Han Jiayue’s matter was just a minor incident, easily resolved. However, there was a more difficult issue to deal with.
That was the second brother-in-law, Chen Youquan.
There was also a girl from Han family village who had married into their village. She happened to be visiting her family and learned that Han Shiguo and Jiang Qian had returned for the New Year.
After returning to her husband’s home, she told Han Shiyun and Chen Youquan.
Han Shiyun specifically informed her elder sister, Han Shicai, but Han Shicai planned to come over a couple of days later. Her husband, Zhang Fa, and their eldest son had unexpectedly found a broken fishing net. After repairing it, they went fishing in the icy river.
They actually caught some fish, so they decided to save them up and bring them over later to add to the meal.
Therefore, Chen Youquan and Han Shiyun came back with their children first.
Besides their eldest daughter, Chen Xiaohui, who was already married, they brought their unmarried second daughter, Chen Xiaozhu, third daughter, Chen Xiaoting, and son, Chen Xiaoyang.
Han Shiyun also brought a chicken for her three nephews to nourish their bodies.
Jiang Qian smiled, “Second Sister, why did you bring a chicken? We have chickens here. Just keep the chicken for the children to nourish their bodies.”
Han Shiyun chuckled, “This is for my three nephews.”
She looked at her brother’s wife, her eyes filled with tenderness. This was a great contributor to the family. Look at the three adorable nephews she had given birth to for her little brother.
As a loving aunt, Han Shiyun’s affection for her nephews was genuine.
She called the triplets over and took a good look at them. The more she looked, the more she liked them.
The triplets were also very well-behaved, calling out to their second aunt and thanking her for bringing them a chicken.
“You’re welcome. It’s what second aunt should do,” Han Shiyun chuckled. After all these years, it was just one chicken, what was the big deal?
Jiang Qian took out some candy and gave a handful to her two nieces and nephew, Chen Xiaoyang.
Of course, Han Jiadong, Han Jiawei, and Han Jiaxing also received some.
“Little Aunt, you already gave us some,” Han Jiadong said.
When they came back, they had brought a big bag of candy for themselves to share.
“It’s okay,” Jiang Qian smiled, giving them each a big handful.
Han Jiawei was ecstatic. After thanking his Little Aunt, he happily pulled his brothers out to play.
Han Jiaxing shyly smiled, but she was also very happy. It was only after their Little Aunt came back that she tasted what candy was like.
However, she wanted to hide the rest and eat it slowly. She couldn’t let her sister find out. Last time, her sister quickly finished hers and even stole some of hers!
When she questioned her sister, she denied it!
This time, Han Jiaxing learned her lesson and hid the candy in a more secret place.
The children went to play, and the adults sat down to chat.
Chen Youquan ate a handful of candy that Jiang Qian had just given him and started praising his mother-in-law, Han’s mother, with a chuckle, “It’s been a few years since we last met. Mother, how come you’re looking younger? You look even younger than before.”
Han’s mother had heard enough of these compliments, and she knew what kind of person her second son-in-law was. She calmly replied that the water and soil there were nourishing.
Chen Youquan chuckled, “The water and soil are nourishing, but it’s also because Shiguo and his wife are filial.”
“That’s only right. Mother worked so hard helping us raise the children. It’s our duty to be filial to her,” Jiang Qian chimed in.
Han’s mother laughed and said, “What hardship? You didn’t let me do any work.”
As they were talking and laughing, Lixia returned from outside.
Seeing the chicken in the courtyard, she immediately exclaimed, “Oh, Second Sister, you only needed to come! Why be so polite and bring a chicken?”
Chen Youquan immediately chimed in, “That’s only right. It’s rare for Shiguo and his wife to bring the triplets back, so this chicken is a special treat from Shiyun for her three nephews, specifically for their nourishment.”
Everyone understood; in fact, as soon as they entered, Chen Youquan had stated that this chicken was for the triplets, with no one else getting any.
Lixia said, “…”
She had thought it was for everyone!
Pouting, she remarked, “Is that so? Jiadong and the others haven’t eaten your chicken yet!”
Since Han Jiadong was older, he didn’t play with his younger brothers. Hearing this, he quickly replied, “We’re older now, we don’t need it. Just let the younger brothers have it!”
He felt quite helpless. It was clear that his Second uncle had said it so obviously, yet his mother still insisted on arguing about it. Eating one more piece of chicken wouldn’t make anyone gain weight!
Chen Youquan chuckled, “Jiadong is still sensible.”
The implication was that you, as a mother, really didn’t understand!
Lixia rolled her eyes dramatically.
But Chen Youquan wasn’t swayed by her attitude. He knew what kind of person this children’s aunt was—she was quite a hoarder!
Besides, his family had never really received anything from her. Over the past few years during festivals, Han Shiyun occasionally brought back some eggs or something, but she never left any food behind.
And when they returned on the second day of the New Year, they hadn’t come empty-handed either, yet she still cooked with reluctance.
So why should they give her a chicken to eat? Who did she think she was?
Jiang Qian didn’t comment much either. Although she didn’t care about the chicken, she didn’t want Han Jiayue to get a share because of what she had done.
When it came time to stew it, she would just call the other nephews and nieces over to eat, but Han Jiayue would definitely not be included!
Yes, she was that petty!
It was Han’s father who changed the subject, asking Chen Youquan about this year’s harvest as the father and son-in-law chatted outside.
While they were talking, Han’s mother called Han Shiyun back into the house for a more private conversation.
Actually, Han’s mother was somewhat dissatisfied with her son-in-law, as he didn’t seem to have changed much over the years. In contrast, her daughter, Han Shiyun, looked much more worn.
Though she didn’t say anything directly, once she called Han Shiyun into the room, she certainly wanted to ask a few questions.
Han Shiyun smiled, “It’s nothing much; we’re still doing alright.”
Her eldest uncle’s salary was shared evenly every month. With that income, they might not have lavish meals, but they could manage to get by.
How many people could say that? Han Shiyun was a content person; she didn’t feel life was hard.
Seeing her daughter like this, Han’s mother understood. While making her a nourishing drink, she advised, “You shouldn’t be too honest; take some time to rest when you can. Don’t push yourself just to prove a point, or you’ll be the one suffering.”
“I know, Mother, you don’t need to worry about me,” Han Shiyun replied with a smile. “I know that you’re well taken care of by Qianqian and Shiguo, but I didn’t expect you to be doing so well over there.”
Seeing her mother live comfortably these past few years made her happy.
Han’s mother laughed, “Your little brother doesn’t care about me; it’s all Jiang Qian. You have no idea how much she worries about me.”
“Yes, I can tell,” Han Shiyun smiled.
Her sister-in-law was indeed a gentle and filial person.
