Chapter 28: Fighting Genes Are Hereditary
Everyone watched with wide eyes as Zhang Aping fell from above.
They were completely stunned.
Chaos immediately broke out.
“What are you all staring at? Hurry and take him to the clinic!”
A group of people scrambled to carry him off toward the village clinic.
But Zhang Aping kept yelling, “There’s a ghost! A ghost!”
The new village chief overheard him, walked right over, and gave him two loud slaps.
“You want to go to jail?!”
Zhang Aping shut his mouth immediately, trembling as he looked in horror at Su Zhewen still standing on the roof. He was certain it was Old Man Su who had pushed him.
Wasn’t this how his aunt’s mouth ended up crooked last time?
His heart instantly filled with hatred for Zhang Shangen—his own biological uncle—who had clearly set him up.
“Big Brother! Big Brother!” Su Nianzhi waved, almost bouncing up and down with excitement.
Seeing his little sister arrive, Su Zhewen quickly climbed down from the roof.
He wiped the sweat from his brow, his face smudged with dust.
“Zhizhi, what are you doing here?”
Su Nianzhi reached out with a handkerchief to wipe his sweat, completely unaware of a certain someone behind them who was staring at her with envy.
“I just remembered Grandma likes eating lamb. Could you bring her some?”
Su Zhewen nodded repeatedly. Grandma did love lamb.
“Then go home now, Ge. You can’t get any work done today anyway.”
They were just about to leave when a familiar figure appeared at the village entrance.
“My Zhizhi!!!”
Su Nianzhi froze. A memory surfaced—this was the original host’s grandmother, the elderly matron from the Wang family.
She was wearing handmade cloth shoes, a cross-front blouse on top, and black pants on the bottom. Her graying hair was combed back neatly and shining with oil.
Despite being in her sixties, the old lady was full of energy and walked quickly.
She rushed up and pulled Su Nianzhi into a hug, tears streaming down her wrinkled cheeks.
Her bony hands cupped Su Nianzhi’s face, full of affection and heartache.
“My precious baby, you’ve suffered. Are you feeling better now?”
“Grandma, slow down!” said a young man behind her, carrying two buckets on a pole. He ran up and smiled when he saw Su Nianzhi.
“Cousin! Cousin Brother!”
He turned to the old lady, grumbling, “Grandma, wait for me next time!”
Old Lady Wang shot him a disapproving look. “With a body like yours, back in the day no girl would’ve married you!”
Wang Jiaxi: ……
“Grandma, if you missed me, I would’ve gone to visit you. Why did you come all the way here?”
Grandma Wang, full name Wang Mingfang, used to be a young lady from a wealthy landowning family. During special political times, she had to marry Grandpa Wang to survive.
She barely escaped with her life, but even in old age, her past elegance and grace were still visible.
Su Nianzhi inherited much of her facial features from her grandmother.
That’s why the old couple and uncles from the Wang family doted on her so much.
“My little darling, Grandma heard you were about to die—I couldn’t sleep at all! If my old illness hadn’t flared up, I would’ve come days ago. You don’t know, when your uncle came back and told me, I almost followed you to the afterlife!”
The old woman kept rubbing Su Nianzhi’s hand, clearly loving her dearly.
“Grandma, it’s true what they say about genetics—you and Mom are exactly the same. Just now she said she was going to send your favorite lamb.”
Grandma Wang’s face lit up with a smile. Su Nianzhi suddenly thought: Beauty lies in the bones, not just the skin.
Her grandma was genuinely good-looking.
“My Zhizhi is the best! By the way, I saw some young man from your village fall from the roof just now. You’d better be careful.”
Su Zhewen scratched his head sheepishly.
“Hahaha, Grandma, I’m sturdy!”
The old lady laughed kindly. This eldest grandson of the Su family—who knew who he took after? So naïve.
Then she noticed Qin Xiaoyun standing nearby. Her eyes lit up—this young man was quite handsome!
“Grandma Wang,” Qin Xiaoyun greeted her politely.
“Oh! And you are?”
“Grandma, this is Qin Xiaoyun.”
Grandma Wang nodded with a smile. “Oh, oh! From the Qin family! Good kid.”
“Grandma, let’s go home. Mom will be so happy to see you,” Su Nianzhi said, then turned to smile at Qin Xiaoyun. “Thanks, Qin Xiaoyun. I’ll head back now.”
Qin Xiaoyun looked at her radiant smile, a trace of doting flashing in his eyes.
“No need to thank me. Take your time on the way.”
“Move aside, move aside!”
Wang Jiaxi shifted his shoulder pole, squeezing Qin Xiaoyun off to the side.
This kid didn’t seem like he had good intentions.
Qin Xiaoyun: The path to winning a wife is long and winding.
When Wang Guifang saw her mother arrive, she was overjoyed and bustled around energetically.
The whole family was enjoying a lively dinner when suddenly a crowd showed up outside.
They sat on the ground, crying loudly.
Zhang Aping’s mother was bawling with snot and tears, shouting:
“Guifang! Your eldest is so cruel! He made my Aping fall from the beam! The doctor says it’s permanent—he’ll be paralyzed for life! Heartless monsters!”
Next to her, Zhang Aping’s grandma held a hatchet.
“If you don’t give me an explanation today, this old woman will die right here on your doorstep!”
“I want to see if there’s any justice left in this world!”
“Village Chief, you’ve got to stand up for us. He’ll need care for life!”
The neighbors, sharp as foxes, picked up on the subtext immediately—they wanted Su Nianzhi to marry the now-paralyzed Aping and take care of him.
A sickly girl matched with a paralyzed man.
Many in the village were mocking the Su family behind their backs.
Suddenly, an old woman stormed out of the Su household.
“You old hag! Extorting people now? And even trying it on my granddaughter?”
“Didn’t you say you’d die here? Fine! Let this old lady help you!”
With that, Grandma Wang grabbed the hatchet and raised it high—about to strike Zhang Aping’s grandma.
Su Nianzhi suddenly understood where her mother’s combativeness came from.
Turns out, fighting spirit really can be inherited!
Zhang Aping’s grandma shuddered in terror. A foul smell followed—she’d peed herself in fright.
Why was this tiger of a woman from the Wang family here?
Everyone knew that Wang Guifang’s mother had killed Japanese soldiers back in the day. Her hands had seen blood, and she’d protected her family single-handedly.
“You’ve got no justice! You hurt my boy and won’t admit it… My Aping was pushed by your eldest!”
Su Nianzhi walked over coldly.
“I saw exactly how Zhang Aping fell. And so did Shuisheng from the Lu family, and him, and her, and him…”
She pointed to several people in the crowd.
A few young folks stepped forward. “That’s right. We can testify. Zhang Aping tripped on his own. It had nothing to do with Su Zhewen.”
With that, the Zhang family’s faces darkened.
“You filthy little liar! Framing my eldest son like that. Jiaxi! Call the police. I don’t believe the authorities would wrong us!”
Zhang Aping’s grandma deflated immediately.
“Mother, let’s go home.”
Zhang Shangen stepped out from the crowd, shooting a sour glance at the Su family.
He was glared at in return by the old woman.
Su Erge (Second Brother Su) came in from outside.
“Let’s call the police. We won’t tolerate false accusations.”
Just as he finished speaking, they saw Qin Xiaoyun leading uniformed officers toward them.
