Chapter 6: Sleeping Together
Lu Beixun closed his eyes, as if trying to endure something. He pulled me away from the door, opened it, and tried to throw me out.
I’d already planned my countermove. As he opened the door, I plopped down on the floor, wrapping my arms around his long legs. I looked up at him with puppy-dog eyes, “Brother, don’t kick me out.”
My voice was soft, a mix of whining and stubbornness. Lu Beixun’s brow furrowed, and a hint of helplessness flickered in his deep eyes. “Get up.”
“Nope!” If I kept playing coy, I’d lose my husband. “Sleep together.”
“Cen… Wan.” He looked down at me, his voice low and commanding, barely containing his anger.
I held onto his leg, meeting his gaze. “Call me Wanwan. That’s what you used to call me.”
I’m a master of shameless tactics. Even I was impressed with myself. Rebirth had unlocked a new level of audacity, and it was pretty awesome.
Lu Beixun was at his wit’s end. He couldn’t leave, but he couldn’t stay either. With anyone else, he wouldn’t have been this patient. “What do you want?”
I blinked innocently. “Didn’t I say? Sleep together.”
“Let go first.”
“You’ll sleep with me if I let go?” I’m not a kid. I’m not falling for that. What if I let go, and he runs?
His jaw tightened. After a moment, he said, “Yes.”
“Liars are puppies. I’m letting go.” I released his leg, grabbed his shirt to help me stand, and gave him a sheepish smile. I closed the bedroom door and locked it. “Time for bed.”
As I was getting ready for a shower, I realized there were no pajamas for me in his closet. If I went back to my room to get some, he might lock the door before I could get back.
Easier to get out than to get back in. I opened his closet and grabbed one of his shirts. It fit him perfectly, but on me, it was huge and baggy.
After my shower, I was drying my still-damp hair with a towel. My legs were long and slender, my skin smooth and pale. The shirt made me look both innocent and alluring.
Lu Beixun, who was sitting on the bed flipping through a magazine, glanced at me for a second before shifting his gaze back to the magazine.
I stood in front of the full-length mirror, drying my hair. “This shirt is a bit big.”
It didn’t even show off my figure. I’d been secretly watching him since I came out of the bathroom. He’d only glanced at me once when I first came out, and then ignored me.
I thought I had a pretty good figure. Curvy in all the right places. Why wouldn’t he take a second look?
I tossed the towel aside and sat on the bed. Finally, Lu Beixun glanced at me, a hint of annoyance in his eyes. “Dry your hair before getting into bed.”
“You’re the boss, you decide.” I hadn’t even touched the bed yet, but I went back to the bathroom. When I came out with my hair dry, there was an extra blanket on the bed. I walked over and picked it up. “Is this for me?”
He gave a quiet Mm.”
I almost choked. I’m not a wolf, you know. Why is he… so wary of me?
“What do you think I’m going to do?”
“I don’t know.” He said that and then grabbed his clothes, turning to go into the bathroom.
Cen Wan: “…”
I angrily folded the extra blanket Lu Beixun had brought and put it in the closet. I lay down on the right side of the bed and pulled the covers up.
Sleeping in his room, I felt enveloped in a sense of security. I relaxed and drifted off. When Lu Beixun came out of the bathroom, I was already asleep, breathing softly.
He stood by the bed, his gaze soft as he looked at the sleeping girl. He wasn’t as cold and distant as he had been during the day.
“Why am I suddenly being nice to you?”
The question was directed at the sleeping girl, but it also seemed to be a question for himself.
Lu Beixun turned off the room lights, leaving only a warm floor lamp. He sat by the bed, quietly watching her. I don’t know how long he sat there before he got up, turned off the floor lamp, and left the bedroom for his study.
The person on the bed started having nightmares as soon as Lu Beixun left, as if her subconscious knew that the person who gave her a sense of security was gone. At two in the morning, she woke up from the nightmare.
She turned on the floor lamp. In the warm light, she could see the fine beads of sweat on her forehead. She looked to the left side of the bed, but there was no one there.
She muttered a curse.
Lu Beixun, you big liar.
She didn’t know if he had left the room or the house. Her heart suddenly felt empty.
She suddenly regretted it. If she hadn’t insisted on sleeping with Lu Beixun, maybe he wouldn’t have left.
She threw back the covers, got out of bed, and left the bedroom. She went downstairs, but the living room was empty. He must have already left.
It was late at night, and she couldn’t sleep. She went down to the garden behind the villa. It was quiet, with a faint scent of flowers. She sat in the gazebo, enjoying the night breeze. It was a little chilly at night in early September, but I liked this atmosphere.
It calmed my heart.
What should I do with Lu Beixun? He doesn’t seem to like being around me.
After sitting for a while, she looked up at the night sky, but she noticed that the light in the study on the second floor was on.
Lu Beixun…
She got up and ran all the way to the second floor. She lost one of her slippers on the way up, but she didn’t look back. She ran barefoot to the study door, held her breath, and turned the knob.
Hearing the noise, the person behind the desk looked over, his expression obscure. Lu Beixun noticed her feet and his brow furrowed slightly.
Cen Wan suddenly smiled. The disappointment in her heart instantly vanished. “I thought you left.”
She glared at him playfully. “Lu Beixun, you’re a big liar.”
“I had some work to finish,” Lu Beixun said calmly. “Where’s your shoe?”
Cen Wan looked down at her feet, she smiled sheepishly. “It fell off.”
“Where is it?”
“On the stairs.”
Lu Beixun got up and left the study. When he came back, he had a slipper in his hand. He placed it at her feet, grabbed her ankle, and put the slipper on her foot.
Cen Wan looked at him, her heart felt warm.
Lu Beixun straightened up and looked at her. “Not going to sleep?”
“I had a nightmare.” Cen Wan asked, “Are you still working?”
“I still have a little bit to finish.”
Cen Wan pointed to the sofa in the study. “Can I sit here and keep you company? I promise I won’t bother you.”
It was a little chilly in the garden, and I was wearing thin clothes. I couldn’t help but sneeze.
Lu Beixun pondered for a moment. “Go back to sleep.”
“Okay.” I felt like I was being rejected. I didn’t say anything more, I turned and left. Lu Beixun closed the study door and followed me.
Hearing the noise, I stopped and turned to look at him. “You’re not working anymore?”
“Mmm.”
My eyes lit up. “You’re going to sleep with me?”
Lu Beixun didn’t admit or deny it. He followed me back to the room, closed the bedroom door, and said, “Sleep.”
My heart felt warm. I got back into bed and patted the space next to me. “You sleep too.”
Lu Beixun said, “I’m not tired.”
“I’m not tired either.” I was afraid he would leave again.
“I’m not going anywhere.” Lu Beixun sat on the edge of the bed and looked at me. “Sleep.”
I just wanted him to stay with me. I knew he couldn’t possibly be not tired after working all night. I was causing him trouble. I got up, threw back the covers, and got out of bed. “You go to sleep. I’ll go back to my room.”
I smiled at him and turned to leave, but Lu Beixun grabbed my wrist. “Sleep.”
I was stunned. Lu Beixun turned off the light, got into bed, and lay down on the left side.
I didn’t react for a long time. When I finally came to my senses, I smiled and lay down next to him, my heart filled with joy.
