Su Xi looked at the two children, smiling gently. The group gathered together to study which parent the children resembled more. It seemed that their voices had disturbed the babies, as both of them opened their eyes and looked at the group. After a brief look around, the two little ones touched hands and fell back asleep.
“They are so well-behaved, just like Xiao Bao when he was little. He hardly ever cry or fuss, only when he is hungry or need a diaper change,” Gu Jiuning said with a smile.
All three of Jinhe’s children were blessings, while the mischievous one in their family was there to demand his dues.
“Let’s all go out and let the little ones sleep. It’s not good for Jinhe if we stay here, she’s been tired for so long and needs to rest,” Su Xi spoke up.
“Su Xi is right. We can see the children anytime, there’s no need to rush,” Gu Jiuning agreed.
After the others left, Su Yu carried Wang Jinhe back to the room.
“The chicken soup in the kitchen is ready to be served,” Qiu Yi said from the doorway.
“Please bring a bowl over,” Su Yu replied.
Qiu Yi quickly brought a bowl of chicken soup, complete with a chicken leg, to the room.
Su Yu brought the soup into the room and instructed the servants to rest.
“Jinhe, have some food before you sleep,” Su Yu said, seeing how exhausted Wang Jinhe looked, as if she could fall asleep at any moment.
Struggling to stay awake, Wang Jinhe ate the chicken soup and the chicken leg before lying down and falling asleep.
Sitting by the bedside, Su Yu looked at Wang Jinhe’s weary face and felt a pang of heartache. He reached out, touched her face, and after a while, he leaned down and kissed her on the cheek. “You’ve worked hard.”
In the morning, Wang Jinhe was awakened by Xiao Bao and Xiao Zhi.
As she opened her eyes and looked at the children gathered around the small bed, Wang Jinhe couldn’t help but feel helpless. “Xiao Bao, what are you all doing?”
“We’re looking at our little brother and sister. Did we wake you up, Mommy?” Xiao Bao asked, feeling a bit embarrassed when he saw Wang Jinhe awake.
“No, I woke up on my own,” Wang Jinhe replied.
Excited, Xiao Bao ran to Wang Jinhe’s side and said, “Mother, the little brother and sister are so cute. I really like them.”
“Is that so? Then will you help me take care of them in the future, Xiao Bao?”
“Yes, I’ll help with my brother and sister, along with my older siblings,” he replied. He had helped take care of Hong Yi before, so taking care of his younger siblings wouldn’t be a problem.
Wang Jinhe leaned back on the bed, watching the children talk and interact with each other, a smile in her eyes.
During this time, she couldn’t go out, but having the children around to keep her company helped alleviate her boredom. If it weren’t for the children having a break these days, they would probably be at school by now.
Su Yu came in with some food and shook his head in amusement as he looked at the children. “You’ve been watching since early morning. Aren’t you tired of it yet?”
“Xiao Bao, it’s time for you to go and have your meal,” Su Yu said.
“Okay.”
After the children left to eat, Su Yu fed Wang Jinhe. She looked at the tasteless food with a melancholic expression and asked, “How long do I have to eat this?”
“It’s probably going to be about a month, as Mother said,” Su Yu replied.
Wang Jinhe sighed heavily and resigned herself to eating. Fortunately, Su Yu had secretly added spirit spring water to the food, otherwise she might not have been able to eat it.
“Today, the villagers all came over, but I didn’t let them come in to see you,” Su Yu said. The children were still too young, and he had heard from his in-laws that the babies were even smaller than Xiao Bao was when he was born, so they needed to be well taken care of.
Yesterday, Bai Qi and Wan Gu had examined the two babies and said that although they were small, they were very healthy, which gave him some peace of mind.
“Your parents said we’ll celebrate the babies’ one-month and one-hundred-day birthdays, but we won’t have a celebration for the full moon. They said the babies will still be too young at that time,” Su Yu said. Initially, he hadn’t agreed, but upon reflection, he realized that they were right. The babies were too young, and a large gathering might disturb them.
Wang Jinhe didn’t think too much about it. As long as they thought it was okay, it was fine with her.
“You can decide on that. I’ll take a good rest,” she said.
“Alright, rest well.”
In the past, when a child reached three months old, half of the women in the village would come to celebrate the occasion. During the celebration, the women would throw things into a basin. Su shan threw golden peanuts, while others threw either copper coins or silver.
As for Gu Jiuning, she threw in a piece of jade.
The midwife, seeing their actions, became increasingly delighted. All these items were things she could take away, and she felt like she had struck it rich. When the children were born, she had received fifty taels of silver, and now with so many items, she wouldn’t have to worry for the rest of her life.
After the celebration, the midwife left with the items, and only then did Rong Shi and the others have the time to take a good look at the two precious little ones. However, they were only able to look for a short while before Su Yu carried the children back.
After the birth of the children, Wang Jinhe had thought she was prepared for sleepless nights with the babies. However, to her surprise, the two little ones hardly cried at night and only needed to be fed a couple of times before sleeping until morning.
Su Yu had originally planned to hire a wet nurse, but Wang Jinhe had ultimately stopped him. After five or six months of breastfeeding, the babies could start having some solid food and didn’t need to rely solely on breast milk. She also didn’t want another wet nurse for her children, as it made her feel uncomfortable. Since Wang Jinhe didn’t agree, Su Yu naturally didn’t bring up the matter again.
He took care of the children together with Wang Jinhe.
During Wang Jinhe’s postpartum recovery period, Su Yu worried every day. The food was fine, but the issue of bathing and washing hair was a problem that Wang Jinhe couldn’t bear. She looked at him with pitiful eyes every day, and if it weren’t for his strong willpower, he would have given in to Wang Jinhe’s requests without hesitation.
In the blink of an eye, it was time for the babies’ one-month celebration. Although Gu Jiuning requested that Wang Jinhe continue her postpartum recovery for an additional twenty days, she was already able to eat some flavorful food. The restrictions on bathing and washing hair were not as severe.
When the babies turned one month old, Wang Jinhe spent a long time in the bathroom before coming out. After coming out, she kept smelling herself as if she thought there was a strange smell on her body.
“What’s the difference after smelling yourself for so long?” Su Yu asked.
“I feel like I’ve been stinking for this whole month,” Wang Jinhe said with a hint of sorrow.
She felt repulsed by herself, but Xiao Bao and Su Yu didn’t mind at all.
“Who said that? The scent on your body is the fragrance of milk. How could that be considered stinky?” Wang Jinhe, just like the two children, carried the pleasant scent of milk. It helped Su Yu sleep better every night and was quite enticing as well.
After the babies turned one month old, Wang Jinhe had Su Yu take the children out to bask in the sun when the sun wasn’t too strong. This helped them absorb vitamin D and prevented jaundice.
Although Su Yu couldn’t understand Wang Jinhe’s approach, he still took the children out to bask in the sun for half an hour every day. During this time, Nan Qiao and the others stayed by the children’s side, keeping a close watch on them.
After school, Xiao Bao and the others would run to Wang Jinhe’s room without doing their homework.
“Mommy, we’re back,” they greeted Wang Jinhe before going to see their little brother and sister.
In just one month, the two children had grown and their little faces had become even more delicate and beautiful.
