These days, finding a summer job is really not easy.
Working in a factory? Too exhausting, and the effort doesn’t match the pay.
Being a waiter or waitress? You have to put up with other people’s moods, and the wages aren’t high either.
If food delivery were popular, I could try delivering orders, but at this time, food delivery hadn’t taken off yet—only in the university district and business areas could you often see delivery workers.
“Xu Ye, what kind of summer job are you actually looking for?”
“Something with light work, freedom, and good pay.”
Qin Zhiwei sneered, “If you want to be a gigolo, just say so.”
“Get lost~”
The two of them wandered around downtown all afternoon but couldn’t find a suitable job. Qin Zhiwei was too tired to keep going. He waved his hand and squatted on the curb. “If you want one, you find it yourself. I’m not planning to work this summer anyway. My Father and Mother said that if I get into a top university, they’ll give me a ten-thousand-yuan reward.”
“You won’t make it.”
“That’s not necessarily true. The exam was so difficult this year, the cutoff score might be pretty low.”
Xu Ye smiled. “Last night I dreamed you barely passed the second-tier university cutoff.”
“Nonsense.”
“Not only did I dream about your exam score, but I also saw you getting married not long after graduating. Then, the next year, your wife cheated on you.”
“Xu Ye, damn you. Are you cursing me?”
Xu Ye said nothing. His eyes landed on a sign by the street that read ‘Yu Jian Music Tavern.’ He patted Qin Zhiwei and pointed toward the tavern. “Come on, let’s check that place out.”
“No way. I’ll just wait here for you.”
“Suit yourself.”
Without hesitation, Xu Ye strode toward Yu Jian Music Tavern.
The tavern hadn’t opened yet in the afternoon. Inside, only a female server was cleaning. Xu Ye glanced inside from the door and then stepped in.
“Hello, do you have any summer job openings?”
The female server looked up at Xu Ye and said, “Our Madam is in the storage room. Wait a moment; I’ll call her.”
“All right, thank you.”
Soon after, a woman around thirty-five walked in through the back door. She wore a short black T-shirt that revealed her flat, fair stomach. Her light blue, fitted jeans perfectly showcased her long legs. On her feet were short high heels, and her five toenails were painted bright red—both sexy and charming.
She looked Xu Ye up and down, smiling as she said, “Handsome, are you here looking for a job?”
“Yes, I just finished the university entrance exam and want to find a summer job.”
“I see.” The woman smiled and asked, “Do you have any special skills?”
Xu Ye answered honestly, “My special skill is having special skills.”
The female server standing nearby didn’t understand what Xu Ye meant at all, but the Madam of the tavern paused for two seconds after hearing this and then covered her mouth to laugh.
“You really are a smooth-talking little handsome guy. Alright, I won’t tease you. Our tavern’s business hours are from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Can you work those hours?”
“No problem. I usually have evening study sessions until after ten anyway.”
“The monthly salary is 2,800 yuan, plus full attendance bonus.”
Although 2,800 yuan a month was a bit low, Xu Ye didn’t have better options at the moment. After asking around earlier, the best offer he found was only 2,500 yuan per month. Here, the job only required six hours a day, which was relatively flexible.
Xu Ye thought it over briefly and agreed, “No problem. When can I start?”
“Today.”
“Uh… can it be tomorrow? I need to go home and tell my family first.”
The Madam smiled warmly, like an auntie: “That’s fine.”
“My name’s Xu Ye—‘Ye’ like in ‘wild.’ Madam, what’s your name?”
The Madam hadn’t expected Xu Ye to ask her name. She paused for a moment but then smiled and said, “Pei Youwei.”
“Alright then, I’ll come by at this time tomorrow. Madam, see you tomorrow.”
“See you tomorrow~”
After Xu Ye left, Pei Youwei squinted her eyes and smiled. Actually, the tavern wasn’t short on staff. This music-themed tavern wasn’t like a nightclub; most customers were regulars, and it didn’t get too busy at night. But Pei Youwei thought having such an interesting little handsome guy around would probably be fun.
Besides, she wasn’t running the tavern to make money.
…
“Brother Wei, it’s settled. Let’s go.”
“What’s the deal?”
“The Madam already agreed. I can start working there tomorrow.”
“For real?”
“Seriously, you didn’t see her—she’s really something. Big chest, slim waist, perky behind, beautiful face, sweet voice, long legs—absolutely stunning.”
Qin Zhiwei looked doubtful. “I don’t buy it.”
Xu Ye kept walking ahead without a care and said, “Believe it or not, it’s up to you.”
Qin Zhiwei hurried to catch up. “Damn, take me there and show me.”
“Are you an idiot? If you want to go, go by yourself.”
“Ye, big brother!”
“Calling me Dad won’t work either.”
“Forget it. I’m free anyway. Once you’ve settled in at the tavern, I’ll come over and hang out with you.”
Xu Ye crossed his arms behind his head and twisted his neck. “Wei, do you want to get rich?”
“Of course.”
“How about you lend me some money, and by this time next year, I’ll pay you back double.”
Seeing how confident Xu Ye was, Qin Zhiwei asked curiously, “Got some way to make money?”
Xu Ye hesitated, then smiled, “I heard there’s an internet café having a grand opening promotion—recharge 500 yuan and get 1,000 yuan free. The more you recharge, the more they give. In theory, as long as we have enough money, doubling or even tripling our assets shouldn’t be a problem.”
“You’re messing with me again, right?”
“Wei.”
“Xu, if you call me ‘Wei’ again after university, I’ll seriously get mad!”
“See that tree up ahead?”
“What about it?”
“If you can touch one of those leaves, then you’re really impressive!”
“Keep your eyes wide open and watch me.”
“Damn, let me try again.”
“Wrong posture this time, wait a sec.”
“Xu Ye, did you see that? I actually touched it.”
Watching Qin Zhiwei jump under the tree again and again like a fool, Xu Ye suddenly burst out laughing.
Qin Zhiwei, confused, asked, “What are you laughing at?”
“Nothing, just happy. Wei Ge, you’ve got damn good luck knowing me in this lifetime. When I get rich, I’ll definitely take you along with me.”
Qin Zhiwei curled his lip, looking disgusted. “Who’s gonna hang out with who isn’t certain yet.”
…
Back at home.
Old Xu and Zhang Hong had already finished work.
Xu Ye quickly shared his plan about wanting a summer job with them. Unexpectedly, his Mother opposed after hearing it: “You just finished the university entrance exam, why work a summer job? It’s not like I don’t give you pocket money.”
“Mom, summer vacation is three months long. I want to work for two months first, then use the money to travel.”
“How much would a trip cost? I’ll give it to you.”
Zhang Hong wasn’t really worried about her son working outside but thought Xu Ye had been exhausted after three years of high school. Since he just finished the university entrance exam, he should rest well at home for a while.
Old Xu could tell Zhang Hong was worried about their son, but when he saw Xu Ye giving him a look, he quickly played the peacemaker: “Our son is an adult now. It’s good for him to gain some experience early. Let’s not worry so much.”
“Yeah, yeah, you two are always on the same side. I’m the bad guy here.”
Xu Ye quickly acted spoiled, resting his head on Zhang Hong’s shoulder and said, “Mom, don’t worry. If you ever argue with Dad, I’ll definitely take your side unconditionally.”
“Heh, you little rascal, you’ve got no conscience at all. I just finished speaking well of you, and you turn around and betray me.”
