Upon entering the house, Su Xi noticed the lush vegetables in the courtyard.
“What are these, Xiao Bao?” he asked.
“These are vegetables that Grandma and Mom planted. Mom has even grown some strawberries,” Xiao Bao replied proudly. “Mom said we’ll have strawberries to eat next year.”
Su Xi smiled at his grandson. “From now on, if you want to eat something, just tell Grandpa, and I’ll buy it for you.”
“No, Dad said he has money, and he can buy me anything I want,” Xiao Bao said with a cheerful smile.
Seeing Xiao Bao’s adorable expression, Su Xi couldn’t help but want to spoil him. But he was content to see his grandson so happy.
“Do you like your dad, Xiao Bao?”
“I like him a lot; Dad is really nice,” Xiao Bao replied earnestly.
Su Xi was momentarily taken aback and then couldn’t help but laugh.
Seeing Su Yu returning with a smile, Grandma Wang said, “Su Yu, you’re back.”
“Grandma, this is my grandfather. He came to attend the wedding,” Su Yu introduced his grandfather with a serious tone.
“Welcome, elder brother, to our home,” Grandma Wang warmly greeted Su Xi.
Su Xi approached and nodded, saying, “Thank you.”
Looking around, he noticed that the house only had Grandma Wang. This raised his curiosity. “Grandma, where did Dad, Mom, and Grandpa go?”
“This time, Jingyu brought some classmates back, and they love to eat the watermelons from our farm. Wang Dagui and his wife went over to the fields,” Grandma Wang explained.
Su Xi’s eyes sparkled with interest. “Is that so? Su Yu, let’s go and have a look.”
“Alright,” Su Yu agreed.
“Master, I believe there are quite a few ripe watermelons now. They’ve been in high demand in the capital,” Yuan Bao suddenly spoke up.
“Let’s check it out. When Xiao He returns, we’ll ask her. If there are plenty of ripe ones, we can pick them and send them over.”
The group, along with Xiao Bao, headed towards the fields. Su Yu approached Wang Jingyu and greeted him, “Jingyu, are you taking a day off today?”
Wang Jingyu responded, “Yes, you’re back? How are things at home? Everything’s fine, I hope?”
Su Yu assured him, “There’s nothing major to worry about.”
Seeing the people from the other side coming over, someone inquired curiously, “Is this your brother-in-law, Jingyu?”
Wang Jingyu nodded, saying, “Yes, he’s also the one who bought the melons from our family. These are my classmates; I brought them here to pick some.”
Su Yu nonchalantly said, “No problem, you can pick as many as you want.” He didn’t mind selling a bit less for a good cause; it was no big deal.
The people standing by exchanged glances, surprised that a brother-in-law was buying melons from his own family. The Wang family seemed to have a unique way of doing things.
“Aren’t you all one family? Is it normal for your brother-in-law to buy the melons this way?” They couldn’t help but find it peculiar.
“My sister says that being a family is one thing, but business is another. I don’t quite understand their reasoning,” Wang Jingyu explained, shrugging helplessly. He had never quite grasped the dynamics between his sister and brother-in-law.
Su Yu didn’t offer an explanation but Su Xi on the other hand expressed his surprise at the quality of the melons. “These melons are growing so well. When you buy from your Xiao He, you shouldn’t let her be at a disadvantage.”
Su Yu, rolling his eyes unceremoniously, replied, “Xiao He is quite shrewd. She wouldn’t let herself be at a disadvantage, would she?”
“Su Yu, you came back just to badmouth me?” Wang Jinghe came down from the hill with a melon in hand, planning to pick a few to take home. However, she unexpectedly found a gathering of people and heard Su Yu speaking ill of him.
Su Yu walked over and casually took the basket from Wang Jingyu’s back, saying, “I didn’t badmouth you. I just spoke the truth.”
Narrowing her eyes at Su Yu, Wang Jingyu warned, “Are you trying to get beaten up?”
Su Yu immediately shook his head, saying, “I don’t want to.”
Watching the intimate interaction between Su Yu and Wang Jingyu, one of Wang Jingyu’s friends kept his eyes on Su Yu. He furrowed his brow, feeling like he’d seen this person somewhere before, as if they’d crossed paths in the past.
“Have you finished picking the melons? If you’re done, you can head home,” Wang Jingyu asked.
“We just arrived and were about to start picking. This is my grandpa, and Grandpa, this is Wang Jinghe,” Su Yu introduced Su Xi to Wang Jinghe while holding the basket.
Wang Jinghe glanced at the elderly man holding Xiao Bao, momentarily taken aback. She hadn’t expected Xiao Bao to accept Su Yu’s grandpa so quickly.
“Hello, Grandfather Su.”
“Hello, but you shouldn’t call me Grandpa Su. You should just call me Grandfather,” the old man said seriously.
Wang Jingyu chuckled at Su Xi’s earnestness. “Grandfather.”
“That’s more like it.”
“Jingyu, your brother-in-law doesn’t seem like an ordinary person,” the friend who found Su Yu familiar whispered to Wang Jingyu.
Wang Jingyu shook his head. “I’m not entirely sure. We didn’t ask, and he didn’t say much. All we know is that his family is from the Capital.”
“Capital? Surnamed Su.”
Suddenly, he seemed to realize something and looked at Su Yu in disbelief.
It’s him.
“Jingyu, I remember who your brother-in-law is.”
“Qin Lang, you know my brother-in-law?” Wang Jingyu asked curiously.
Qin Lang shook his head. “I don’t know him, but I just remembered who he is. Six years ago, there was a young man, only fourteen years old, who became a top scholar with outstanding scores. However, what surprised everyone was that after becoming a top scholar, he never participated in the imperial examinations again. Instead, he went into business. This person should be your brother-in-law, Su Yu, without a doubt.”
Wang Jingyu looked at Su Yu in amazement. “He’s that talented?”
Considering Su Yu’s usual behavior, he didn’t seem like someone extremely talented.
Wang Jinghe listened to their conversation and suddenly remembered that Su Yu had mentioned not wanting to continue his studies after passing the top scholar examination.
“How on earth did you think back then? With such excellent results, you decided not to continue, and your grandpa and the others didn’t scold you?” Wang Jinghe asked curiously.
A fourteen-year-old top scholar, even as the first-place scholar, should be quite extraordinary.
Su Yu thought seriously for a moment and replied, “I wanted to go into business, so I didn’t want to continue studying. Grandpa was angry, but there was nothing he could do about it.”
Once he had made up his mind, no matter what anyone said, it wouldn’t change his decision. And when it came to this topic, Su Xi became furious. He grabbed Su Yu’s ear and scolded him, “You little brat, how dare you talk about it? Do you know how close I was to being furious back then?”
It wasn’t easy for the family to have a potential top scholar, but this kid unilaterally decided to quit without discussing it with anyone. He just ran off.
He ran off without any hesitation. He didn’t give anyone a chance to change his mind.
By the time he returned home, half a year had passed.
“…,” Su Yu reached for his own ear, freeing it from Su Xi’s grasp. “Grandfather, it’s been several years now. Why do you keep bringing up this matter?”
“Don’t bully Daddy, Great-Grandfather,” Xiao Treasure reached out and tugged Su Xi’s hand, then glared at him with an angry expression.
