Chapter 93: Can’t Be Like Your Dad

Su Xi, watching the unhappy look on Xiao Bao’s face, reluctantly let go. Su Yu raised an eyebrow at his son, and it was clear that the little one’s heart ached for his father.

“Xiao Bao, do you like to read books?” Su Xi asked his great-grandson.

Xiao Bao nodded. “I like it.”

“How about we make a deal to study well together in the future?” Su Xi suggested.

Xiao Bao tilted his head and looked at Su Xi. “If I still like it at that time.”

His dad had said that in the future, he could do whatever he wanted.

Su Xi suddenly felt a pang in his heart, giving a stern look to Su Yu and saying, “It’s all your dad’s fault. He’s telling you all these things.”

“Xiao Bao, in the future, let’s not be like your dad, okay? Don’t upset your great-grandfather,” Su Xi said, looking at his great-grandson with a sense of melancholy.

Xiao Bao stared blankly at Su Xi. “But, Dad is really amazing now. Dad says he’s made a lot of money, and he can get me anything I want.”

That’s what Su Yu had told him.

Su Xi looked at Xiao Bao, his face filled with melancholy. What the child said was indeed true. His grandson was making money quite impressively. But making money was one thing, and being obedient was another.

“Great-grandfather, are you okay? You look like you’re upset,” Xiao Bao asked, tilting his head, not fully grasping the adults’ thoughts.

Su Xi replied, “Great-grandfather is not upset, just a little angry.”

Xiao Bao stared at Su Xi, perplexed. “But Dad hasn’t been reading for many years. Great-grandfather, getting angry won’t change anything.”

After all these years, hadn’t Great-grandfather gotten used to it yet? Why did he still look like he wanted to scold Dad? What was the reason?

Li Shu couldn’t help but laugh when he saw Su Xi’s troubled expression. This young master really knew how to tug at the heartstrings.

Su Xi reached out and ruffled Xiao Bao’s hair, making an effort to smile. “You’re right, great-grandfather shouldn’t be angry anymore.”

Indeed, after all these years, no matter how angry he got, it wouldn’t change anything. Su Yu wouldn’t go back to studying again.

Seeing Su Yu’s carefree and do-as-you-please attitude, Su Xi finally understood and accepted it.

“Let’s forget about this matter for good. As long as you’re happy,” Su Xi said to Su Yu.

Su Yu relaxed, relieved that his grandfather wouldn’t bring up the topic again. Otherwise, his ears would be in trouble once more.

“Xiao Bao, you’re truly a lucky charm for Daddy,” Su Yu walked over, pinched Xiao Bao’s cheek, and said cheerfully.

Xiao Bao innocently smiled at Su Yu. No matter what his dad said, as long as his dad was happy, that was enough.

“Let’s go, we’re heading back.” In the meantime, Wang Jinghe had already picked the watermelons.

The group returned home together. Grandpa Wang and Su Xi hit it off, and in no time, they became good friends.

Wang Jinghe watched in astonishment as her granpa and Su Xi chatted. “I really didn’t expect my grandfather to be like this.”

“Well, isn’t it good? After this, my grandfather should stay here for a while. It’s a good thing that they get along,” Su Yu agreed with a nod.

“Xiao Bao mentioned that you’ve been going into the mountains recently?”

“Yes, there’s more wild mushrooms in the mountains lately. I go to pick some and dry them. They’re delicious for making chicken stew in the winter,” Wang Jinghe explained simply.

Su Yu looked at Wang Jinghe and shook his head in disbelief. “We’re not short of money, you know.”

“It’s not about whether we’re short of money or not; it’s about the fact that you can’t buy them during the winter. Besides, in the winter, the variety of vegetables is limited to mostly Chinese cabbage and radishes. There’s hardly anything else…” Wang Jinghe’s eyes held a thoughtful look. Winter is the time when fresh vegetables are scarce, and if she could grow some, they would surely fetch a high price.

“What are you thinking about again?” Su Yu noticed her drifting thoughts and wondered what she was pondering.

“I was thinking about growing vegetables in the winter,” Wang Jinghe shared her idea with Su Yu. He nodded in agreement after listening. “If you can actually do it, we can start our ‘Four Seasons Fruits’ early. I just hope you’ll have enough vegetables by then.”

After all, who wouldn’t want to eat fresh vegetables during the winter if they had the money for it?

He could guarantee that as long as Wang Jinghe could grow them, he could sell them at a good price. That’s how confident he was.

“What’s the big deal? I can just bring the people from the village to help with the cultivation,” Wang Jinghe said nonchalantly.

Su Yu paused for a moment, then smiled and nodded. “You’re right; I totally forgot about that.”

“Mom, hurry up,” they heard Xiao Bao’s voice from up ahead. He couldn’t resist calling out to them.

They both looked at Xiao Bao and smiled, saying, “Okay, we’re coming.”

As they walked over, Xiao Bao started talking to Su Yu, chattering away as if he wanted to share every single thing that had happened recently.

Su Xi wasn’t fond of noisy environments, and if anyone else had been talking like this next to him, he might have given them a stern warning. But since it was Xiao Bao, he couldn’t bear to do so. In fact, he found Xiao Bao’s chattering quite adorable.

Li Shu walked beside Su Xi, watching him with a contented expression, sighing deeply. It seemed that the master was more than content with his grandson.

When they returned home, everyone gathered to chat. The news of Wang Jinghe’s postponed engagement had somehow spread throughout the village, and it became a topic of discussion.

People in the village had various opinions and speculations.

“Weren’t they supposed to get engaged? Why the delay? Could it be that the other party doesn’t want to get engaged to her at all? If that’s the case, it would be a huge loss of face.”

“Who knows? We thought the betrothal gifts would be generous, but it turns out they aren’t.”

As Rong Shi heard people gossiping like this outside, she furrowed her brows slightly. “What are you all talking about again? They just postponed it; it’s not like they’ve canceled the engagement. Furthermore, the postponement was to invite her grandfather from the capital. As for the betrothal gifts you’re so curious about, the engagement day hasn’t even arrived yet. Do you think it’s appropriate to speculate like this?”

If it were anyone else, they might have spoken back without hesitation, but the person in front of them was Rong Shi. Her status as the village chief’s wife made them hesitant to challenge her. No matter what, Rong Shi was someone the village chief protected and respected, so they didn’t dare show her disrespect.

“Who knows if it’s true,” one of them mumbled.

Rong Shi cast a disapproving look at the person. “It seems like you’ve forgotten what happened to the Luo family. Or do you think Su Yu is such an easy person to deal with? Do you really think you can casually insult someone like that?”

Thinking about how Su Yu had acted in the past, everyone felt reluctant to say more. Su Yu had been truly intimidating during that time.

Seeing how they had become so meek, Rong Shi sneered and said, “If you’re afraid, then don’t make up stories about others.”
