Chapter 40: You Really Are Hungry

Fu Yanci paused, his eyes narrowing slightly.

It was as if he had just heard something funny—he suddenly let out a low laugh and spoke with a tone full of contempt, “Ruan Liuzheng, are you kidding me? Look around all of Yuncheng—besides me, who else would help a powerless, parentless girl like you?”

He turned and walked to the sofa, sitting down with a proud expression. “I’m not leaving tonight. I want to see who you could possibly call to help you!”

Who would dare to throw him out?

Fu Yanci looked up, his dark eyes filled with amusement and disdain.

In his mind, Ruan Liuzheng was all bark and no bite—tough on the outside, weak inside.

She wouldn’t escape his grasp tonight. Since that’s the case, he might as well play along.

Ruan Liuzheng looked at the confident and arrogant glint in his eyes. Her gaze lowered slightly, and she let out a sigh, seemingly helpless.

He really won’t give up until he hits rock bottom.

Did Fu Yanci really think the Fu family could control all of Yuncheng?

“Mom…”

Fu Jingcheng looked at Fu Yanci, who was arrogantly lounging on the sofa, and thought his mom had been scared into submission.

He tugged at her sleeve, his big round eyes full of worry. He whispered, “How about I go ask Great-grandpa for help? If he speaks up, he’ll definitely make him leave…”

Ruan Liuzheng looked down and gently caressed her son’s soft face. She shook her head and said softly, “It’s okay, Chengcheng. Don’t worry. Mommy has a way.”

With that, she picked up her phone and, right in front of Fu Yanci, made a call. Her cool gaze held a hint of provocation.

The phone was on speaker, and the mechanical female voice echoed clearly through the quiet living room.

Fu Yanci heard the familiar digits—numbers every citizen of Huaguo knew by heart—and his handsome face immediately darkened.

“Ruan Liuzheng! You actually dare—”

But Ruan Liuzheng simply made a “shush” gesture.

The reason?

The call had already connected.

“Hello, this is Yuncheng Police Headquarters. How can we help you?” came a soft, polite female voice.

Fu Yanci’s expression turned even gloomier.

No matter how powerful the Fu family was, they couldn’t reach into the police headquarters.

The current chief was a man even Old Master Fu feared and respected.

He was known for being impartial and fair, no matter the status or background of those involved.

If—

Fu Yanci didn’t dare think further. He immediately tried to grab the phone.

But how could Ruan Liuzheng let him succeed?

She called the police precisely because she knew this was the one area even Fu Yanci couldn’t touch.

She had already given him plenty of chances. He was the one who didn’t cherish them and pushed things to the point of no return.

With a cold curl of her lips, she spoke right before his hand could reach the phone.

“Hello, I’d like to report an intruder.”

“No. 9 Building, Yuelan Huafu… Someone has broken in illegally!”

She said the final few words slowly and clearly.

After confirming with the officer on the line, Ruan Liuzheng calmly hung up.

She looked at Fu Yanci’s increasingly icy expression with a faint smile, her lips lifting in a subtle curve.

“Fu Yanci, do you still think there’s nothing I can do to you?”

She let out a soft chuckle, her expression solemn.

“Never underestimate someone without power or status. The country has given us the strongest weapon—to protect our legal rights.”

A few minutes later, Fu Yanci sat on the sofa, clearly frustrated, his dark eyes filled with restlessness.

He glared at Ruan Liuzheng. “Do you really have to make such a scene? I’m your husband. Even if I go to the police station, they won’t do anything to me.”

“Ruan Liuzheng, this little trick of yours is pointless. You’d better cancel that report immediately!”

As the president of the Fu Corporation, he couldn’t afford any scandal involving the police.

If word got out, not only would the shareholders seize on it, but so would his rivals in the family.

Fu Yanci clenched his fists tighter, his dark eyes growing colder.

Ruan Liuzheng calmly met his gaze, her tone even. “So what? At least you’ll behave tonight. And don’t even think about me canceling the report.”

“Filing a false police report is a crime. I’m not that stupid.”

Fu Yanci took a deep breath, the veins on his forehead twitching.

“You know that, and yet you still called the cops? Don’t forget, legally I’m still your husband!”

