementing a little won’t hurt.”
Su Nianzhi wasn’t sure why, but Qin Xiaoyun’s gaze on her today felt… different.
A bit hot, even.
She instinctively stepped back and shook her head. “I’m much better now. I’ll find a way to repay you for the ginseng. Thanks.”
With that, she practically wanted to summon a firewheel under her feet and run away.
What the hell? Did Cannon Fodder No. 2 develop feelings for me or something?
Qin Xiaoyun realized he might’ve scared the girl off with his gaze.
He fell into thought.
Next time, he’d need to be more restrained.
A wolf hunting prey must always be patient.
Chen Wei stood on the side, watching his big bro.
He glanced at Su Nianzhi’s retreating back with sympathy.
She’s doomed. No escape now.
Su Nianzhi sneezed multiple times in a row.
Damn, who’s talking about me behind my back?
It scared Wang Guifang so much that she rushed out from the kitchen, muttering anxiously,
terrified her daughter was falling ill again.
“Big bro, she’s gone. You’re still staring?”
Qin Xiaoyun glanced toward the Zhang family’s gate.
With a faint expression, he turned and left.
Chen Wei: Oh boy. Another poor soul’s about to get caught. For real this time.
Meanwhile, Su Nianzhi was forcibly shoved into the house by her mother,
who practically wished she could sew her daughter to the bed.
Left with no choice, Su Nianzhi sat on the bed, planning to check her space.
Suddenly, her eyes lit up.
In the corner—
Wasn’t that the bag of books Lu Jiajia had brought back for Zhang Wenliang?
Let’s take a look.
She climbed down from the kang bed, disgustedly picked up the bag.
It was probably brought home by mistake by Wang Guifang, thinking it was hers.
Even though the original Su Nianzhi had never gone to school, her second and third brothers had. The eldest didn’t count.
He drooled every time he studied.
Their mom said she wasn’t born to study.
Even so, thanks to her two academically-inclined brothers—especially the third—she’d learned to read and write.
Sometimes, Su Zherui even mailed her books.
Now that she thought of it, her second brother didn’t go to college probably because they were too poor.
Her third brother had gotten into college but didn’t end up going—
Someone took him away, saying he was joining the military.
Su Nianzhi pulled out two books.
High school math.
And surprisingly—an English book.
Wow, Zhang Wenliang can even fart in English?
She immediately tossed the math book aside. She used to study advanced calculus in her past life—it nearly killed her.
The English book didn’t interest her much either.
She tossed it too, but a piece of paper slipped out.
Curious, she picked it up.
324-566-543-918
What the heck?
Some kind of secret code?
It was tucked inside the book.
She picked up the English book again and realized it was an English novel.
A love story, apparently.
Wait… Zhang Wenliang reads romance novels?
That’s… suspicious.
It only had 200 pages, so the numbers weren’t page references.
Must be a combination of something.
Su Nianzhi was smart. She tried a few combinations.
Still didn’t make sense.
Felt like she was solving some kind of cryptic puzzle.
Then it hit her—
29 Yulin Road.
Where was that?
Who asked him to go there?
She found this strange.
Thinking back to the first three episodes of this drama, there weren’t any real clues.
Looks like she’d have to check it out herself.
Then suddenly—
A flash of light exploded in her mind.
She almost missed something very important.
In the first three episodes, the Su family met a horrible end.
Even though she’d averted some of that by transmigrating here…
Su Zhewen was about to have an accident.
In her past life, after Su Nianzhi died, her family fell into despair.
Her eldest brother fell from a house while helping build one for the Shuisheng family.
He became completely paralyzed.
Later, unwilling to burden the family—
He committed suicide.
That broke Wang Guifang completely.
Later, Su Zhewui discovered the accident was caused by the Zhang family.
He tried to get revenge—
Only to be framed, and had his leg broken.
One blow after another. Wang Guifang couldn’t handle it.
She passed away soon after.
At this point, Su Nianzhi couldn’t sit still.
She shouted, “Mom! Mom!”
Wang Guifang dropped her firewood in shock. “What is it, Nian’er? Are you feeling unwell again?”
Su Nianzhi quickly shook her head.
“Mom, where’s big brother?”
“Your big brother? He just said he was heading to the village—Shuisheng’s family is building a house. He went to help.”
Su Nianzhi panicked.
That can’t happen!
She sprinted out toward the Shuisheng household.
But where was it?
She happened to see Qin Xiaoyun stacking lumber at the entrance.
Panting, she asked, “Qin Xiaoyun, where’s Shuisheng’s house?”
Seeing her so flustered, Qin Xiaoyun replied,
“I’ll take you there.”
She followed him in a jog.
Sure enough, not far off—
She saw her big brother, carrying two thick logs, standing on the roof.
Opposite him was a dark-skinned young man.
She vaguely remembered this guy—
Wasn’t he a nephew of the Zhang family?
Su Nianzhi instantly noticed the shifty look in the guy’s eyes.
“Su Zhewen, take two steps forward, I’ll move back.”
It was normal for young, strong men to raise beams during construction.
Su Zhewen was tall and strong, and knew a bit of masonry and carpentry, so the village often relied on him.
He cheerfully responded,
“Zhang Aping, you move back.”
Then Su Nianzhi saw it—
Zhang Aping’s eyes shifted, and just as her brother turned—
He suddenly loosened his grip.
Without hesitation, Su Nianzhi focused her spiritual power—
She locked his body in place.
Zhang Aping, who had been preparing to sabotage, suddenly couldn’t move.
He panicked—
What’s happening?
Why can’t I move?
Right then, the beam was already in position.
Suddenly, both his feet tangled up, and—
He slipped off the roof.
