Chapter 60.2
This is Feifan..
Mu Ling could immediately confirm that this baboon was Feifan.
Taking a deep breath, she asked the driver, “Excuse me, is Sangnan First Road far from here?”
The driver paused, then replied, “Not far, just ahead. If you cut through the pedestrian street, it’s about a ten-minute walk.”
Mu Ling pulled up the navigation on her light brain, yanked open the car door, and bolted out.
The driver hurriedly called after her, “Director Mu! Director Mu!”
But her figure had already vanished into the bustling traffic.
“Wowa! Wowa! Wowa!”
At the same time, the Purple Lightning Baboon, brownish-yellow all over except for its distinctive purple rear, was hiding inside a truck. At its feet lay the driver’s mangled body, reduced to a bloody mess.
The baboon scratched its head anxiously. Limping slightly, it jumped from the driver’s seat to the passenger seat, then back again, before sticking its head out to call frantically: “Wowa! Wowa! Wowa!”
Its cries were rapid, frantic, and filled with tension.
It was completely surrounded. Humans encircled it on all sides, their guns trained on its position.
The Purple Lightning Baboon recognized guns; it knew exactly how dangerous they were. It had been trained in hiding and taking cover under gunfire. Though its current position was temporarily safe, it couldn’t stay there forever – its leg was injured.
Grabbing random objects with its dark claws, it squeezed them anxiously before tossing them aside. Then it paced back and forth unsteadily, baring its teeth while surveying the terrain.
Soon, it spotted a potential escape route. But the Purple Lightning Baboon was cautious – instead of making an immediate break for it, it began throwing items out of the truck: cigarettes, lighter, pens, notebooks – even ripping out the steering wheel. The police officers surrounding the truck grew increasingly irritated.
“Still no orders from above about whether we can act?”
“Wait – they’re still verifying. This baboon looks like the Purple Lightning Baboon that Changshan Zoo lost last month. If it really is a war beast, shooting it in the street would be suicide.”
“If it really is a war beast that just killed a civilian in broad daylight, it won’t be living much longer either.”
The police continued communicating through their radios. Just then, as even the driver’s body was thrown out, another officer asked, “What is it trying to do?”
“Wait – where did it go? It moved to the back compartment. Officers on the side, do you have visual?”
“Confirmed visual. Target is still in sight.”
“Keep it in view! Don’t let it—”
“AHHH!”
A scream erupted through the radio. The officers whirled around to see the baboon launching itself from the side window, making an incredible leap directly onto their colleague.
Its attack was blindingly fast. As it landed, its sharp claws immediately went for the officer’s chest.
The officer’s bulletproof vest saved him from being gutted, but the baboon’s claws shredded his uniform. It then viciously swiped at his head, knocking off his helmet before twisting around to his back. Its claws raked his arm, breaking the bone despite his protective gear.
As the officer’s gun clattered to the ground, the baboon snatched it up with surprising dexterity. Still clinging to the officer’s back, it awkwardly gripped the weapon with both hands, pressing the barrel against the back of his head.
“Shit!” the officer shouted. “It’s got a gun on me!”
The other officers erupted into chaos over their radios.
“What are we waiting for? Take it down!”
“Hold your fire – it can use a gun! What if it really is a war beast?”
“If we don’t act now, Old Li is done for!”
“This beast has gone rogue – it’s already killed someone! We can’t wait anymore. Aim for the limbs, just avoid the head!”
“Captain, we need your order!”
The captain, drenched in sweat, finally gritted his teeth and began, “Take—”
Before he could finish the word “action,” a woman’s cry pierced the air: “Feifan!”
The captain spun around to see a woman clutching a backpack standing at the police line, being held back by security personnel.
“Who is that?” The captain squinted through the distance. “Does she know this baboon? Let her through!”
After his order, the security personnel stepped aside. Mu Ling immediately rushed in while outside the police cordon, livestreamers captured the scene:
「Look, someone got in! Someone got in!」
「Wait – doesn’t she look familiar? Shit, is that Director Mu? I think that’s Director Mu!」
The livestream comments exploded:「 That’s our wifey! I’d recognize that silhouette anywhere – she shows it in her videos!」
「Damn, it’s dangerous in there! Stay safe, wifey!」
Mu Ling had run until she was drenched in sweat. As she approached the encirclement, an armed officer moved to stop her but froze upon recognizing her face. “Aren’t you—”
His eyes caught the partially unzipped backpack, where a beautiful white fox poked its head out.
“It really is you!” The officer pointed toward the scene. “You even know our Four Bay Star’s war beasts? Can you make it stop?”
Mu Ling swallowed hard and nodded firmly. “I’ll try, I’ll try. But please don’t shoot.”
Looking at all the guns around, Mu Ling’s own tension was visible.
The officer spoke gravely, “If it doesn’t harm our colleague, we won’t shoot. What’s your plan? Are you going in? Did you bring protective gear?”
Mu Ling shook her head.
