“You ask me this, and I really don’t know how to put it. But Xie Tao, for the sake of money, can do anything. Didn’t he cause trouble for our family before, just for money?” Jiang shi’s, for Xie Tao, was nothing more than a money-making tool.
If someone offered him a lot of money to kill his own mother, he might not hesitate to do it.
“Indeed.”
As they listened to the conversation between the two, the expressions of Grandpa Wang and the others were filled with shock. They frowned and looked at the two, “Do you suspect that Jiang shi’s death is related to Xie Tao?”
Jiang shi is Xie Tao’s mother; how could Xie Tao possibly do such a thing? This would be matricide.
“Right now, we’re just suspicious and haven’t fully confirmed. We need Yuan Xu and the others to investigate before we know the details,” Su Yu quickly explained when he saw the uneasy expressions on Grandpa Wang’s face.
Upon hearing this, Grandpa Wang finally relaxed, “That’s good. While we need to find the culprit, we also shouldn’t wrongly accuse someone.”
“Grandpa, rest assured, we’re aware of that,” Wang Jinhe nodded, trying to reassure him.
They naturally wouldn’t engage in baseless suspicions, but if they found evidence, they wouldn’t let Xie Tao off the hook.
That night, Yuan Xu, along with the hastily summoned Huang Qi, went to Jiang shi’s house together.
There was no one in the mourning hall; the entire courtyard was eerily quiet. Yuan Xu went over and looked at the uncovered coffin, gently pushing it open to see the body inside.
Huang Qi watched as Yuan Xu, expressionless, began examining the body, consoling himself continuously; they were accustomed to this.
But the problem was, he felt anything but accustomed.
“Huang Qi, come and take a look at what’s really going on with this person. Is it indeed a natural death?” Yuan Xu whispered.
Huang Qi walked over, took a glance, furrowed his brows slightly, and his complexion turned grim. He gently shook his head at Yuan Xu; this person didn’t die naturally. She was strangled. Judging by her facial expression, the person who strangled her was likely someone very close to her.
“I’ll go check on her son.”
After saying this, Yuan Xu walked to the next room. Candles were still lit there, and through the light, he could see someone who hadn’t slept yet, holding something silver-like in their hand.
He poked a hole in the window with his finger. Yuan Xu saw that the person was holding a silver ingot worth a hundred taels, and there was a box on the table in front of him, filled with gold ingots, worth at least over ten thousand taels of silver.
This revelation sparked additional thoughts in Yuan Xu’s mind. It seemed that Jiang shi did indeed die after Xie Tao took the silver.
For the sake of such a small amount of silver, Xie Tao would actually harm his own mother. It’s simply outrageous and despicable.
Yuan Xu, accompanied by Huang Qi, left quietly. When they returned, Su Yu was still awake, standing in the courtyard, waiting for them. As they approached, Su Yu asked, “How is it?”
“It’s exactly as Young Master suspected. Xie Tao did take the money, at least ten thousand taels, and Jiang shi was indeed strangled by someone.” Yuan Xu spoke, his eyes showing disbelief, evidently surprised by the identity of the murderer.
Su Yu nodded in understanding, “I’ve got it. You guys go rest. Yuan Xu, have someone keep an eye on Xie Tao.”
Yuan Xu looked at Su Yu in surprise, “Young Master, are you worried that someone behind the scenes might go after Xie Tao?”
“Yeah, besides that, I want to see if Xie Tao will try to contact the other party.” The enemy was in the shadows, and they were in the light. With Jiang dead, the only clue was Xie Tao. As long as Xie Tao was alive, keeping an eye on him might lead to a breakthrough.
“Yuan Xu, notify Wan Gu and the others. Bring the best few female undercover guards and have them protect Xiao He. Also, arrange the undercover guards for Xiao Bao in advance.” People lurking in the shadows made Su Yu very worried. He feared that those people might suddenly make a move later. Only with people by his side could he feel completely at ease.
“Yes, Young Master, rest assured. I’ll arrange everything. However, Young Madam’s side, Young Master, you need to inform her. Young Madam doesn’t really like having people around her all the time.” Even with Qiuyi and Qiuchan, Wang Jinhe wouldn’t keep someone with her constantly. While Su Yu’s request could be fulfilled, if Madam found out, she might get angry.
Su Yu nodded, “I’ll talk to her. You can bring the guards over.”
Knowing that Wang Jinhe didn’t like it, Su Yu had refrained from assigning bodyguards to the mother and son. But now the situation was different; not assigning guards was no longer an option.
“Yes.”
After discussing the matter, Su Yu asked them to rest, staying in the courtyard to ponder over the situation.
Who would go after Xiao He?
And what could be the motive for targeting Xiao He?
Thinking about these matters, Su Yu found it impossible to sleep. By the time he drifted off, it was already nearly morning.
Upon hearing the sounds outside, Su Yu opened his eyes abruptly, rubbing his temples and getting up.
After breakfast, Wang Jinhe sat beside Su Yu, watching him. Seeing Wang Jinhe’s expression, Su Yu couldn’t help but smile wryly, “Why are you looking at me like that, Xiao He?”
“Last night, you had Yuan Xu and the others go find someone. How did it go?” Wang Jinhe asked, wanting to know if things had unfolded as they suspected.
“It indeed was Xie Tao.”
Upon hearing this, the elders, including Grandpa Wang, turned their attention to Su Yu. Yang Zhenwei furrowed his brow and asked, “Xiao Yu, what’s going on?”
“Jiang did not die naturally; she was strangled. Xie Tao received at least ten thousand taels of silver.” Everyone present was not foolish; upon hearing Su Yu’s words, they understood the situation.
Yang Zhenwei’s gaze shifted to Wang Jinhe beside him, “Xiao He is just an ordinary person. Who would want Xiao He’s life?”
Moreover, this was over four years ago.
At that time, Wang Jinhe didn’t have the capabilities she had now, and the fact that someone still hadn’t let go of her after all this time was simply outrageous.
“I don’t have any clues about this matter, but I’ve had someone keep an eye on Xie Tao. Xiao He, I’ll bring in a group of female undercover guards for you. They’ll follow you, and I’ll even assign guards for Xiao Bao.” Su Yu explained the situation to Wang Jinhe, including the matter of the undercover guards.
Wang Jinhe felt somewhat reluctant. Seeing her reluctance, Su Yu sighed and said, “Xiao He, I know you don’t like having someone follow you, not even in the shadows. But the situation is complicated now, and we haven’t discovered who is behind this. We have to be cautious in dealing with this matter.”
Yang Zhenwei agreed with a nod, “Xiao Yu is right. Since they could take Jiang’s life directly when you sensed something was amiss, it’s evident these people have been around. They might strike at any moment.”
Wang Jinhe knew Su Yu had her best interests at heart and could only reluctantly nod, saying, “Well… okay, I agree.”
