“Don’t try to claim relationships with me. I don’t have a mother like you. This was given to me by Brother Yu. Trying to snatch it from me? Who do you think you are?” Nan Qiao said bluntly.
With that statement, Nan Qiao trampled Yu Yan’s dignity into the ground.
The county magistrate could see that Nan Qiao and the woman had a strained relationship, to the point of being quite hostile.
“Madam, your words are inappropriate. This is the compensation you gave to the Prince. He can give it to whomever he wishes. What right do you have to take money from someone else’s hands? It’s truly shameless of you.”
Nan Qiao kept nodding beside them, “When you were arrogantly destroying things, it didn’t matter to you, did it? Why are you acting timid now?”
“Nan Qiao, you…”
“Since you feel the pain of losing this money, you shouldn’t have resorted to destroying the clinic. Now that you regret it, isn’t that just being foolish?” Nan Qiao said, shaking his head.
He didn’t mince words but directed them straight at her.
Yu Yan was trembling with anger, feeling a profound sense of powerlessness for the first time in Nan Qiao’s presence.
“Nan Qiao, you better never set foot in the Nanjiang again.”
She was determined to make Nan Qiao pay the price for his actions today.
Rather than getting angry, Nan Qiao seemed unusually pleased.
“Is that so? Well, let’s wait and see who ends up on the losing side in the end.”
“Huang Qi’s clinic will be closed for a few days. Use the medicinal herbs that are still usable. Dispose of the ones that are not, and arrange for a fresh supply of herbs to be delivered afterward.”
“Understood.”
“Now that the matter is resolved, I will take my leave. Feel free to reach out if you need anything further,” the county magistrate said, preparing to depart as there were still tasks to attend to at the office.
Su Yu nodded, “You may go.”
After the county magistrate left, Su Yu looked at Yu Yan, “You’re not leaving? Do you intend to stay here?”
With a grim expression, Yu Yan departed with her guards.
She had lost more face today than in the past few decades combined.
She wouldn’t let this go easily.
There would be consequences for those involved.
“It seems like I’ve completely offended them, Brother Yu,” Nan Qiao said innocently.
Glancing at Nan Qiao, Su Yu remarked, “Be a bit more confident and drop the pretense.”
Nan Qiao chuckled, “I find joy in her displeasure.”
“She really embarrassed herself today.”
“As long as you’re happy.”
“Let’s head back.”
As they returned, Nan Qiao bought some pig trotters and spare ribs.
“I feel like having braised pig trotters and soy sauce spare ribs.”
“Bring them back for cooking.” Su Yu was willing to fulfill Nan Qiao’s simple request.
Nan Qiao happily followed Su Yu back.
Upon returning home, Nan Qiao took the ingredients to the kitchen and instructed the cooks to prepare the braised pig trotters and soy sauce spare ribs.
“How did it go?”
“She had to pay over fifty thousand taels. I distributed the money to Nan Qiao and his group. When Nan Qiao received the money that I gave him, she seemed tempted to grab it back.”
Wang Jinhe looked at Su Yu incredulously, “Did she actually try to snatch Nan Qiao’s silver notes?”
To Wang Jinhe, over ten thousand taels was not a significant sum.
If she stooped to grabbing such a small amount, it hinted at Yu Yan’s lackluster status in the Nanjiang.
“Is she in need of money?” Wang Jinhe asked Nan Qiao.
“She’s not in need, but she doesn’t have as much as Brother Yu. His wealth is inexhaustible, and he even shares profits with us annually. He probably has more money than Yu Yan’s whole family,” Nan Qiao replied.
“I have more money than her.”
“No wonder she wanted over ten thousand taels,” Wang Jinhe nodded in understanding, now realizing the reason behind it.
She seems quite pitiful.
Nan Qiao innocently looked at Wang Jinhe, feeling like his sister-in-law had misunderstood something.
Without delving into explanations, Nan Qiao chuckled and said, “She will definitely be too upset to sleep tonight.”
After all, Yu Yan had lost a considerable amount of face today, especially since Nan Qiao witnessed it firsthand, making her even more uncomfortable.
Just thinking about it makes me feel really good.
“That’s good.”
After leaving the clinic, Yu Yan took quite some time to find someone to tend to her injured hand.
The guards nearby were now hesitant to approach Yu Yan, fearing she might vent her anger on them. They certainly didn’t want to become the target of her frustration.
Upon returning to her residence, Yu Yan coldly instructed, “Investigate Nan Qiao’s activities in Xuan Empire over the years and also look into the matters concerning the Forget Sorrow City.”
“Understood.”
The guards went out to carry out their tasks, leaving Yu Yan alone in her room.
Rubbing her still-sore arm, Yu Yan’s eyes gleamed with cold determination.
She underestimated Nan Qiao’s audacity to actually lay hands on her. It seemed that having Su Yu by his side gave him a lot of courage.
Gazing down at her hand, Yu Yan’s eyes held a resolute gaze. Since Nan Qiao chose to be ruthless, she wouldn’t hesitate to reciprocate.
Recalling the words of the Nanjiang King about Nan Qiao, Yu Yan furrowed her brow.
It appeared he had known for a while how Nan Qiao had evolved into the person he was now.
Yu Yan also realized that Nan Qiao had never been interested in the throne from the start.
At that time, the Nanjiang King’s expression seemed somewhat peculiar, but she didn’t dwell on it much.
Now, it appeared that the Nanjiang King had long known how things would unfold.
He had been waiting for her to come and stir up trouble with Nan Qiao.
By doing so, she could provoke Nan Qiao, leading him to take over the Nanjiang.
Her hands clenched involuntarily; she had been manipulated by the Nanjiang King.
He had calculated against her for the sake of Nan Qiao.
What a cunning uncle indeed.
Yu Yan’s eyes carried a strong sense of irony.
Some situations can perhaps be exploited.
She wondered if Nan Qiao would still maintain a good relationship with the Nanjiang King once he knew the truth.
Since she was going back, she resolved to send him a significant gift upon his return.
With these thoughts, Yu Yan’s mood finally improved somewhat.
As Yu Yan investigated Nan Qiao, it didn’t take long for Su Yu to find out.
“Master, Yu Yan is beginning to investigate Nan Qiao. Should we take direct action?” Yuan Bao asked Su Yu.
After some consideration, Su Yu shook his head and said, “It’s not necessary. Let her investigate. I’m curious to see what she can uncover.”
“Understood.”
Despite the significant amount of time Yu Yan’s guards spent investigating, they had yet to find any substantial leads.
This made Yu Yan start to doubt Nan Qiao.
“After all these days of investigation, how is it possible that you haven’t uncovered anything about his associates or actions?” Yu Yan refused to accept that her people were incapable.
“It’s likely that someone from Young Master Su’s side is helping him conceal information. Given the strong relationship between Young Master Su and the young Prince, it’s quite simple and easy for them to keep us in the dark,” the guard explained.
Frowning at those around her, Yu Yan asked coldly, “Are you suggesting that Su Yu is helping him?”
“Yes.” Judging from previous events, it was evident that prince Su Yu held a deep affection for Young prince Nan Qiao.
If the Madam continued in this manner, hoping to obtain anything from Young Prince, it would only amount to a futile endeavor.
