Chapter 94.1
Mu Ling didn’t enter the main command center—after all, she wasn’t military personnel. The main control area was a classified zone where unauthorized individuals couldn’t freely enter and exit.
Instead, Mu Ling entered another room on the same floor. This room had monitors covering the walls, but currently only ten of them were active.
They were displaying Qilin and the others.
The monitoring room was also furnished with sofas and coffee tables with fruits and snacks laid out, clearly arranged for receiving guests.
Seeing this treatment, Mu Ling felt embarrassed and thanked the Major General. “You’ve specially arranged such a room for us, it’s too much trouble for you.”
The Major General smiled warmly. “Actually, it’s not just for you. From today until tomorrow, quite a few retired war beasts will be urgently recalled, and their owners will also come here.”
Mu Ling understood that he was referring to normally retired war beasts whose bodies were still in good condition and could help with reconnaissance.
The Major General sighed, “We owe a great debt of gratitude this time, they’re all here to help.”
Mu Ling said, “It’s all for Nurhar Star.”
The Major General paused, then smiled. “Yes, it’s all for Nurhar Star. Thank you, thank you.”
After giving a few more instructions, the Major General left. When the door closed, Mu Ling noticed two soldiers still standing guard outside.
Looking around the room again, Mu Ling discovered there were also surveillance cameras inside.
Bringing her gaze back, she said to Xiang Bie, “Let’s sit.”
After sitting down, they focused on the ten monitors. The first one Mu Ling saw showed Tayun and his owner.
Mu Ling had originally thought that the monitoring meant she could see through Tayun’s perspective, viewing what he saw, but it turned out there was not only the war beast’s viewpoint but also that of their military owner partner.
This meant they could switch between both perspectives, observing the war beast’s every movement more comprehensively.
Mu Ling thought this was quite thoughtful. She was now watching Tayun through Colonel Yin’s perspective.
Watching Tayun…
Watching Tayun…
Watching Tayun…
Mu Ling: “…”
Wait, why was Colonel Yin constantly staring at Tayun? How much did he miss Tayun? Did his gaze never shift? Wasn’t he afraid of tripping while walking?
Mu Ling immediately reflected, “Perhaps I should have kept in touch with Colonel Yin more often, updating him about Tayun’s situation. Xiang…”
Mu Ling paused after saying just one word, then quickly corrected herself: “He could visit the zoo during his leave to see Tayun.”
Xiang Bie watched Mu Ling’s hurried recovery with a slight smile. “I’ve contacted him before. He’s been on the frontlines continuously. Forget about vacations, he hasn’t even had a chance to watch your videos.”
Mu Ling didn’t know this. Mainly because once animals were rehomed at their zoo, they wouldn’t randomly disturb the animals’ owners without reason.
Mu Ling said, “Then we must take this opportunity to tell Colonel Yin to visit the zoo more often when he finishes his work!”
Xiang Bie responded with an “Mm.”
As they were chatting, they saw Qilin suddenly move quickly on one of the monitors.
Qilin’s team was currently reconnoitering a university. His temporary partner was a spirited female soldier in her thirties with neat short hair, holding a rifle. When Qilin ran toward the teaching building, this female soldier’s speed was surprisingly close to Qilin’s, and she effortlessly outpaced other regular soldiers.
Mu Ling was shocked. “She’s so fast!”
Xiang Bie took a fruit knife from the table and started peeling an apple while explaining, “In beast tamer training, speed and endurance are the most important aspects. They must ensure humans don’t get separated from the war beasts, so if these two criteria aren’t met, no matter how well they perform in other subjects, they can’t graduate.”
Mu Ling suddenly understood. “Then becoming a beast tamer is quite difficult—humans actually have to match an animal’s speed. The training intensity must be incredible…”
“They don’t need to match it completely.”
Xiang Bie said, “Look, Qilin has also slowed down. She’s accommodating her partner. War beasts in working environments are also trained not to separate from their owners; that’s part of their training too.”
Mu Ling nodded in understanding. As she watched the monitors, she seemed to gain a better understanding of why the bond between war beasts and their owners was so profound.
Theirs wasn’t an ordinary caretaking relationship, not a relationship where one side kept the other.
They grew together, trained together, shared hardships together, and fought battles together as comrades.
Unlike humans, beasts never betray their owners. Who wouldn’t cherish a friend who trusts you unconditionally, a partner who guards your back?
Moreover, because this relationship began from the moment they entered military school and lasted so long, owners found it extremely difficult to accept when their war beasts retired due to illness. Especially when the war beasts suffered mental damage and no longer recognized their owners—that kind of pain was indescribable…
Owners had to watch helplessly as their beasts’ conditions deteriorated—self-harming, refusing food, self-abuse, and eventually dying. Throughout this process, they could do nothing to help.