Facing his fury, Ruan Liuzheng merely smiled and reminded him, “True. But Fu Yanci, don’t forget—we signed a prenuptial agreement.”

Fu Yanci fell silent.

His brows furrowed tightly, lips pressed in a line, anger churning in his chest but helpless to do anything.

Prenups were standard for wealthy families to avoid complications from gold diggers.

Of course, he and Ruan Liuzheng had signed one too.

He just hadn’t expected the very thing meant to guard against her would now backfire against him.

After a long silence, he clenched his jaw and walked over to the window.

He had to prepare before things spiraled completely out of control.

“Miss Ruan, what’s going on here?”

Arriving along with the sound of sirens was Qi Chong, holding a takeout box from Chao Shi Ji.

He stepped inside, confused.

Ruan Liuzheng lifted her eyes and said, “Perfect timing, Qi Chong. Can I trouble you to watch Chengcheng for a bit? I have something to handle.”

“Heh, no wonder I couldn’t find your lover. Turns out you sent him out for takeout.”

Fu Yanci appeared silently behind her, his dark eyes sweeping over Qi Chong with disdain.

“I thought you had better taste. Ruan Liuzheng, you must really be desperate. No standards at all!”

Ruan Liuzheng glanced at him, visibly displeased. “Fu Yanci, if you have time to insult me, maybe worry about yourself first!”

“You—!”

He clenched his jaw, glaring coldly at her, fists tightening.

Finally, he scoffed at Qi Chong and walked downstairs.

Ruan Liuzheng watched his back, her eyes frosty.

She handed her son to Qi Chong and gave him brief instructions before following Fu Yanci down.

Not long after they left, the sirens faded, just as abruptly as they’d come.

Yuelan Huafu returned to its usual quiet.

Only Qi Chong and a slightly annoyed Fu Jingcheng remained behind.

“Uncle, are you really going to just hold me like this? Shouldn’t you be calling Uncle Xie by now?”

Fu Jingcheng finally broke the silence.

He kicked his little legs and looked up at Qi Chong, his pouty little face deadly serious.

Qi Chong snapped back to reality and looked down at the kid, frowning. “Little guy, your mom just now—”

“Uncle, is this really the time to be questioning that? As an assistant, shouldn’t your first reaction be reporting to your boss when something goes wrong?”

Fu Jingcheng’s big dark eyes locked on Qi Chong, and he suddenly gave a bright smile.

But his tone held a hint of menace.

“Uncle, you’re really bad at your job~”

Qi Chong stared at the tiny kid and, for some reason, felt a chill down his spine.

He had no doubt that if he didn’t call Xie Qingcen soon, this kid would go running to snitch.

So…

He quickly set the boy down and called Xie Qingcen.

Though he wasn’t sure exactly what had happened, anything involving Miss Ruan was something his boss would definitely not ignore.

He had to report it.

Fu Jingcheng watched Qi Chong’s back, a cunning glint in his eyes and a smirk on his lips.

The moon was hazy tonight—perfect for Uncle Xie to play the hero.

If everything went right, Mommy might even be so touched that she’d fall for him…

Fu Jingcheng lowered his gaze, a sly look flashing across his little face.

An hour later, a sleek Rolls-Royce Phantom pulled up outside Yuncheng Police Headquarters.

The entire car was jet black, blending into the night.

In the back seat sat Xie Qingcen, long legs crossed.

He was handsome, his features refined like carved jade.

Even in a thin black shirt, he exuded an aura of cold regality.

He lifted his eyes, glancing at the brightly lit police station, his slender fingers tapping the armrest with impatience.

He opened his mouth, his voice clear and cool. “Why aren’t they out yet?”

“Mr. Xie, I already informed Young Master Yun. I’m sure Miss Ruan will be out soon. And from what I gathered, she was the one who called the police, so she definitely won’t be mistreated.”

Qi Chong dutifully reported.

Xie Qingcen shot him a cold glance.

He didn’t speak, but the air around him suddenly turned icy.

Qi Chong stiffened.

He swallowed nervously. “I’ll go check again—make sure Miss Ruan isn’t being wronged!”

Xie Qingcen continued to stare at him, silent.

After a long moment, he gave a light hum and finally looked away.

Qi Chong: …

So much for pretending not to care.

He pouted inwardly but still obediently opened the door and headed toward the police station.
