Chapter 9: Qin Xiaoyun Is a Bug? No Worries, He Won’t Survive Episode Two
In the apocalypse, you had to be cautious about everything. The reason she had survived so well—eventually even earning the title of Female Soldier King—
was entirely due to her powerful mental abilities.
There were only two situations in which her psychic ability couldn’t detect anything:
First the other party had a stronger psychic ability than hers.
Second the other party was dead.
Her gaze flickered with suspicion. The person in front of her definitely didn’t seem to have any abilities.
Dead? That didn’t seem right either.
Something was odd.
Could her psychic powers be bugged?
Su Nianzhi silently pondered this possibility and sent out a wisp of spiritual energy to probe Qin Xiaoyun.
But it felt like tossing a rock into the ocean.
No response whatsoever.
This guy might really be a bug in the system.
But no big deal—he wouldn’t survive past the second episode anyway.
Besides, it didn’t seem like he was an enemy of hers or the Su family.
So… it should be fine.
As they walked, Qin Xiaoyun noticed the girl lagging behind, her steps unsteady.
He turned and met her bright eyes.
“You can walk slowly, there’s no rush.”
Su Nianzhi saw him deliberately slowing down to match her pace.
She smiled.
“Thank you.”
Qin Xiaoyun’s heart bloomed with joy. Her soft, sweet voice lingered in his ears, and the tips of his ears turned a little red.
Neither of them said another word as they made their way through the woods.
Sunlight filtered through the trees, bathing them in a peaceful, golden glow.
“Aunt~”
“Aunt~”
Not far away, Su Nianzhi heard Su Maomao’s voice calling out.
She quickly replied, “Maomao, I’m here!”
Su Maomao, who had been picking kiwi fruits, turned and couldn’t see her—he was so frightened he nearly lost his soul.
If little aunt was gone, he couldn’t live either!
He bolted toward Su Nianzhi like a small cannonball.
“Little aunt, are you okay?”
“Maomao, I’m fine. Look, I picked up some rabbits!”
Only then did Su Maomao notice the three rabbits she was dragging behind her.
His eyes went wide in shock.
“L-Little Aunt, you actually found rabbits?”
Su Nianzhi chuckled, “They suddenly rammed into a tree stump and died. I’m not sure why.”
Su Maomao was overjoyed. It seemed unbelievable, but then he thought—Grandma always said his little aunt was a fairy from heaven. She must be blessed.
He started laying on the flattery.
“Little Aunt, you’re the best!”
“Ahem.”
Su Maomao finally noticed Qin Xiaoyun standing nearby.
“Uncle Xiaoyun?”
Qin Xiaoyun nodded.
Su Maomao looked at the bow slung at his waist and the wolf and deer he was carrying.
With a boy’s natural admiration for strength, his eyes sparkled with worship.
“Uncle Xiaoyun, you’re amazing! You caught a wolf and a deer!”
He was full of envy. One day, he wanted to be just like that—
So Little Aunt could eat meat every day, and get better.
The little guy’s thoughts were simple; that was all he cared about.
Qin Xiaoyun pointed at the deer on his shoulder and glanced at Su Nianzhi.
“This deer was picked up by your little aunt.”
“What?!” Su Maomao exclaimed.
“Little Aunt, you’re incredible!”
Seeing the little guy so happy made Su Nianzhi feel good too.
“Maomao, did you finish picking the kiwis?”
“All done!” He ran over to his little basket proudly. “Look, Little Aunt, I only picked the best ones!”
“You’re the best, Maomao!”
He was glowing from her praise.
“Little Aunt, let’s hurry home. Grandma will get worried.”
“Mm.”
Su Nianzhi glanced at the rabbits in her hand.
In this era, even going into the mountains to hunt wasn’t something you could do openly.
What a headache.
Should she ask Maomao to go get someone?
Qin Xiaoyun seemed to guess what she was thinking by looking at her expression.
He said, “You and Maomao go back first. I’ll help you deliver the deer to your house later. As for the rabbits, take my basket.”
“Really?” Su Nianzhi looked up at him, her face full of joy.
“Mm.” Qin Xiaoyun nodded, inhaling the faint scent coming from her.
“I still have more game to collect. You head back first.”
With that reassurance, Su Nianzhi happily waved goodbye to him.
Watching her slightly frail figure coughing occasionally as she carried the large basket—
Qin Xiaoyun’s hand slowly tightened.
A girl like her should be pampered.
A glimmer flashed in his eyes, then he quickly suppressed it.
Qin Xiaoyun, you’re way too old for her.
——
Meanwhile, Su Nianzhi happily walked down the mountain with Su Maomao.
Just as they reached the base, they ran into Su Zhewen and Su Zhewu, who had come looking for them.
“Little sister, are you alright?”
Seeing her drenched in sweat, they felt terrible.
“Here, second brother will carry you.”
“No, let big brother.”
Su Nianzhi saw both of them squatting down, ready to give her a piggyback ride, and felt a little awkward.
She was a grown girl now—being carried by her brothers felt a bit inappropriate.
Not to mention those big buns in front…
She tugged on their sleeves. “Big Brother, Second Brother, I’m fine. It’s just hot. You can carry the basket.”
“I can walk on my own.”
“Big Brother, you carry Maomao’s basket—it’s really heavy.”
Su Zhewen gave a goofy smile. “Son, let Dad carry that.”
“Dad, I’m not tired! Look—I picked kiwi fruit with Little Aunt today!”
“You went into the mountains?”
Su Zhewu frowned slightly.
Maomao tugged on Su Nianzhi’s pant leg and tilted his head. “Second Uncle, we only went a little bit in.”
“Second Brother…”
“Alright~~” Su Zhewu softened instantly when he heard her slightly coy tone.
“Just don’t go too deep next time, okay? It’s dangerous.”
“Got it!”
The group headed home.
They noticed the villagers standing around in small groups, whispering among themselves.
“Big Brother, Second Brother, what’s going on?”
Su Zhewu scoffed.
“The village chief’s house got robbed.”
“The police came but didn’t find anything. People say it’s karma for all the shady things he’s done.”
Su Nianzhi’s expression didn’t change, but inside she was laughing her head off.
As if she’d leave any traces behind.
The only witness might have been the village chief’s dog—but too bad, she’d already erased its memory.
While things were light and cheerful on Su Nianzhi’s side—
Over at the village chief’s house, gloom blanketed the entire household.
Lu Jiajia’s mother sat at the courtyard gate, cursing loudly and shamelessly.
Village chief Lu Shanyong smoked silently, while his sons, daughters-in-law, and grandchildren didn’t dare utter a word.
Who would believe that a whole family slept through the night and woke up to find all their money and vouchers gone?
It wasn’t like they were all dead!
Lu Jiajia sat in her room, her face dark.
“System, can you figure out who stole from my house?”
The system’s robotic voice responded: “To obtain clues, Host must complete a task.”
Lu Jiajia rolled her eyes but still asked sweetly, “What task do I need to complete?”
