Chapter 67: Praise Her if You Must, Why Insult Me?
Luo Qianyun sat back in her seat but found herself distracted by the glimpse she caught earlier.
She immediately pulled out her phone and called Lu Yunzheng, but no one answered.
Recalling his call before leaving work, Luo Qianyun started to feel uneasy. Could he be on a mission right now?
As she mulled over the thought, her attention shifted more toward the VIP section. Every time someone exited, she glanced their way.
At that moment, a middle-aged man with a broad, rough face emerged from the VIP area. His eyes scanned the bar, lingering on the young, beautiful women, finally landing on Luo Qianyun’s back.
“Miss, care to join me for a late-night snack?”
The man came over and rudely chased away the customer who had been sitting beside her, taking the seat for himself.
Behind him stood a group of shady-looking lackeys, who intimidated others into silence.
Luo Qianyun frowned slightly, not wanting to engage.
Song Yunjing, sitting next to her, immediately retorted coldly, “Who can’t afford their own midnight snack? Stop bothering my friend.”
The man’s face darkened at her words, and his lackeys instantly straightened up.
But Song Yunjing was unfazed. She pulled Luo Qianyun behind her and gestured for backup.
From all corners of the bar, several tall, burly men, all at least 1.8 meters tall, stood up. Though not wearing matching uniforms, it was evident they were bodyguards.
Seeing this, the lackeys hesitated.
After all, their ragtag crew stood no chance against these “regulars” who clearly meant business.
“What? Did you really think I’d come to a bar alone?” Song Yunjing sneered.
“Brother Biao…” The lackeys looked nervously at their leader, not daring to speak further.
The middle-aged man called Brother Biao laughed awkwardly. “Miss, don’t misunderstand. I just wanted to get to know your friend. You see, beauties like her are rare.”
“Whether she’s beautiful is none of your concern. Don’t bother us,” Song Yunjing replied sharply.
Since she had brought Luo Qianyun to the bar, she felt responsible for her safety—otherwise, her brother would never let her hear the end of it.
From afar, as Lu Yunzheng and Xiao Zhou exited the VIP area, they noticed the tense standoff.
This startled Xiao Zhou. “Brother Lu, why is your wife here? And why does it look like she’s caught up with Brother Biao?”
Lu Yunzheng’s brows furrowed slightly as he walked forward. Xiao Zhou panicked. “Brother Lu, you can’t let Brother Biao notice us now!”
They were in the middle of a sting operation. Blowing their cover would ruin everything.
“I know,” Lu Yunzheng said, but his unhurried steps did little to reassure Xiao Zhou.
Thankfully, Song Yunjing’s bodyguards arrived and formed a protective wall around her and Luo Qianyun.
Seeing this, Xiao Zhou quickly held Lu Yunzheng back. “Brother Lu, it’s fine now. Your wife’s side has more people than Brother Biao’s.”
“Mm.” Lu Yunzheng nodded and glanced at Xiao Zhou. “I’m not that impulsive.”
But why did Xiao Zhou look like he didn’t believe him?
From across the room, Lu Yunzheng exchanged a glance with the bar owner, catching the amused look in the latter’s eyes.
Meanwhile, Brother Biao was about to make trouble, but Song Yunjing’s bodyguards formed an impenetrable wall, forcing him to back off.
When Brother Biao seemed ready to explode in anger, his lackeys pulled him aside, urging him to let it go for the greater good.
Finally, when the group left, Song Yunjing breathed a sigh of relief. “Luckily, my brother anticipated this and told me to bring some bodyguards.”
“Some? That’s a whole squad,” Luo Qianyun said, also relieved.
“I can’t be blamed,” Song Yunjing replied, laughing. “When I was picking bodyguards, I couldn’t choose—each one had such a good physique. So, I just hired them all…”
As the two sat down to chat, the bar owner approached them. “You know Lu Yunzheng?”
Hearing the name, Luo Qianyun paused. “You know him?”
“What’s your relationship?” The bar owner smiled.
Luo Qianyun didn’t answer, glancing at Song Yunjing instead. She couldn’t gauge the bar owner’s intentions, but something about him felt off.
“Why do you ask? Are you friends with Lu Yunzheng?” Song Yunjing asked skeptically.
It was the first time she’d heard the bar owner mention Lu Yunzheng, and she hadn’t known they were acquainted.
“Friends?” The bar owner wiped a glass and chuckled. “Not exactly. But if he dies, I might send flowers to his grave.”
“Ugh, what’s with that? Are you cursing my friend to be a widow?” Song Yunjing said indignantly.
The bar owner looked at Luo Qianyun. “So he’s your boyfriend? You’d better prepare for the next one.”
“What do you mean?” Luo Qianyun couldn’t help but ask.
The bar owner didn’t answer, and Song Yunjing pressed, “What’s going on? Stop being so cryptic!”
“I didn’t want to cause trouble, but you keep asking.” The bar owner sighed.
Luo Qianyun cut to the chase. “If you really didn’t want to, you wouldn’t have brought up Lu Yunzheng in the first place.”
So, he was doing this on purpose.
The bar owner laughed at being exposed. “Didn’t expect Yunzheng to have such a clever friend.”
“Praise her if you must. Why insult me?” Song Yunjing huffed.
“Explain what you meant earlier,” Luo Qianyun demanded, worried about Lu Yunzheng.
The bar owner finally revealed, “Their operation has been compromised. There’s a mole. So, you might as well prepare for the worst.”
Song Yunjing gasped, turning to Luo Qianyun. “Qianyun…”
Luo Qianyun clenched her fists, forcing herself to stay calm. “Lu Yunzheng is here in this bar, isn’t he? I didn’t mistake him earlier.”
“They’re in the VIP area,” the bar owner confirmed.
“Can I go in?” Luo Qianyun asked.
“Even if you go now, it won’t help. It’s dangerous for a girl like you,” the bar owner advised.
“I’ll go with her, and we’ll bring the bodyguards,” Song Yunjing said resolutely.
“Use your brain.” The bar owner flicked her forehead. “The VIP area has few regular customers today. If you go in like this, you’ll be too conspicuous.”
Song Yunjing retorted, “He’s my friend’s husband. I can’t just stand by.”
“Is this information accurate?” Luo Qianyun asked.
“Because you’re Yunzheng’s friend, I told you. But remember, I don’t want to get involved. So…” The bar owner turned to Song Yunjing. “You can’t go in.”
