Now that she had been given the cold shoulder for not being of any help, the old lady felt somewhat disappointed.
“Are you alright, old madam?” the nanny asked with concern.
The old lady shook her head self-deprecatingly. “What could possibly be wrong with me? I can see it now. Her kindness to me depends on what I can offer her. When I can’t meet her needs or help her, I’m just a burden to her.”
It was a pity that she had realized it too late.
With a light sigh, the old lady looked at the nanny beside her and said, “In the future, don’t let her in if she comes again.”
The nanny breathed a sigh of relief. “Yes.”
She could tell that the old lady had truly been heartbroken by madam Yu this time, and it seemed that she wouldn’t be involved with them in the future.
From then on, the old lady no longer interfered in family matters. She spent her days in her garden and had a cat to keep her company, playing with it when she had nothing else to do.
The head of the Ming family soon learned about what had happened with the old lady. He wasn’t surprised by her actions, but that was all there was to it. He couldn’t treat the old lady as well as before, and he assumed the same was true for his other brothers.
As madam Yu finished scolding the family head, the Yu family head approached and asked, “How did it go?”
“That old hag is useless. She can’t control my good second brother at all now. Not only that, she has lost her influence in the Ming family. It’s not easy to make a move against her, so for now, we can only try to salvage what we can,” Madam Yu said, frowning with frustration.
“If we had known earlier that Su Yu was this kind of person, we shouldn’t have allowed Xue’er to do such things,” Madam Yu said. The actions taken by Yu Manxue were agreed upon by the two of them.
Who would have thought that even when his wife was pregnant, the Prince Yu showed no interest in a beauty like her.
The head of the Yu family also deeply regretted it now. If he had known that this would happen, he wouldn’t have let his daughter act recklessly.
But regretting now was of no use.
“If we can’t salvage it, we can only try to keep as much as possible,” he said.
“Alright.”
Meanwhile, Yu Manxue was being held in the dungeon of the Prince Yu’s mansion.
Yu Manxue had never been in such a place before, and after just a few days there, she was starting to feel on the verge of a breakdown.
“Let me out, I want to see the prince,” she pleaded. After being locked up for who knows how many days, Yu Manxue lived in constant fear, afraid that she might be harmed at any moment.
She couldn’t die like this. She hadn’t become the prince’s consort yet, and she hadn’t made the Ming sisters pay the price.
“Dadada.” Footsteps could be heard in the distance, growing closer. Yu Manxue looked overjoyed.
Could it be the prince coming?
She knew the prince wouldn’t be so heartless.
However, as she saw the stranger who appeared in the dungeon, her joy turned to disappointment. She stared at the person and asked, “Who are you? I want to see the prince, not you.”
Nan Qiao looked at Yu Manxue and chuckled softly, “You, wanting to see Brother Yu?”
“I want to see the prince. I am the prince’s consort, I…”
As Yu Manxue spoke, Nan Qiao, seeing her audacity, made a quick hand gesture, and a very cute insect appeared in his hand.
Yu Manxue looked at the insect in Nan Qiao’s hand, her eyes filled with obvious fear. “What… what do you want to do?”
“Do you know what this is?” Nan Qiao looked at Yu Manxue with excitement.
Yu Manxue couldn’t help but feel a little fearful of his enthusiastic demeanor. “I… I don’t know what it is.”
“It’s okay if you don’t know. I can tell you. This is a gu insect. If it gets into your body, it will make you wish for death,” Nan Qiao’s voice carried a sinister tone.
However, Yu Manxue’s skin crawled as she listened. “You dare to do this to me. My prince won’t let you get away with it.”
Nan Qiao had never seen someone so delusional. Did she really think the prince would stand up for her?
The more Nan Qiao looked at her, the more disgusted he felt. So, he directly sent a gu insect into Yu Manxue’s body. As the insect burrowed inside her, Nan Qiao began to make a strange tapping sound. With each tap, Yu Manxue writhed in pain, begging, “Let me go.”
Nan Qiao, seeing Yu Manxue beg so quickly, found it rather disappointing.
Shaking his head in disappointment, he said, “I thought someone like you could at least hold out a little longer. I didn’t expect you to beg for mercy so quickly.”
Nan Qiao played for a while and then left. Yu Manxue’s intense pain gradually subsided, but she now felt fearful of the seemingly cute and friendly young man.
After leaving the dungeon, Nan Qiao didn’t go to the pharmacy but instead went to find Su Yu.
“Brother Yu, that woman in the dungeon is quite bold, don’t you think? Do you think it’s her parents who gave her such courage?” Nan Qiao asked, biting into a piece of fruit.
Su Yu smiled and shook his head. “I don’t know about that.”
“Now that the Yu family is no longer a match for us, when do you plan to wipe them out?” If they hadn’t been playing hide and seek with them, the Yu family would have been a thing of the past long ago.
Su Yu smiled at Nan Qiao. “It’s coming soon.”
Nan Qiao was finally satisfied.
Two days later, the weather suddenly turned cold.
Su Yu looked at the heavy snowfall in the morning and smiled. “Yuan Bao, it’s cold. It’s time to put an end to the Yu family.”
“Yes.”
In just two days, the head of the Yu family and his wife could only try to hold onto the money they had left. Even so, they were left with only a few tens of thousands of silver taels, which was too little for them.
But they were running out of time.
The people who had been targeting them had become even more ruthless and swift, and their possessions kept dwindling.
After realizing that the family couldn’t be saved, the head of the Yu family had no choice but to leave with his wife overnight. As for his concubine and illegitimate children, he didn’t even bother to take care of them.
As for Yu Manxue, who had been locked up, they couldn’t afford to worry about her now.
If they still wanted to save Yu Manxue, they might end up with nothing left in the end, and that wasn’t what they wanted.
Su Yu knew that after the head of the Yu family took only his wife and two legitimate sons with him, there was a hint of irony in his voice as he said, “They sure ran away fast.”
“What about Miss Yu Manxue?”
“Nan Qiao has been using Yu Manxue to raise gu insects recently. Let him handle it,” Nan Qiao’s usual fate for those who raise gu insects wasn’t a good one, so Su Yu wasn’t concerned about it.
Yuan Bao silently watched Su Yu. Was the young master being too indulgent with Nan Qiao?
“Do you really not need to restrain Nan Qiao a little?” Yuan Bao hesitated for a moment before asking.
“No, Nan Qiao knows what he’s doing. He’s aware,” Su Yu replied.
Yuan Bao sighed softly. Nan Qiao might know what he was doing, but whether he was fully aware was another matter. After all, Nan Qiao only knew how to behave in front of the young master.
