Su Jiu looked at them with amusement. It was just some fruits and vegetables, so why exaggerate so much?
After sending away those friends, a servant at the door reported that Su Qin and his wife had arrived.
With a slightly cold expression, Su Jiu instructed, “Tell them I’ve gone to the palace.”
After saying this, he left for the palace through another door.
Su Qin, along with Yang Shanshan, waited at the door, their expressions gradually becoming impatient. They came to their son’s house, only to be kept waiting—it was simply an affront.
“The Second Young Master’s people in the inner courtyard said the young master went to the palace to see the emperor and isn’t at home.”
“You don’t know if he left or not?”
“There’s another door on the other side of the courtyard, closer to the palace. The young master often uses that one.” The implication was that even if he intentionally avoided them, they wouldn’t have seen him leaving.
“After he returns, tell him to come and see us.”
“Yes.”
After Su Qin and his wife left, Yang Shanshan spoke, “Is he doing this on purpose?”
Why was it so coincidental? They came, and Su Jiu wasn’t at home.
“Even if it’s intentional, we can’t say anything. After all, Xia Jiu went to see the emperor.” Su Qin sighed lightly after casting a glance at Yang Shanshan. “Let’s not trouble them during the New Year.”
Yang Shanshan looked displeased. “What do you mean by troubling them?”
Su Qin remained silent, his head bowed in contemplation.
The emperor, surprised by Su Jiu’s sudden visit, asked, “Why do you have time to come to me today?”
Resting for a day and not going to meet Xiao Yu for a meal together, but coming to the palace to find him—this surprised him a lot.
“Coming here to hide from people, not letting me have peace even during the New Year.” Su Jiu rubbed his temples, feeling annoyed.
Seeing Su Jiu’s impatient look, the emperor guessed who had come to trouble him.
“Haven’t you planned to take action yet?”
“Xiao Yu said he would take action after the New Year. The specifics depend on his intentions.” This time, when Su Yu took action, there might be no room for retaliation.
The emperor teased, “It’s quite unusual for Xiao Yu to take action.”
Su Jiu smiled without saying a word. He didn’t believe that Xiao Yu had just found perfect evidence; he probably had it long ago but hadn’t acted on it.
On the other hand, Su Yu stood by the window, looking outside. As the New Year approached, his mood was not good. If Su Qin and the others hadn’t been causing trouble for Xiao He openly and secretly, he wouldn’t have decided to take action at this time.
Meanwhile, in the far-off Xie Family Village, Xiao Bao had been quite down these days. Xiao Zhi looked at Xiao Bao lying on the table and asked with concern, “Xiao Bao, what’s wrong? Are you okay?”
Xiao Bao shook his head obediently. “Big brother, I’m fine. I just miss daddy. When do you think he’ll come back?”
“God Father said in the letter that he would come after finishing things on his end.” Xiao Zhi explained.
Of course, Xiao Bao knew that Xiao Zhi was right. He just wondered if Daddy would suddenly come back.
Hearing Xiao Bao’s words at the door, Wang Jinhe walked in from outside, reaching out to pick him up.
Suddenly being picked up, Xiao Bao was startled at first, but when he saw it was Wang Jinhe, he felt relieved.
“Mommy.”
“Miss your dad?” The past two days, when the Gu couple returned, Xiao Bao, upon seeing Zhang Qin playing with Xiao Zhi, started missing Su Yu. He had been unenthusiastic about everything, and Wang Jinhe initially thought Xiao Bao would cheer up in a couple of days. However, Xiao Bao remained like this every day.
“Do you think Daddy will come back?”
“When your daddy left, he said he couldn’t come back to celebrate the New Year with us this year. He has a lot of things to do over there. Once he finishes, he will come back quickly. Don’t worry, okay?” Wang Jinhe patiently explained to Xiao Bao.
Xiao Bao reluctantly nodded, “I’ll be good and patient.”
“Xiao Bao is really good. Your daddy must miss you a lot. If you miss him, how about writing him a letter?”
“Okay.”
Hearing that he could write a letter to Su Yu, Xiao Bao was very happy and began to write the letter eagerly.
Seeing Xiao Bao seemingly recovering, Zhang Zhilin finally felt relieved. He had promised his godfather to take good care of Xiao Bao.
Xiao Bao has never had a father since he was little. His godfather found him only last year, and he undoubtedly relies on his father. Seeing his dad come back for the New Year, he must feel somewhat disappointed.
Feeling the concern from Zhang Zhilin, Xiao Bao awkwardly said, “Brother, I made you worry. I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay. As long as Xiao Bao is happy,” Zhang Zhilin kept shaking his head.
After Xiao Bao finished writing the letter, he went to ask Yuan Ji for help in delivering the letter to Su Yu. Then, he followed Zhang Zhilin to collect eggs in the chicken coop.
A while ago, some new chicks hatched at home. After considering it, Wang Jinhe and the family decided to have Big Flower and Small Flower take the chicks and other chickens to the new chicken coop built at the foot of the hill.
This area, recently set up, covers two acres and is intended for chicken farming. Now, with over three hundred hens and more than a hundred roosters, they planned to use this space specifically for chicken breeding. The eggs produced here could be sent to the capital for sale.
At this point, Wang Jinhe still had no idea that the eggs in her hands would soon become in high demand and frequently urged.
Earlier, the last batch of mature vegetables had been sent away, and the vacant land was replanted with vegetables. Although Wang Jinhe didn’t yet know the exact amount earned, she had meticulously kept track of every transaction.
As for the previous fruits and vegetables, Wang Jinhe had calculated that they had sold for around forty-five thousand taels of silver. Considering the income from this winter alone, it amounted to approximately four hundred and fifty thousand taels.
This was the income for just one winter.
Earlier, Su Yu had mentioned in the letter to Wang Jinhe that the fruits and vegetables she planted would be sold at this price in the future. It seemed that Wang Jinhe could consider planting more varieties of vegetables and fruits after the New Year.
Thinking about this, Wang Jinhe began to list the vegetables and fruits she needed to plant. After finishing the list, she realized that the available land was not enough.
Since the land was somewhat insufficient, Wang Jinhe shifted her attention to the slope behind. This was the area that Yu Qingfeng had wanted to buy before, but due to lack of time, it was left unattended. Wang Jinhe decided to approach the village chief to purchase all the slopes in the back.
The next day was the New Year. Wang Jinhe temporarily put this matter aside and, in the morning, the whole family began cleaning the house inside and out.
Since Su Yu wasn’t at home, Wang Jinhe went back to her parents’ home to prepare the New Year’s Eve dinner together.
“Mommy, Daddy brought back gifts for me and brother.”
Wang Jinhe was busy in the kitchen. Upon hearing Xiao Bao’s words, she handed over her tasks to Qiuyi and the others, following Xiao Bao outside to take a look.
Sure enough, when she saw the two large boxes of items, Wang Jinhe couldn’t help but feel helpless. What was this guy thinking? Every time, he sent so many things for the children.