Thinking about all this, Mu Ling became even more determined about her war beast daycare idea. She needed more case studies to supplement her knowledge in caring for neurologically damaged war beasts.
Only with more cases could she share more content, and by spreading this information, more war beasts could be saved.
While thinking about these matters, suddenly a peeled apple appeared before her eyes.
Mu Ling was startled. She looked at the apple, then at Brother Xiang beside her.
Xiang Bie said, “You haven’t had breakfast yet. Eat this first; we don’t know when breakfast will be delivered.”
Mu Ling smiled, took the apple, and took a bite, then said, “You should have one too.”
Xiang Bie picked up another apple from the fruit plate but didn’t peel it, instead biting directly into it.
He didn’t care about such things.
Mu Ling glanced at him again, then returned her attention to the monitors.
By now, Qilin had finally reached her destination—a biology laboratory on the fifth floor of the teaching building. The moment she charged into the lab, there were mutated white mice squeaking chaotically all over the floor.
“Qilin! Back up!” the female soldier who had caught up commanded sharply, pulling out her handgun and firing a series of shots inside.
Some of the mice inside were no longer white but had turned green or blue. Being small and scurrying everywhere, the female soldier missed several times.
At this moment, the other soldiers behind also caught up. They likewise drew their guns and fired into the lab.
Finally, after two minutes, all ten mutant mice were dead.
Then they went in to check, and after confirming all ten were completely dead, they turned to look at the golden tiger waiting outside the door.
Qilin sniffed the air with her nose.
Then she turned and walked away unhurriedly.
Seeing the war beast’s attitude, which indicated no mutant beasts remained nearby, the soldiers followed Qilin downstairs.
When the gunshots had first rung out, Mu Ling’s expression had become extremely grave. Only when the brief battle ended did she finally relax, patting her chest as she said, “They indeed didn’t let Qilin directly engage the mutant beasts.”
Xiang Bie swallowed the apple in his mouth and suddenly said calmly, “It’s also possible that Qilin simply didn’t consider these lightly infected mutant mice worth her personal effort.”
Mu Ling: “…”
Was her perspective too limited?
Knock, knock, knock…
Just then, there was knocking at the door.
Mu Ling thought breakfast had arrived and quickly said, “Come in.”
When the door opened, it wasn’t someone delivering breakfast but a Lieutenant Colonel. Behind him stood an old gentleman in an impeccable suit with a full head of white hair.
Mu Ling quickly stood up.
Xiang Bie also stood.
The Lieutenant Colonel came in and said with a smile, “Director Mu, this is Mr. Kenny. Mr. Kenny is the current owner of the retired war beast ‘Piano.'”
Mu Ling hurriedly nodded to the old gentleman, “Hello.”
Old Mr. Kenny smiled, holding an elegant cane in one hand while removing his hat with the other. He placed the hat against his chest and slightly bowed to Mu Ling: “Hello.”
So formal!
After Mr. Kenny entered, the Lieutenant Colonel used his light brain to control the monitor wall, and immediately a new window appeared in the bottom right corner.
Mu Ling saw a black and white zebra in that window… no wonder it was called Piano.
The Lieutenant Colonel soon left. With a stranger suddenly in the room, Mu Ling became more reserved, until the old gentleman spoke first: “Director Mu, I’ve watched your videos.”
Mu Ling quickly responded, “I’m honored, truly honored.”
The old gentleman maintained a gentlemanly smile but said nothing more, pointing at the monitor wall to indicate they should watch.
So Mu Ling looked back at the monitors and saw that something was happening with Moonlight as well.
Moonlight’s reconnaissance area was a pedestrian street lined with stores, complex and intricate.
The snow-white silver bear was running on all fours, and soon it charged to the entrance of a restaurant. With one swipe of its paw, it shattered the restaurant’s glass door, easily jumped inside, and headed straight for the kitchen on the second floor.
Moonlight’s temporary partner was a male soldier who, gripping his gun, hurriedly followed Moonlight. But when he reached the kitchen door, he froze.
The kitchen was a mess, with three or four dead sheep lying on the floor.
These sheep had been eaten until only their heads and skeletons remained. The floor was covered in blood, and the strong smell of blood mixed with putrid odors, creating a stench so terrible it made one want to vomit!
The male soldier frowned deeply. Enduring the stench, he aimed his gun around but found no trace of mutant beasts.
He couldn’t help but look toward Moonlight.
Moonlight was also sniffing around, and as he sniffed, he ran toward the dining area on the other side.
The soldier quickly followed. When they reached the dining area, there was a sudden “cluck” sound, and a chicken the size of a pig suddenly flapped its wings, flew low, and charged straight at the white bear’s face!
