I’ve Got a Knack for Investigation
I’ve Got a Knack for Investigation Chapter 016 Part 3

Ah Hao got into the police car. The police car drove through the rain, speeding away with them.

Lin Shuyue covered her eyes and squatted down, crying silently.

An umbrella was held over her head at some point. She covered her face and took several deep breaths before looking up at the person holding the umbrella for her.

Hang Jiabai stood as straight as a green pine tree, a step away from her. One of his shoulders was soaked by the rain, and raindrops pattered on the umbrella.

Under the rain, mixed with the lights not far away, Hang Jiabai, standing against the light, looked a bit gentler.

Lin Shuyue stood up, wiped the tears from her face, and said with a heavy nasal tone, “Thank you.”

Hang Jiabai shook his head. His voice was as clear as ever, the most alluring kind of young man’s voice. “You’re welcome. Reporter Lin, I’ll arrange for someone to take you back.”

Lin Shuyue didn’t refuse. This damn place was remote and far away. Usually, she had to walk for half an hour to catch a bus just to go out. It was already this late, and it was raining so heavily. Lin Shuyue didn’t want to go through the trouble. “Thank you.”

Hang Jiabai waved towards the sports field, and a police car drove up to Lin Shuyue. Lin Shuyue stood under the umbrella held by Hang Jiabai and looked around at this hellish school.

The school, which used to fall into darkness after nightfall, was now brightly lit, with police officers shuttling through every corner.

Staff members, including Tian Li, had been brought under control and were squatting in a row in the office on the first floor.

All the students had been taken away.

Lin Shuyue got into the police car.

The car started slowly. She had finished her first undercover assignment in her career.

The police car stopped in the city center. Lin Shuyue stood in place and watched the police car drive away. She didn’t choose to go back. It was already past ten o’clock. Lin Shuxing must have already fallen asleep. If she went back this late with red eyes, it would clearly look like she had been crying, which would unnecessarily worry her.

Lin Shuyue found the nearest hotel, booked a room, took a shower, changed into the pajamas from her house system’s backpack, lay down on the soft bed, and fell asleep instantly.

This was the first good night’s sleep she had since entering the internet addiction school.

The next day, she woke up at six o’clock, feeling completely refreshed.

Lin Shuyue changed into the clothes she had taken off yesterday, which had been washed and dried. She pulled open the hotel curtains.

It had rained so heavily last night, but this morning the sky had cleared up. The sun in the east was about to rise, dyeing the morning glow red. The road below, washed by the rain, still had some moisture, so even the air carried a bit of humidity. The trees planted by the roadside were even greener, only the flowers in the flowerbeds had their petals knocked off, scattered in the flowerbeds.

Lin Shuyue went downstairs to check out. She ordered a bowl of steamed rice noodles with extra meat and eggs at the breakfast shop next to the hotel, and poured a cup of tea, and the aroma filling the room made her mouth water.

The food Mei Daliang made tasted terrible. Lin Shuyue had been eating it for more than a week and couldn’t stand it anymore. She had finally managed to get out yesterday, but she was worried about the students at the school, so she hadn’t enjoyed her meal.

The steamed rice noodles came up quickly. Lin Shuyue scooped a spoonful of the chopped chili peppers from the table, mixed it in, and immediately put it in her mouth. As soon as the steamed rice noodles entered her mouth, she felt so happy she could burst into bubbles!

This was real food! The food Mei Daliang made was an insult to even pig feed!!!

Lin Shuyue finished a bowl of fried rice noodles with a reverent heart, drank two cups of tea that didn’t taste much like tea, paid the bill, and walked toward the Public Security Bureau.

Having eaten her fill and resolved the matter of the internet addiction school, Lin Shuyue felt that even the dirty stray dogs on the roadside looked particularly delicate and attractive.

In a good mood, she bought a few sausages from a roadside shop, peeled them open, and placed them on the clean ground. The stray dogs had been watching her warily from not far away. As soon as she walked away, the stray dogs couldn’t wait to rush towards the sausages.

When she entered the reception hall, many students were sitting on the chairs. They had changed into a new set of clothes and were either lying down or sitting, some simply curled up on the ground, sleeping soundly.

The air conditioning in the reception room was set to 26 degrees Celsius, making the students sleep even more comfortably.

He Yuling was working at the computer. Seeing her come in, she immediately waved at her. Lin Shuyue walked over.

He Yuling got up and poured her a glass of water, asking softly, “Reporter Lin, have you eaten?”

“I ate some fried rice noodles, what about you?”

He Yuling shook her head. “Not yet. I’ve been working overtime since yesterday until now, and haven’t closed my eyes once.”

Lin Shuyue expressed her sympathy and then asked, “Have the parents of these students arrived?”

He Yuling covered her mouth with her hand and yawned. “We’ve notified them one by one. The ones who lived closer have already been taken away by their parents overnight. The ones who live further away should be arriving soon. There’s still a tough battle ahead.”

The Superior Internet Addiction School’s advertisements had spread throughout the entire province. There were many local students, and quite a few from other cities as well. Last night’s rain was heavy, and since not every family had a private car at this time, many parents of the students had not yet arrived.

She sat down next to He Yuling and chatted with her in a low voice. At this moment, Hang Jiabai came downstairs. Seeing Lin Shuyue, he called her name. Lin Shuyue said something to He Yuling and walked over to him. Hang Jiabai led her upstairs.

