“It’s better to let things take their course, master. Don’t overthink it,” his subordinate advised.
“I know.”
After returning to the capital, Su Jiu went to Rou Rou’s grave, which was in a beautiful location.
Reaching out to touch the tombstone, Su Jiu felt a mix of emotions. “Rou Rou, I’ve come to see you.”
He visited this place many times every year, and in the past, each visit left him feeling uneasy and upset. This time, however, he experienced a different set of emotions. He even felt unsure about how to face it all.
“Rou Rou, if I were to fall in love with someone else in the future, would you blame me?” It was his failure to protect Rou Rou that led to her untimely death.
“She was a girl who easily captured the attention of others.”
Su Jiu stayed there for a long time, not returning until evening. On the way back, he thought that it was best to let things unfold naturally, and as for the rest, he would figure it out later.
After Su Jiu made a decision, Ming Wanning’s health also improved slightly.
One day, while chatting with Wang Jinhe, Ming Wanning looked at her and asked, “Jinhe, I have a question for you.”
“What is it?” Wang Jinhe asked.
Ming Wanning suddenly felt a bit embarrassed and hesitated for a long time before asking, “Do you know why Mr. Su hasn’t married until now?”
Wang Jinhe was taken aback, looking at Ming Wanning in surprise, as if she hadn’t expected her to ask this question.
“What’s wrong? Can’t I ask this question?” Ming Wanning felt a bit embarrassed, thinking she might have asked something she shouldn’t have.
Wang Jinhe, seeing Ming Wanning’s bewildered expression, knew that she might have misunderstood.
“It’s not that you can’t ask, it’s just that I’m not sure if I should say. I’ll go ask Su Yu,” Wang Jinhe said.
“Okay.”
Wang Jinhe went to the study to find Su Yu. “Su Yu, Ming Wanning asked me about big brother. Should I tell her?”
“You can tell her.”
“Okay.”
Ming Wanning waited in her room for a while before seeing Wang Jinhe coming over. When she arrived, she looked at Ming Wanning directly.
“Don’t look at me like that, I’ll tell you,” Wang Jinhe said helplessly.
“Big brother had someone he liked before. He was going to bring her home to meet our grandfather and decide to get married. But then, the girl passed away in an accident. That’s why big brother hasn’t married until now.” She didn’t want to go into the specifics of what happened. If they were to develop feelings for each other in the future and be together, it would be better for big brother to tell her himself.
“Ah, I see.”
“What’s wrong?”
“Nothing. Jinhe, do you think I have a chance? I know I definitely can’t compare to someone who has passed away,” Ming Wanning said, feeling a bit disheartened.
Wang Jinhe looked at Ming Wanning in astonishment. “Do you like big brother?”
Ming Wanning nodded, feeling a bit embarrassed. “Yes, I do.”
“To be honest, you do have a chance. Both Su Yu and I feel that big brother treats you differently,” Wang Jinhe said.
Ming Wanning’s eyes lit up. “Really? Do you both really think so?”
Seeing Ming Wanning’s reaction, Wang Jinhe didn’t know what to say for a moment. “Wanning, calm down a bit. But it might still take some time for big brother to let go of the past before he can accept you.”
Ming Wanning smiled and shook her head. “I can wait, and I’m actually more reassured by his approach. If we are truly destined to be together, I should be as happy as you and Prince Yu.”
“You will be.”
Afterward, Ming Wanning asked about Su Jiu, and Wang Jinhe chose to share some details that she could disclose.
After listening, Ming Wanning suddenly felt a pang of sympathy for Su Jiu.
How did he manage to hold on for so long?
“What are you thinking about?” Wang Jinhe asked.
“Nothing, I’m just thinking about how he managed to hold on all these years,” Ming Wanning said, furrowing her brow.
Compared to what Su Jiu and Su Yu had experienced, what she had been through seemed insignificant. “Big brother has a lot of responsibilities, so it’s normal for him to be this way,” Wang Jinhe said.
“You’re right,” Ming Wanning agreed, although she still felt a deep sense of compassion for him.
“Jinhe, did the person he liked pass away because of his mother?” Ming Wanning suddenly asked.
She had heard about the situation with Yang Shanshan and her husband from her father. At the time, she had wondered if Yang Shanshan was mentally ill, as she couldn’t understand how someone without an illness could do such a thing.
Wang Jinhe remained silent, but to Ming Wanning, her silence was confirmation.
“I will be very good to him in the future,” Ming Wanning said earnestly. “I’m not afraid to wait as long as it takes. After all, at my age, waiting a few more years won’t make much of a difference. At worst, I’ll be criticized for not getting married.”
Wang Jinhe felt relieved but also worried. She was concerned that Su Jiu might not be able to let go and might end up hurting Ming Wanning in the end.
“I believe you can do it,” Wang Jinhe said.
“Okay.”
Wang Jinhe expressed her concerns to Su Yu: “Su Yu, do you think big brother can let go?”
“He will.”
So many years had passed, and perhaps big brother still had feelings for Rou Rou, but more than anything, he felt guilty because it was his fault that Rou Rou died. Now, with Ming Wanning’s presence, if big brother truly has feelings for her, he will consider it.
“When we go back this year, there should be a resolution,” Su Yu said.
“Why?” Wang Jinhe asked curiously.
“Big brother, like me, is not the type to dwell on things. He might be conflicted now, but give him some time, and he will figure it out,” Su Yu said. The presence of Ming Wanning was the main reason for his confidence.
Upon hearing this, Wang Jinhe felt completely reassured.
“Know that you say that, I feel relieved,” she said.
“It’s late, let’s go to sleep,” Su Yu said.
“Okay.”
Wang Jinhe soon fell asleep in Su Yu’s arms, while Su Yu stayed awake, thinking about Su Jiu and Rou Rou.
And Ming Wanning.
Turning to look at Wang Jinhe, she kissed her on the cheek, then waved his hand to extinguish the candles in the room before closing his eyes to rest.
After spending a few days with Ming Wanning, Wang Jinhe had to attend to some matters at the cotton fields. She arranged for Su Shanshan to keep Ming Wanning company when she was free.
Wang Jinhe took the workers to the cotton fields and earnestly taught them how to work. After finishing the teaching, she sent someone to the Pan family village to instruct them on the work.
The villagers in the Pan family village, along with several other cotton-growing villages, were very diligent in learning. As ordinary people, they learned while doing the work.
After finishing the work at the cotton fields, it was already the end of July. At this time, the melons in the fields and the fruits in the Hululu village began to ripen one after another.
Wang Jinhe also became busy with the harvest. After Ming Wanning’s health improved, she also joined in to help. Looking at the melons in the fields, Ming Wanning was amazed. “This is the first time I’ve seen so many watermelons. There are really a lot of them.”
“It’s not bad here, there are even more in the other field,” Wang Jinhe replied.
