Chapter 31 : No one’s money comes from the wind
“Ten taels? It’s a bit too much, but it’s not impossible.” Jiang Sui pretended to be reluctant.
“Oh, not much, not much. I heard that you sold a total of 25 taels of silver. Ten taels of silver is nothing, don’t you think, Hechuan’s wife? Auntie can see from the first sight that you are a very good person beautiful and kind-hearted. You are such a kind person, you will be blessed in the future.”
Liu’s mother was smiling so happily, especially the corners of her eyes, where the wrinkles puffed up, making them look like they were about to explode.
Look, she really knows everything, even how much the house was sold for.
She was so pleased now, feeling that it was effortless, and that it was really easy to fool such an innocent little girl.
Mother Xiao was extremely anxious. She covered her forehead with her hands, not knowing what to say. She truly thought Jiang Sui had agreed and felt that this child was really confused.
Father Xiao was also very anxious but didn’t know what to say. Originally, they were the ones who had said that the fourth daughter-in-law had the final say, but now someone was taking advantage of her. Young people still lacked experience.
Liu stopped crying and instead put on a smiling face, completely forgetting that she had just been slapped by her own husband.
Only Jiang Sui, looking at their smug looks, curled the corner of her mouth into a sneer.
You have to pour a basin of cold water on them when they are full of joy.
“Aunt, I can lend you this money, but I have to make it clear first,” Jiang Sui said out of the blue.
The Liu family’s mother and two children hadn’t realized anything was wrong and were still looking at her with smiles.
“What are you talking about? You talk, and we’ll listen,” Liu’s mother thought. It’s just a few words. It won’t hurt to listen, as long as I get the money.
Jiang Sui smiled, pulled the braided hair behind her head to her chest, and fiddled with the ends of her hair
“When it comes to borrowing money, you must pay it back. I’m sure everyone knows that. But if you want to borrow money from me, it’s a bit troublesome.”
“It’s just a loan, how much trouble can it be? If you’re worried we won’t pay you back, I’ll write you a promissory note.”
Liu didn’t think much of it. As long as the IOU didn’t specify when to pay it back, it was still up to her family to decide.
She is really unique. She’s a married woman, but she still openly speaks for her family.
“Of course, I’ll write a promissory note, but the trouble I’m talking about is that these ten taels of silver are not a small amount. I want to ask that the repayment period be clearly stated on the promissory note. I think one year should be enough. As long as you write on the promissory note that you will return the ten taels of silver as scheduled after one year, that will be enough.”
“In addition, I will take this IOU to the town and find the headman to notarize it and stamp it to make it effective. If you don’t return it on time after one year, I can file an appeal with the headman and ask him to claim the debt on my behalf. To sum up, if you have no objection, then do as I say. After the IOU is stamped, I will lend you the money. How about that?”
(In ancient times, the town official who handled civil disputes was called a Tingzhang, who was under the jurisdiction of the county magistrate and had no rank, but received a salary.)
They never expected that Jiang Sui was waiting here. Now it was the Xiao family’s turn to feel happy.
On the other hand, the Liu family’s mother and her two children’s faces turned as dark as the bottom of a pot in an instant after hearing Jiang Sui’s series of requests.
“Fourth brother’s wife, you don’t have to be so mean. We are all family, why do we have to be so distant? We will return the money, is there any need to make a fuss to the captain?” Liu rolled her eyes. She didn’t expect that the fourth brother’s wife, who looked soft and harmless, would actually have such deep thoughts.
“That’s right. Aren’t you afraid of being laughed at by outsiders? It’s not a big deal that you have to go to the head of the pavilion. If you don’t want to borrow it, just say so!” Liu’s mother changed her flattering look and put on a sour face.
But Jiang Sui is not afraid.
“That’s not right. What do you mean by a small matter? Ten taels of silver is not a small matter for us country folk. If it’s more than five taels, we can go to the head of the pavilion to get his seal. Besides, as the old saying goes, brothers have to settle accounts clearly. The eldest brother of the Liu family and Hechuan are not brothers, so they have to settle accounts clearly.”
“Anyway, I am willing to lend the money. I just put forward my request reasonably. If you disagree, I won’t lose anything. After all, no one’s money comes from the wind, right?” Jiang Sui still smiled appropriately, but this smile became a blatant provocation in Liu’s eyes.
She looked at Jiang Sui, her teeth itching with anger
“I really didn’t realize, Fourth Brother’s wife, that you are the one with the highest level of Taoism. You can talk so much. I really underestimated you.”
That’s right, the devil is always one step ahead of you, there are many things you don’t know, Jiang Sui retorted in her heart.
She did not refute, but just smiled. The calmer she was, the angrier the Liu family mother and son became.
Liu punched the cotton and looked at her man with gritted teeth
“Xiao Yi, are you dumb? You watched your wife being bullied, but you didn’t show any reaction at all?”
Xiao Yi pressed his tongue against his mouth, his face burning with pain from being punched, but today he finally understood that his wife was not on the same page with him at all, and her whole heart was with her parents’ home.
“What do you want me to say? It’s my fault today. I’m sorry that you shouldn’t have hit me. You can beat me and scold me all you want to vent your anger, but I still say the same thing. You can say it’s okay for me, but my parents and brothers can’t. They didn’t do anything wrong, and my family didn’t treat you badly.”
“You want to borrow money from my fourth brother’s wife, but can’t they ask for it? And they won’t charge you the interest, so there’s nothing you can do even if you don’t want to.”
This really pissed Liu off. She was totally at a loss as they couldn’t agree to Jiang Sui’s request after all.
It has to be paid back in one year. Who can pay back ten taels of silver in one year?
But if you just want to become a deadbeat, people will use the head of the village and the law to put pressure on you.
Finally, she sat down on the ground and started to throw a tantrum
“Oh, why is my life so miserable? I’m pregnant, my in-laws bully me, and my husband doesn’t care about me. I’d rather die.”
She cried with tears and snot. Seeing this, Liu’s mother also fell to the ground, hugged her daughter, and cried. The two began to sing a duet:
“My poor daughter, I am incapable of protecting you, and I don’t have the face to do so. Your in-laws look down on you, but it’s okay. They don’t care about you, but I do. Pack up your things and go home to live with me.”
As she spoke, she began to pull her daughter up, and the mother and daughter wiped their tears and supported each other back to the room to pack their things.
When passing by her son Liu Jiang, Liu’s mother winked at him, and Liu Jiang immediately understood.
Seeing that Liu was making a fuss about going back to her parents’ home, Mother Xiao became anxious.
No matter how much Liu helped her parents’ family to make trouble, she was still pregnant, and it was not right for her to go back like this, so she tugged at Xiao Yi’s sleeve, signaling him to keep her.