Once they passed the turn on the stairs, Hang Jiabai spoke. “After you captured Duan Taoyong last time, the bureau applied for a ‘Heroic and Righteous Act’ title for you. The bonus and commendation have already been issued. However, we contacted your newspaper before, and they said you were on assignment, so we haven’t given it to you yet.”

“Yesterday when you came, I also forgot to mention this to you. It just so happens that you’re here today. The bureau said they want to hold a commendation meeting for you…”

Lin Shuyue interrupted him at this point. “Captain Hang, I won’t attend the commendation meeting. My profession is also quite special. At this stage, I don’t want to show my face.”

Lin Shuyue possessed the Good and Evil Detection System, and she would be exposing criminals frequently in the future. Undercover missions like this one would be even more common. This kind of commendation meeting would have reporters attending. For her safety and the safety of her family, the less she showed her face, the better.

Hang Jiabai glanced at Lin Shuyue and said, “Okay, then I’ll tell the leader. We will completely respect your wishes!”

Lin Shuyue smiled at Hang Jiabai, and the two turned onto the second floor, arriving at the familiar reception room again.

Hang Jiabai left Lin Shuyue in the reception room and went out. After a while, he brought back her bag and personal belongings that she had left at the internet addiction school. Lin Shuyue thanked him. Hang Jiabai then gave her a pen and a notebook. “I think you’ll need these.”

The two sat down as they had during Lin Shuyue’s first interview with Hang Jiabai. Before Lin Shuyue could speak, Hang Jiabai said, “We had the pills you gave us tested yesterday. The test results came out in the afternoon. It’s a type of psychiatric antidepressant. Long-term use has obvious side effects.”

“For example, gastrointestinal discomfort such as nausea, loss of appetite, and diarrhea. Headaches, anxiety, weakness, drowsiness, insomnia, and dizziness may also occur. Rare adverse reactions include allergic rashes and decreased sexual function. However, withdrawal symptoms such as insomnia, anxiety, nausea, sweating, dizziness, or abnormal sensations may be seen upon stopping the medication.”ยน

This prescription drug was supposed to be taken at most one pill at a time, but the internet addiction school’s dosage was two pills regardless of whether the student was sick or what illness they had! And they had to take it for three months!

Three months of this would definitely cause some damage to the body! The person who tested the drug cursed out loud when they found out it was being given to minors!

“After receiving your report, we began to arrange the arrest plan. The city bureau was worried that the internet addiction school had a ‘protective umbrella’ and therefore didn’t make it public, instead letting the nearest police station to the internet addiction school handle it, which is why they arrived a bit late,” Hang Jiabai explained to Lin Shuyue why they had arrived so late.

As someone who had been a police reserve in her previous life, Lin Shuyue completely understood this.

“Last night, we conducted overnight investigations into the instructors and school staff involved. They confessed to the accusations of abusing the children. We also investigated Xiao Changxin. He insisted that his was a legitimate school and that the treatment of the students was legal and compliant.”

“We will conduct further investigation into this.”

Hang Jiabai thought for a moment and then revealed some more details to Lin Shuyue. “During our interrogation of the accountant named Tian Li, she said that the school had once electrocuted a student to death, and the instructors had crippled two others. Both incidents were eventually settled with money.”

“Our colleagues went over there in the early hours of the morning, and we should have news back soon,” Hang Jiabai said, a flash of anger in his eyes as he spoke of the student who had been electrocuted to death and the two students who had been crippled.

If the previous reports Lin Shuyue had made could only result in a two or three-year sentence for the main culprit Xiao Changxin, then after a death was involved, Xiao Changxin’s crime would not be so simple.

Lin Shuyue wasn’t surprised to hear this. With the kind of educational methods used by internet addiction schools, deaths were all too common.

Lin Shuyue only felt sorry for that young life and the two children who could have grown up healthy but were crippled instead.

Hang Jiabai didn’t say any more, and Lin Shuyue didn’t ask. This one piece of news was enough for her to write a report.

Lin Shuyue asked a few questions and then ended the interview.

Lin Shuyue took the copied version of the evidence she had submitted from Hang Jiabai’s hands. Hang Jiabai had marked the parts that were not suitable for broadcast.

Lin Shuyue looked and saw that they were all about the girls’ private matters.

Lin Shuyue hadn’t intended to broadcast this part anyway. This world was so harsh on girls. Whenever something related to “sex” happened, people would never condemn the men who harmed the women, only focus on the injured girls.

When such things happened, there was never a shortage of people saying: Why doesn’t anyone else get hurt, only you?

Why don’t you wear more clothes? Don’t blame others for harming you when you dress like that!

Why aren’t you more careful? These kinds of things happen because you’re too promiscuous. If you were more dignified, this definitely wouldn’t have happened!!

Even in many sexual assault cases, the last straw that broke the victimized girls was often from their closest relatives!

Lin Shuyue chose not to report on them, also based on this consideration. She was afraid that after the report came out, the girls from the internet addiction school would not only have to endure the judgmental looks of outsiders but also suffer the humiliation and scolding of their families.

Lin Shuyue said to Hang Jiabai, “Captain Hang, don’t worry, I won’t report these things.” After a pause, Lin Shuyue looked into Hang Jiabai’s narrow and deep eyes and said, “I thank you on their behalf.”

Hang Jiabai looked at the girl in front of him, his eyes full of admiration.
