After the “Focus Interview – Internet Addiction School” episode aired, the viewership reached its peak. Before the interview program even ended, countless phone calls flooded the production team.
The next day, Lin Shuyue had just entered the newspaper office when she was stopped by Xiao He at the front desk. Lin Shuyue walked over to her, and Xiao He took a bag from the desk and gave it to her.
“Reporter Lin, these are all your letters. I just brought them back from the mailbox outside.” As part of her routine at the newspaper, Xiao He had to check the company mailbox every day before work.
Usually, there would be at most twenty or thirty letters a day, but this morning when she checked, the mailbox was overflowing, and most of the letters were addressed to Lin Shuyue.
Xiao He had been working here for so long, and this was the first time she had seen a reporter receive so many letters!
But thinking about yesterday’s front-page newspaper and the Focus Interview that aired in the evening, it was understandable. Internet addiction school, huh? The advertisements were so good, on TV, radio, newspapers, magazines, and flyers – they invested in anything that could reach the public.
Who in Peng City didn’t know about the existence of internet addiction schools? As a result, when such a well-advertised school suddenly exploded with this kind of problem, everyone was completely stunned.
Those electroshock devices, the Dragon Whips made of steel bars, and the myriad cruel tortures were even more brutal than those in ancient times. They left the naive people who hadn’t seen the world completely dumbfounded.
Knowing that this matter was reported by their newspaper, Xiao He had been receiving calls from relatives and friends until past ten o’clock last night, all asking about the truth of the matter.
Some people who had sent their children to internet addiction schools even called Xiao He crying. Xiao He had confirmed with her colleagues that they had also received such calls last night.
They had already discussed this matter yesterday. It was said that the advertising department was now celebrating that they hadn’t taken this advertisement in the first place.
It was also said that parents were constantly calling the TV station to scold them!
“Thanks, Xiao He.”
“You’re welcome, Reporter Lin.”
Lin Shuyue felt very novel. This was the first time in her life she had received letters. This traditional means of communication was something she had only seen in her parents’ drawers. She had been using a Little Genius children’s smartwatch phone to contact classmates and friends since she was in elementary school.
Paper letters were truly a first for her.
She took the bag of letters back to her workstation.
Then she saw Li Weisheng. Li Weisheng still looked like someone owed him a lot of money and even rolled his eyes at Lin Shuyue.
During Lin Shuyue’s absence, he had indeed landed a big news story, reporting on a construction site in Ping’an District. A migrant worker had worked for a contractor for more than a year but hadn’t received a penny of his wages. When he went to ask for the money, he was beaten.
This news received much attention as soon as it was reported, causing a good deal of discussion among people from all walks of life. In the end, the worker successfully received his overdue wages, and Li Weisheng also gained a lot of limelight because of this.
But his complacency came to an abrupt end after Lin Shuyue returned from her undercover assignment.
He had just thought that since Lin Shuyue had been away undercover for so many days without any news, but just a few days after he was feeling pleased with himself, Lin Shuyue returned and brought back such big news.
Li Weisheng had watched Lin Shuyue’s report and the Focus Interview. He had to admit that he admired Lin Shuyue. While admiring her, it also ignited his competitive spirit!
They had joined the newspaper office together, and Li Weisheng had always been overwhelming Lin Shuyue before. Because of this, Li Weisheng had always felt a sense of superiority in front of Lin Shuyue.
The last time Lin Shuyue caught a murderer, it had already made him feel a sense of crisis, but he felt that Lin Shuyue had purely gotten lucky. Duan Taoyong was just a piece of trash who only dared to attack children. How much ability could such a person have? Would he dare to commit such a crime against an adult?
Lin Shuyue catching him was purely a blind cat bumping into a dead mouse.
Li Weisheng was not convinced! But this time, she had come up with another big news story! The reaction was even more enthusiastic than the last time she captured Duan Taoyong! Li Weisheng couldn’t accept the gap of being overtaken by Lin Shuyue.
He looked at the bag of letters Lin Shuyue was carrying and vowed that he must come up with a big news story to make readers send him so many letters too!
Thinking of this, he directly left with his camera on his back. This made Qian Yongqiang, who had just walked to his workstation to flatter him, feel very embarrassed.
Everyone in the office saw it, but no one sympathized with him. He flattered those above him and went to great lengths to brown-nose them, but he hated those below him, wishing he could step on even the ants that passed by. No one in the entire newspaper office liked him.
Lin Shuyue didn’t even notice Li Weisheng. She felt very novel about the fact that people were writing letters to her.
In her previous life, communication was developed, and there were various ways to connect. Writing letters as a means of communication was rarely used anymore. Without exaggeration, these letters were the first handwritten letters Lin Shuyue had received in her life.
