Chapter 8: A Rabbit Gone Mad, Crashing Around Inside
Dragging the rabbit, she headed toward the river.
Qin Xiaoyun’s fingers twitched as he held his bow and arrow.
He was mainly afraid she’d run into danger—that’s why he followed to protect her.
She was so delicate—what if something happened?
After giving himself a mental pep talk, Qin Xiaoyun silently followed behind her.
He watched as she walked toward the riverbank.
Suddenly, the metallic stench of blood hit his nose.
He knew that smell too well.
Danger.
The clear riverbank was covered in stones, stained with patches of dark red.
A large deer lay off to the side, its neck clearly torn open.
Its body twitched uncontrollably.
Su Nianzhi frowned slightly at the sight. The deer had been mauled badly.
Still… it might be salvageable.
She pinned the rabbit to a tree and slowly slid down a small slope.
Through her spiritual sense, she knew the two wolves had encountered something and had headed off a short distance away.
Su Nianzhi calmly locked her gaze on the deer’s corpse.
She had to move fast—she didn’t want to end up in a brawl with the wolves later.
She had experience, and she didn’t like the taste of wolf meat.
Too sour.
Maybe it was because the wolves in the apocalypse had mutated.
Step by step, she approached the deer, already planning how to bring it back.
The deer, barely hanging on to life, looked at her pitifully.
Su Nianzhi could only whisper an apology.
Amen.
She crouched and touched its fur.
Such a pity—it was torn up too badly.
Qin Xiaoyun frowned at the girl’s actions. She really was young.
Didn’t know what danger was.
Still had the heart to pity a deer—she looked like she was about to cry.
Her fair little hand even patted the deer’s body—clearly heartbroken.
Just then, Su Nianzhi suddenly lifted her head. A cold glint flashed through her eyes.
A pair of green eyes stared at her from not far away.
Turns out, one of the wolves had snuck back—reluctant to give up its prey.
Neither the wolf nor Su Nianzhi moved.
The gray wolf glanced at the deer’s wounds, clearly signaling that the kill was his. Its nose twitched, back arched.
Its tail raised into a combat stance.
It bared its sharp fangs.
Then suddenly leapt—lunging straight at Su Nianzhi.
Su Nianzhi grinned.
Too slow.
Compared to the wolves in the apocalypse, this was like a baby chick.
Just as she was about to counterattack—
A streak of silver tore through the air.
Whoosh—an arrow shot straight at the wolf’s head.
Thud—the sound of arrow piercing flesh.
The wolf dropped from midair to the ground.
It didn’t even get the chance to howl.
Dead.
Su Nianzhi spun around—and saw a man, bow in hand, leaping down from the slope.
Wasn’t this the cannon-fodder Qin-something—whose fiancée had cheated on him and who died before episode two?
His gaze burned as he stared at the deer by her feet.
Suddenly, Su Nianzhi panicked.
He wasn’t trying to steal her deer, was he?
She grabbed the deer’s leg and tried to stand up to drag it away.
But this body was too weak.
The moment she stood, she staggered.
She almost fell.
Qin Xiaoyun saw her so terrified she could barely stand and felt a sharp pang in his heart.
Still timid.
Seeing such a big wolf must’ve scared her senseless.
Didn’t even know how to run.
His tone unconsciously softened.
“Are you alright?”
Seeing the dazed look on her face, he added reassuringly,
“The wolf’s dead. You don’t have to be scared anymore.”
Su Nianzhi looked at the wolf: ????
Looks like… he wasn’t here to steal her deer.
Instantly, she smiled.
Her bright eyes lit up, and her smile sparkled like a dazzling gem.
Qin Xiaoyun felt his heart pounding—thump thump—like a mad rabbit crashing around in his chest.
Over and over again.
He forcibly calmed his racing emotions.
Even his voice dropped a bit lower.
“You should head back soon. It’s not safe here. The wolves might return at any time.”
Two small dimples appeared at the corners of Su Nianzhi’s mouth. “Thank you.”
Her voice was soft and gentle, sweet and cloying, just like those dimples—utterly intoxicating.
That was it. Qin Xiaoyun thought he must be a beast.
He actually wanted to pounce on the girl in front of him.
He recited military discipline in his heart.
Calm down, calm down…
Quickly, he walked over and pulled the arrow from the wolf’s body.
Turning back, he saw the girl still standing there, unmoving.
Her eyes were sweeping over the dead deer on the ground.
His tongue pressed against his back teeth.
“I’ll give the deer to you. I’ll bring it back for you later.”
Su Nianzhi had just been thinking: No, they should split it half and half. After all, he did save her.
There was no way she could have killed that wolf on her own—people would think she was a monster.
Even if it hurt to give up half the deer…
But reality meant she couldn’t be greedy.
Sob.
And now, hearing Qin Xiaoyun say he didn’t want it, that she could have it all—
Su Nianzhi’s smile widened. “Then the wolf is yours, and the deer is mine.”
Qin Xiaoyun saw how obedient she looked, those bright eyes glimmering with cleverness.
He couldn’t help but laugh.
His voice deepened, “Alright.”
Su Nianzhi saw him smile at her and silently sighed in her heart.
Sigh… A handsome man, kind too—too bad he doesn’t live long.
What kind of brain-dead screenwriter wrote this show?
Qin Xiaoyun carried the deer on one shoulder and dragged the wolf with the other.
“Let’s go.”
Su Nianzhi followed behind him with tiny steps. Hmm, he had good stamina too—those muscles rippled visibly with every movement.
In the apocalypse, he’d be a great zombie-slayer.
Suddenly, she thought of something.
“Wait.”
Qin Xiaoyun turned and watched the girl climb back up the slope, sticking out her little butt.
Her curves…
He scolded himself in his head again.
Qin Xiaoyun, when did you become this kind of man?
Are you even human?
She’s just a girl!
He quickly looked away.
Then he saw her dragging three rabbits down, panting, her little face flushed red.
“Need help?”
“No, no, I’ve got it.”
“You came alone?”
Su Nianzhi shook her head. “My nephew’s ahead.”
She pointed forward with her pale, scallion-like fingers. Under the sunlight, Qin Xiaoyun felt like he was going insane.
He actually wanted to cradle the girl in his arms and play with her hands.
No one knew—he had a strange fetish.
He liked pretty things.
Especially pretty hands.
And this girl… he liked everything about her.
The more Qin Xiaoyun thought, the more his mind wandered.
Until a little voice in his head smacked him awake—
You’re a soldier. How can you have such filthy thoughts?!
Su Nianzhi had no idea what he was thinking.
She quietly followed in his footsteps. She had actually noticed something when Qin Xiaoyun appeared just now—
Her spiritual sense hadn’t detected him at all.
