Chapter 22: The Healer in the Deep Mountains Saves Lives
After Bai Linglong left the Chen family with Xiaocui and Doctor Zhang, Doctor Zhang was still immersed in his admiration for Bai Linglong’s medical skills, unable to hold back as he spoke again: “Master, your acupuncture technique and the combination of herbs are truly exquisite. There are so many aspects I haven’t fully grasped yet. Could you explain them to me again?”
Bai Linglong smiled at him and patiently replied, “The art of medicine is vast and profound. You should study medical texts diligently and combine that knowledge with clinical practice; you will gradually come to understand. Take this case of Young Master, for example. Although it appeared complex, as long as we pinpoint the root cause of the illness and treat it accordingly, we can achieve a cure.”
Once they returned to Qingyan Mountain, they had no time to rest before they saw a young servant rushing up from the foot of the mountain, panting heavily. Upon seeing Bai Linglong, he dropped to his knees, exclaiming, “Miraculous Doctor, please help my master! My master suddenly started coughing up blood and fell unconscious. The doctors in the city are helpless, and I heard of your miraculous skills. Please show your compassion!”
Bai Linglong’s expression changed immediately, and she stood up. “Don’t worry; get up and lead the way. We’ll go right away.”
Arriving at the servant’s home, they found a middle-aged man lying on the bed, his face pale and his breath weak.
Bai Linglong stepped forward to take his pulse, her brow furrowing. She then took out silver needles from her medical kit and quickly began to administer acupuncture.
As she worked, she explained to Doctor Zhang, “This man has liver qi stagnation causing fire, which has burned the lung meridians, resulting in coughing up blood. These needles will first stabilize his qi and blood, then we’ll use herbs to regulate his liver.”
Doctor Zhang listened intently, observing Bai Linglong’s technique, nodding occasionally as he pondered the concepts.
Once she had finished the treatment and was preparing to leave, she noticed the young servant hesitating, mumbling, “Miraculous Doctor, to be honest, we have very little money left to treat my master…”
Bai Linglong waved her hand, speaking gently, “It’s alright. The priority is to treat his illness; we can discuss the fee later.”
The young servant was grateful, repeatedly bowing in gratitude.
By the time they returned to Qingyan Mountain, night had fallen.
Xiaocui couldn’t help but complain, “Sister, look at you! You’ve saved lives and waived the fees, but what benefits have you gained after a whole day of work?”
Bai Linglong lightly tapped Xiaocui on the head, saying, “As Doctors, our priority should always be saving lives. Money is merely an external matter. How can we turn a blind eye to suffering because of the consultation fee?”
Doctor Zhang nodded in agreement, “Xiaocui, what Master says is correct. The essence of medicine lies in compassion and skill. There is still much for us to learn.”
As the night grew quiet, Bai Linglong sat by the window, opening her medical books to continue her studies. The moonlight bathed her in a soft glow, outlining her figure her focused and determined profile.
Meanwhile, at the Chen family residence, Madam Chen was sincerely kneeling before the Buddhist altar, murmuring, “Thank you, Miraculous Doctor, for saving my son’s life. May the Bodhisattva bless the Miraculous Doctor with a smooth and prosperous life, granting peace and health.”
On the other side, in the city’s medical hall, several doctors gathered together, discussing animatedly.
“Have you heard? That Miraculous Doctor has cured another critically ill person and even waived the consultation fee.”
“Hmph, she’s just been lucky; there’s no way her medical skills are that extraordinary.”
“We can’t say that. She has consecutively treated difficult cases, and that’s not something luck can explain.”
“Maybe she has some secret formula that makes her so effective.”
Their voices echoed in the night, but Bai Linglong remained oblivious to the whispers. She continued to immerse herself in the world of medicine, dedicating her skills and efforts to every patient who came seeking her help.