Most of these letters didn’t have postmarks, and some envelopes didn’t even have a return address. It was obvious that people had come directly overnight to throw the letters into the mailbox. Lin Shuyue’s mood suddenly became complicated.
The first letter was written by a girl named Huang Xiaoqin. She said that she also liked to go online to make friends and play games. Because she was too addicted, her parents had decided to send her to an internet addiction school. Even her luggage had been packed, but after seeing the report written by Lin Shuyue yesterday morning, her parents were both shocked and angry and gave up on this idea.
Her grandparents had even come over to argue with her parents because of this.
Her grandfather had even taken out his shoe sole and chased her father for quite a distance, saying that her father liked to play with toy cards when he was a child, playing all day long, to the point where he would forget to eat and drink. They hadn’t thought of sending him to others to be taught back then, so why should they send her out to be taught by others now?
Did she not have a father, or did she not have a mother?
In the end, her father couldn’t defeat her grandparents and quickly gave in. Her father even apologized to her.
At the end of the letter, Huang Xiaoqin thanked Lin Shuyue. Mysteriously, she always felt that this report issued by Lin Shuyue had changed her life.
Lin Shuyue finished reading this letter with a smile. The existence of this letter made Lin Shuyue feel that everything she had done was meaningful.
She was not a savior, nor was she a god, but her actions could change the fate of others, even if it was just one person. In her opinion, that was worth celebrating!
While putting this letter back into the envelope, she saw another slip of paper inside. Lin Shuyue took it out and unfolded it. It had a person’s name written on it, along with a flamboyant “Thank you.” Judging by the name, this person was Huang Xiaoqin’s father.
Lin Shuyue treasured this letter dearly and put it back. After thinking for a moment, she took out some stationery from her desk drawer and wrote a reply to the girl named Huang Xiaoqin. She put it in an envelope, wrote the delivery address, and set it aside.
She continued to open the letters.
If the first letter had brought a smile to Lin Shuyue’s face, then the second letter made that smile vanish.
This letter was written by a boy who had graduated from the internet addiction school. He introduced himself in the letter as Xiao Gang. In the letter, he described his experiences at Superior Internet Addiction School and talked about the changes in him after graduating.
He didn’t like to talk anymore, nor did he like to go out. He didn’t want to see anyone, especially his parents. Seeing his parents filled him with uncontrollable resentment and despair.
But he had to face them. Every day, he played the role of an obedient, well-behaved, and sensible son in front of his parents.
Because if he was even a little disobedient, his parents would say they would send him back to the internet addiction school.
He was working very hard at his studies now. He was about to graduate from high school. His teacher said he could get into college, but he didn’t want to go. He wanted to go out to work as soon as he got his ID card after graduation, anywhere was fine, as long as he left this home, left this city, and never came back.
He said that wherever his parents were, even if the sun was shining brightly, he felt like he was living in a space filled with dark clouds, thunder, and lightning.
Finally, he wrote this paragraph: After I came back from the internet addiction school, my parents and relatives were very happy with my changes. Their friends around them all said they wanted to send their children there for transformation. When I told them about my experiences at the school, they didn’t believe me and even said I was lying. My parents scolded me because of this, saying I made them lose face.
They were extremely angry. I was afraid of being sent away, so I didn’t dare to continue talking. I kept the events that happened in the internet addiction school a secret. I’m a coward. You did something I couldn’t do. Thank you for exposing the internet addiction school. This way, fewer people will suffer in the future.
Lin Shuyue felt heavy-hearted after reading this.
She opened other letters. Children who had stayed at the internet addiction school wrote about their experiences inside, the changes after they returned, and their determination to escape their families. Many had even attempted suicide.
Besides these, there were also letters from parents who wanted to send their children to the school for transformation, saying that Lin Shuyue had fabricated facts. They bitterly complained about the hardships of raising children and accused Lin Shuyue of criticizing them without understanding their difficulties. Some even cursed Lin Shuyue, wishing that when she got married and had children, her children would also be so disobedient.
Of course, such letters were in the minority. Most of the letters from parents still thanked Lin Shuyue a lot. They were grateful for Lin Shuyue’s report, which had prevented them from making a big mistake.
Lin Shuyue replied to the children who had come out of the internet addiction school one by one. After putting these new letters back into the bag, it was already lunchtime. Lin Shuyue didn’t go to the cafeteria to eat. Right now, she desperately needed some heavily flavored food to prolong her life. The food in the cafeteria was too bland and couldn’t satisfy her.
She planned to mail the replies she had written while going out for lunch.
Li Mingfang also wanted to go out to improve her meals, so the two went out together.
They had just stepped out of the building’s door when someone called out to them. Lin Shuyue turned her head to look. The person who called her was Ah Hao. The wounds on his face hadn’t healed yet, but his hair had been cut again, no longer as uneven as it was at the internet addiction school.
Ah Hao ran towards Lin Shuyue.
