“Young Master, these watermelons are so heavy! Just 500 of them weigh 7,000 catties,” Yuanbao remarked, wondering how the Madam managed to grow them.
“Alright, I understand. Once you go, come back immediately. I have something else to instruct you to do,” Su Yu looked at Yuanbao and said, “Also, leave a few for Yuanfeng and the others, and tell them not to eat them all by themselves.”
“Got it.”
Seeing that there were no more instructions from Su Yu, Yuanbao left with the items.
“Daddy, why is he called ‘Yuanbao’? Does he like gold ingots?” Xiao Bao asked Su Yu with great curiosity.
Su Yu nodded with a smile, “Yes, when he has free time, he likes to count money. He only counts copper coins, not silver bills or anything else. I don’t know what’s so auspicious about copper coins.”
As they spoke, Su Yu took out 700 taels of silver and handed it to Wang Jinhe. Wang Jinhe didn’t hesitate at all and immediately gave 100 taels to the Gu family, 100 taels to Grandma Wang, and 100 taels to Wang Jingyu. He was left with only 400 taels for herself.
“Now you’ve got nothing left,” Su Yu teased.
“What does it matter? We’re all family; there’s no need to make a fuss. Is there something you’re unhappy about?” Wang Jinhe looked at Su Yu with displeasure.
“Of course not.”
“Brother, when you go back to the academy this time, why don’t you bring a watermelon to share with your classmates?” Wang Jinhe looked at Wang Jingyu and suggested.
She had heard her brother mention a few times that his relationship with his classmates was very good this time. Sometimes, they would even treat each other to meals. Every time Wang Jingyu wanted to treat them, they would make all sorts of excuses, claiming they had other engagements and not allowing Wang Jingyu to pay for anything.
“Sure, little sister, could you also make some of your jerky for me to bring along, and those marinated eggs you made before?” Wang Jingyu thought that since he was planning to treat everyone to watermelon, he might as well bring some more food to share.
Every time he claimed to have money, they didn’t believe him and thought it was all money he earned from copying books.
“That’s not a problem.”
“What’s marinated eggs?” Su Yu asked curiously, as he had never tried them before.
“You’ll find out what they are when I make them later. They’re quite tasty; you can have a few,” Wang Jinhe replied with a smile. She knew that Su Yu liked eggs, but she had never made marinated eggs for him before.
Su Yu nodded with a smile, “Alright.”
After washing the eggs clean, Wang Jinhe boiled them before marinating them. About an hour later, all the eggs were ready. Wang Jinhe gave one to Su Yu first, saying, “Try the taste; this is marinated eggs.”
After tasting it, Su Yu found it delicious. “The taste is really good.”
“If you like it, I’ll make more for you in the future,” Wang Jinhe said, thinking that she could prepare some tasty food for him when he was in a bad mood.
“Okay.”
“Mom, I’m going back this afternoon.”
“Let’s go together then. Su Yu’s carriage is here, and I need to buy some things in town. It’s also convenient to drop your brother off at the academy,” Wang Jinhe suggested.
“Okay.”
Wang Jingyu carried bags and packages of items back with him. People who had a good relationship with him saw him carrying so many things and quickly came over to help. “What did you bring? It’s so heavy.”
“I brought some watermelons that my sister grew. I brought two for you all and two for the teachers. I also brought some jerky and marinated eggs that my sister made,” Wang Jingyu said with a smile.
Originally, he only intended to bring one watermelon, but since there was a carriage available, he decided to bring a few more and thank the teachers for their care.
“Your family also grows watermelons? How big is one of these? They’re so heavy,” one of the helpers asked out of curiosity.
“One of them is over ten catties,” Wang Jingyu casually replied.
“We trust you, huh? Over ten catties for one? Why didn’t you just say it’s twenty catties?” They responded skeptically.
Wang Jingyu innocently looked at them, wondering why no one believed the truth these days.
However, when they returned to their place and took out the watermelons, they were shocked. “Is this… is this really watermelon?”
“Of course, what else could it be? Call everyone else over; I’ll go ahead and bring the watermelons to the teachers,” Wang Jingyu told them.
“No problem, I’ll go right away.” Such big watermelons must be delicious, right?
Wang Jingyu carried the two watermelons to the teachers and said, “Teachers.”
“Jingyu, you’re back? What are you carrying?” They saw something that looked like watermelons, but watermelons weren’t usually this large.
“These are watermelons grown by my sister. I brought two for you all. They’re too big to carry, so I thought I’d trouble you all to share them,” Wang Jingyu said apologetically.
The teachers were astonished as they looked at the watermelons in Wang Jingyu’s hands. “Is this really watermelon? And such huge watermelons?”
“Yeah, the ones in the field are all this big. My sister says it might be a new variety. These watermelons taste really good. Teachers, you should all give them a try,” Wang Jingyu said with a smile.
The teacher looked at Wang Jingyu and said, “Why did you bring this to us? It would be better to sell them at home, wouldn’t it?”
“Besides, have we never eaten watermelon before?”
“Teachers, you’ve definitely eaten watermelon, but you’ve probably never had such large ones,” Wang Jingyu replied with a smile.
The teachers couldn’t help but laugh at Wang Jingyu’s words, and one of them playfully patted him on the back. “You little rascal.”
“I’ll be heading back now, Teachers.”
“Alright, go ahead.”
After Wang Jingyu left, the teacher looked at the two large watermelons in the room and called the other teachers over to share them. It was too much for him to eat such big watermelons all by himself.
When Wang Jingyu returned to where he was staying, his friends who had a good relationship with him were all waiting eagerly. One of them said, “Jingyu, why have you been gone for so long? If you don’t come back soon, I’ll have to start munching on watermelon rinds.”
“Yeah, Jingyu, your watermelon is enormous.”
“Hurry up and find a knife to cut the watermelon.”
Someone nearby grabbed a knife and sliced the watermelon open, and as soon as it was cut, the aroma filled the air.
One watermelon is more than enough for everyone.
“Let’s save one for later; this one should be plenty for us,” the person beside quickly suggested.
“Isn’t that right? The color and the taste, they’re making my mouth water,” someone said eagerly, taking a bite, “Mmm, so delicious.”
“Absolutely delicious.”
Wang Jingyu took a slice of watermelon and began eating. He watched them enjoy the treat, a smile on his face.
After enjoying the watermelon, someone couldn’t help but say, “Oh, Jingyu, didn’t you bring some jerky and other snacks? We should definitely taste those too.”
“Bring them out quickly.”
Wang Jingyu took out the marinated eggs and jerky, and everyone shared them.
“These eggs taste different from what I usually eat; they don’t have that fishy taste. How did your sister make them? They’re so delicious!” someone remarked after taking a bite.
“Yeah, the flavor is absolutely exceptional.”
