Chapter 27: “Miraculous Doctor, Please Save My Father”
Just as Bai Linglong was about to check the old man’s pulse, a commotion of hurried footsteps approached from afar.
The crowd turned their heads to see a young servant rushing in, calling out loudly before he even entered, “Miraculous Doctor, my master is gravely ill and unconscious. Please, you must come with me!”
Bai Linglong’s expression faltered as she gestured to the patients in line, saying, “I already have so many patients waiting here, and I truly cannot leave immediately.”
The young servant, sweating profusely, fell to his knees with a thud. “Miraculous , please save my master! The doctors in the city have all given up. Only you can save him! My master cannot have any accidents!”
At this moment, the people waiting in line began to murmur among themselves.
A middle-aged woman spoke up, “Miraculous Doctor, saving lives is paramount. You should go check on that master first; we can wait.”
Others echoed her sentiment, expressing their understanding.
A wave of emotion surged through Bai Linglong’s heart. After giving it some thought, she told to Doctor Zhang “Doctor Zhang, please help me maintain order here and explain the situation to everyone. I’ll be back as soon as possible and will try not to delay anyone’s treatment.”
After stating that, she quickly packed her medicine box and followed the young servant out in a hurry. Upon arriving at the wealthy family’s home, Bai Linglong was led into a spacious bedroom.
There, she saw an elderly man lying on the bed, his complexion sallow and his body frail, with his eyes tightly closed, surrounded by anxious family members.
The old man’s son asked urgently, “Miraculous Doctor, does my father still have hope for recovery?”
Bai Linglong took a deep breath, her expression serious as she replied, “Your father is suffering from long-term overexertion and emotional distress, leading to severe liver and kidney failure. Toxins have accumulated in his body and cannot be expelled; he is in a dire state. However, I will combine ancient methods with my experience and do my utmost to try.”
With that, Bai Linglong quickly took out her specially prepared medicinal powder from her medicine box, mixed it with warm water, and administered it to the old man. Next, she retrieved her silver needles, precisely locating the acupoints to begin acupuncture.
As she worked, her hands were steady yet carried a sense of urgency; each needle was inserted with precision. At the same time, she continuously asked the family about the old man’s daily habits, dietary preferences, and other details, not missing any potential clues. After half an hour, Bai Linglong withdrew the silver needles, beads of sweat dotting her forehead.
She let out a long breath and said, “I’ve temporarily stabilized his condition, but this is only a stopgap measure. I will prepare a few strong medicines that attack toxins. If it’s taken on time, there might still be a glimmer of hope.”
The old man’s family was overjoyed, tears of gratitude brimming in their eyes. The old man’s son quickly pulled out a heavy ingot of silver, saying, “Miraculous Doctor, thank you so much! This is the consultation fee; please accept it.”
Bai Linglong accepted the silver, thanked them, and hurried back to the medical hall. Upon her return, she saw the patients still patiently waiting in line, and guilt washed over her.
She quickly walked to the entrance and bowed deeply to the crowd, saying, “I sincerely apologize for making everyone wait so long. Let’s begin the consultations now.”
The crowd expressed their understanding, showing no signs of complaint. Bai Linglong then sat down and started to treat the tattered old man.
After a careful examination, she said, “Elder, you have suffered from years of rheumatoid arthritis; your joints have become severely deformed. Coupled with long-term nutritional deficiencies, your body has weakened, exacerbating your condition. I will prescribe some medicines to dispel wind and dampness and to replenish qi and blood. I will also teach you some simple recovery exercises. If you stick to them, you will see improvements.”
The old man, filled with worry, asked, “Miraculous Doctor, are these medicines expensive? I’m afraid I…”
Bai Linglong interrupted him with a smile, “Elder, don’t worry. I will prescribe affordable medicines, and the costs won’t be high. If you are truly in a difficult situation, just give a token amount as a consultation fee.”
Tears brimmed in the old man’s eyes, and he trembled, unable to speak, but he bowed repeatedly in gratitude.
Next, Bai Linglong began to treat the following patient. This time, it was a young scholar who looked haggard, his eyes filled with anxiety.
“Miraculous Doctor, I’ve been having seizures lately, foaming at the mouth and twitching. The imperial examination is approaching, and I don’t know what to do!”
After carefully examining him, Bai Linglong replied, “Young man, this is a result of a past head injury, with blood stasis blocking the meridians, leading to frequent seizures. I will prescribe medicines to invigorate blood circulation and open up the mind. You should also pay attention to rest and avoid emotional distress.”
Upon hearing this, the scholar asked urgently, “Miraculous Doctor, how soon will the medicine take effect? I’m worried it will delay my examination.”
Bai Linglong reassured him, “If you take the medicine as prescribed, you should see significant improvement in three to five days. It won’t interfere with your exam.” And so, Bai Linglong continued to treat each patient one by one, patiently inquiring and carefully diagnosing, providing the most suitable treatment plans.
Before long, the sun began to set in the west, and she was close to finishing with today’s ten patients. At that moment, a commotion erupted outside the medical hall, and a young woman’s voice cried out, “Please, let me in! My younger brother is about to die!”