The officer immediately radioed out: “Send in a bulletproof vest and helmet, now!”
Then to Mu Ling: “Wait here.”
But Mu Ling couldn’t wait. The baboon was already looking her way, growing more agitated with each approaching human. Its teeth were fully bared in a threatening display.
“Feifan, it’s you, isn’t it? Are you hurt? Why is there so much blood on you? Please calm down and put the gun down.”
The captain was stunned – was this really how the famous Director Mu communicated with war beasts?
Could it actually understand commands like “calm down” and “put down”?
The protective gear wouldn’t arrive for several minutes, but Mu Ling kept inching forward.
The captain moved to stop her, but Mu Ling assured him, “It’s okay, I won’t get too close. Lingren will protect me.”
The captain glanced at the white fox in her arms, which was intensely focused on the baboon and showing its own teeth, before finally lowering his hand.
Mu Ling took two more careful steps forward and tried again: “Feifan, put down the gun. Put it down. Put it down.”
The Purple Lightning Baboon understood “put down,” but it wouldn’t comply. Its expression remained fierce as it repeatedly glanced behind itself at a patch of greenery. If it could just reach those bushes and run along the tree line, the humans would never catch up.
Its back leg hurt, but that didn’t matter – it still had its front paws, which could carry it swiftly to freedom.
“Feifan, put down the gun. Get off the police officer.”
Mu Ling gave the command again, but she could see that unlike other war beasts who would at least hesitate at commands, Feifan was perhaps too intelligent – it didn’t even pause before ignoring her.
It had developed its own logic, knowing what best served its survival. Its resistance had completely overcome its war beast instincts. It was the least war beast-like specimen Mu Ling had ever encountered – its very genes seemed to have rejected the concept of “obedience.”
Well, there was only one option left. She’d thought it would be embarrassing and had hoped to avoid it, but there seemed to be no choice. She couldn’t let Feifan continue acting on its own like this. She needed some way to control it temporarily, even if just to make it hesitate for a moment.
Mu Ling took a deep breath, then spoke again.
“Wo”
“Wo wo wo wo”
The captain stared.
The other officers froze.
The onlookers beyond the cordon stood speechless.
Someone looked around confused: “Did… did I just hear monkey calls?”
Meanwhile, the purple-buttocked baboon, which had been eyeing its escape route, suddenly snapped its head around. Its elongated face tilted in confusion as it stared at Mu Ling, its gaze darting back and forth.
“Wo wo”
Mu Ling continued making the calls she had heard Lieyan use to summon Feifan just hours before – the sound still fresh in her memory.
The baboon grew more confused. It looked at Mu Ling, then searched its surroundings, finding nothing. After a moment’s hesitation, it raised its head skyward and called back: “Wowa wowa”
Mu Ling’s eyes lit up, and she pressed her advantage: “Wo wo wo wo”
“Wowa wowa”
Everyone else stood dumbfounded.
The police were short-circuiting – what was she doing?
Even the officer being held hostage suddenly experienced an existential moment of “Who am I? Where am I? What am I doing?”
Meanwhile, at Changshan Zoo’s shuttle bus, a staff member scratched his head in confusion and showed his screen to a colleague: “Am I seeing things? Can you verify if this woman making monkey calls in the livestream is Director Mu?”
His colleague looked and became equally confused: “Huh? Wasn’t Director Mu supposed to be at Monty Zoo helping with their war beasts? Why is she in the street making monkey calls?”
The police finally connected with Director Tian, who was in a meeting with his light-brain muted. Someone had to notify him before he learned of the situation. As soon as he saw Feifan’s video, he immediately declared, “That’s definitely Feifan. I’m bringing his keeper right now – please don’t harm it.”
The officer’s tone turned peculiar: “Isn’t that Director Mu from Bi Ke Zoo there on your behalf?”
“Director Mu went there?” Director Tian clearly had no idea.
The officer opened his mouth to say more.
Director Tian’s assistant suddenly blurted out: “Oh my god, Director! Director Mu is trending – she’s making monkey calls while searching for Feifan!”
Director Tian was speechless.
Meanwhile on Shenwang Star, in Bi Ke Zoo’s service area…
At three-thirty, Wei Li, who had just dropped off tourists at the animal dormitory, was walking toward the cafeteria while checking videos on his light-brain and drinking water.
As soon as he opened the StarNet, a recommended livestream popped up on his homepage. Wei Li clicked it casually.
Two seconds later-
“Pfft!” The water sprayed everywhere, drenching Xiang Bie who was walking out of the cafeteria.
Passing by Xiang Bie, “…”
Wei Li wiped his mouth, staring at his light-brain screen in shock. He exclaimed to Brother Xiang in alarm: “Brother Xiang, we’re in deep trouble! We weren’t watching closely enough, and the Director ran off to another planet to imitate animals! This time she’s doing monkey calls – now the whole Federation knows about her animal imitation habit. And damn, she’s really good at it!”
Xiang Bie, “…”
