Chapter 14.2
Mu Ling estimated when the wolf cub would finish eating the canned food and finally stood up from the sofa. She walked to the medicine cabinet, knelt down, and peered underneath with her dark eyes.
The little wolf noticed the human’s presence and retreated in fear, shrinking into the farthest corner. It was about to howl threateningly at Mu Ling, but before it could, the human outside made the first move, howling, “Awoo, awoo!”
The little wolf was stunned into silence.
Confused, it looked at the human in a daze.
Mu Ling continued, “Awoo, awoo, awoooo!” She even dragged out the last sound.
The little wolf tilted its head in bewilderment, then tilted it again before trying tentatively, “Awo-?”
“Awoo!” Mu Ling interrupted, howling even louder, “Awooooooo!”
The little wolf couldn’t find a moment to interject, so it closed its mouth, its clear eyes warily fixed on the human.
Outside the door, Wei Li was on the verge of collapse. He said in utter distress, “Brother Xiang, it’s over. That’s the director’s voice. She’s gone mad! She’s only been here for two days, and I’ve already driven her insane.”
Xiang Bie remained silent.
Inside, Mu Ling and the little wolf howled back and forth for five minutes until her mouth went dry. She finally stopped, stood up, and went to get some water.
While drinking, she caught sight of the little wolf sneaking to the edge of the medicine cabinet, poking out half its head to peek at her.
Hmph, curious about your auntie now, aren’t you, little one?
After drinking, Mu Ling returned to the sofa and began playing on her light brain again.
She remained still, and the little wolf hesitated under the cabinet for a while before slowly crawling out further.
It moved with difficulty because of the injury on its arm.
Seeing it come out, Mu Ling put down her light brain and stretched out her hand. “Come here.”
The little wolf didn’t move.
Mu Ling changed her tone, “Awoo.”
The little wolf tilted its head again, then sat where it was, pondering for a moment before lifting its neck and responding, “Awoo.”
Mu Ling: “Awoo.”
The little wolf: “Awoo.”
In the dead of night, at one in the morning, a human and wolf were howling in duet.
Outside, Wei Li, worn out, occasionally heard the sounds from inside. “Brother Xiang, are we really not going in? I’m seriously worried about the director’s mental state.”
Xiang Bie, sitting on a bench, remarked, “She sounds pretty energetic to me.”
Wei Li ruffled his hair in frustration. “That’s what’s so terrifying! The more energetic she sounds, the scarier it is! Worse, her howling is becoming more and more accurate.”
Indeed, just from the howling alone, who could tell the difference between the director and a wild wolf now?
“Click.”
As Wei Li anxiously paced, the door to the veterinary station suddenly opened.
Wei Li quickly stood up, and Xiang Bie glanced over as well.
They saw Mu Ling emerge, holding a trembling little wolf in her left arm and a medical kit in her right hand. With an air of nonchalance, she said, “I’m taking the little wolf to the infirmary to change its bandages. You two clean up in here.”
As she spoke, she noticed the little wolf trying to burrow into her coat, clearly frightened by Wei Li and Xiang Bie.
Mu Ling coaxed softly, “There, there, Auntie’s here. Don’t be scared.”
Not wanting the little wolf to spend more time near Wei Li and Xiang Bie, she quickly left and entered the infirmary room farthest from Qilin.
Considering the natural suppression between species, she dared not let the little wolf stay too close to Qilin.
The infirmary was empty. Mu Ling sat on the floor and opened the medical kit.
The little wolf refused to get down, terrified of the unfamiliar environment. It stayed in Mu Ling’s arms the whole time, its eyes nervously darting around.
“Let Auntie check your wound.” Mu Ling unwrapped the bandage and cleaned the blood with a disinfecting wipe. She found that some of the stitches had indeed come undone. With a sigh, she took out the needle and thread again.
When Wei Li cautiously entered after cleaning up, he saw that the director had finished re-stitching the little wolf’s wound. She was now leaning against the wall, with the cat-sized wolf cub resting on her arm, its head nodding as it drifted off to sleep.
Wei Li quietly retreated and mouthed something to Xiang Bie.
Xiang Bie said nothing, simply tying up the trash bag and carrying it outside.
After a while, Xiang Bie returned with a blanket and handed it to Wei Li. “Give this to her.”
As Wei Li passed by Qilin’s cage with the blanket, he could sense the creature’s hostility towards him. Not daring to linger, he quickly delivered the blanket and hurried out.
The little wolf was almost asleep when Mu Ling stood up, cradling it as she fetched the blanket. After spreading it out, she gently placed the wolf on it.
The little wolf immediately woke up. It stood on the blanket, staggered a couple of steps back to Mu Ling’s side, and sat down, leaning against her body.
Mu Ling lay down, hugging the little wolf and gently patting its back. “There, there. Auntie won’t leave. Auntie will stay with you. With Auntie here, there’s nothing to fear. Auntie’s the director, you know. Auntie’s in charge here.”
After all the commotion in the middle of the night, Mu Ling was indeed exhausted.
Outside, Xiang Bie stayed, in case Mu Ling needed anything. He told Wei Li to go rest since they still had work the next day.
While the three employees of Bi Ke Zoo were still busy fussing over the little wolf, on the starnet, the video of changing the bandages and trimming the nails of the retired Ripper tiger had already reached over 100 million views. Comments had exceeded 100,000, and at 10 pm, it had shot up to the top of the starnet’s hot search list and hadn’t dropped since.
As the popularity increased, the video caught the attention of major news platforms and official organizations.
Countless news accounts and official profiles were tagging, commenting, and sending private messages, but the “Bi Ke Zoo” account had yet to respond to the vast number of netizens.
What’s going on? Has she fallen asleep?
How can she sleep after putting me through this? How can she sleep at all?
Thus, under the hot topic «Live Scene of Retired Ripper Tiger Getting Its Nails Trimmed» a second hot trending topic about Bi Ke Zoo quickly appeared.
The new topic was: «Woman, are you asleep? I can’t sleep. When I close my eyes, all I can think about is you.»
