Wang Jinhe hesitated for a moment, and upon looking at Su Xi, she immediately understood. She realized that whatever Su Yu planned to do in the future would likely be discussed with Su Xi, and he might have even suggested numerous ideas behind the scenes.
“You really don’t have to, Grandfather,” Wang Jinhé said flatly.
But how could Su Xi accept Wang Jinhé’s refusal?
“Why not? We want to show everyone how important you are to Xiao Yu and that you’re someone they will never be able to meet,” Su Xi thought simply. Since those people had no shame, there was no need to treat them kindly.
The Wang family members sighed in relief upon hearing Su Xi’s words. Su’s idea made sense; this was the only way to prevent others from looking down on Wang Jinhé.
Wang Dagui looked at his daughter and realized that he needed to work hard to prepare enough dowry for her.
Soon, a crowd had gathered outside the Wang residence. When Xie Kui and Rong Shi arrived, they wore mocking expressions. Were they here to celebrate or waiting for Su Yu to provide them with some entertainment?
“Congratulations, Wang Dagui,” Xie Kui said as he walked in and placed a gift on the table.
“Why are you being so polite, Village Chief? You came all this way, yet you’re still so courteous,” Wang Dagui said, getting up to greet them.
“It’s a special day today,” Xie Kui smiled and began speaking.
Wang Dagui was momentarily surprised, but then he started laughing. The village chief was right; today was indeed a special day, his daughter’s special day.
They had waited for about an hour, and since the groom’s party hadn’t arrived yet, the people outside began to grow restless. “Why hasn’t the groom’s party arrived yet? Could they have changed their minds?”
“Yeah, if they really don’t show up, it would be embarrassing.”
“Maybe they want Jinhe to feel embarrassed?”
“If she feels embarrassed, it’s her own fault. Who can blame them when they tried to climb the social ladder? When someone came to propose marriage to their family, they even mentioned the Qiao family. They brought it upon themselves.”
Xie Kang and his wife heard these comments when they arrived, and they were quite displeased. “What time is it? Why are you all in such a hurry?”
“That’s right, it’s not even the appointed time yet, and you’re impatient. You come early and blame them for not showing up on time? What kind of logic is that?”
“If you’re here to watch, you need to have patience. If you lack patience, why did you come? You might as well go home and avoid getting jealous later.”
“Some people are like hens that never lay eggs. After all these years, they still haven’t had a child. Are they trying to make Xie Kang’s line extinct?”
Xie Kang’s wife turned pale and her face became unsightly when she heard these words. Xie Kang’s expression turned cold as he glanced at the speaker. “Why do you need to comment on my wife? Are you a productive hen? The question is, does your husband even consider you worth anything?”
This woman, Jiang, had a knack for causing trouble and picking fights. She could have children, but the problem was that the child was still not treated well. Did she really think she was something special?
She was nothing.
“Xie Kang, I…I’m just looking out for your best interests. If you take a concubine earlier, at least you’ll have an heir. Don’t be ungrateful.” Jiang’s face turned ashen with anger. She couldn’t believe that Xie Kang had said such words.
Xie Kang looked at Jiang with an insincere smile. “Well, I must thank you for your ‘concern.’ When you have time to come and talk about my wife and me, maybe you should think about how to hold onto your husband first. Let’s go, my wife. We don’t need to associate with people like her. She’s just envious of your good life.”
Xie Kang’s wife gave Jiang a withering look and continued to hit her where it hurt. “After you’ve managed your own affairs, come and talk to me.”
Xie Kang gave his wife a thumbs-up. People like this just deserved to be insulted; there was no need to show her any kindness. Did she even deserve any kindness?
After Xie Kang and his wife left, laughter erupted from the crowd nearby. Jiang knew that these people were making fun of her, and their laughter made her feel embarrassed. However, she was willing to accept the embarrassment if it meant witnessing Wang Jinhe’s humiliation.
She was eager to see how Wang Jinhe would react next. With so many people watching, if Wang’s suitor failed to arrive, the Wang family would become the laughingstock of the village.
In her anxious wait, Jiang’s self-satisfaction grew. It’s about time, isn’t it? The person hasn’t even arrived yet, and I want to see what these people have to say later.
Just as Jiang was on the verge of uncontrollable joy, someone finally spoke, “Look over there!”
Jiang instinctively turned her head to see a man on horseback approaching. Her smile froze on her face, and her eyes were filled with disbelief. Could it be that they had really come?
In Jiang’s eyes, there was disbelief. How was this possible?
Upon seeing these people, Su Yu knew what was happening. He led his group to the front gate and gazed at the nine horse-drawn carriages filled with goods. In Jiang’s eyes, her envy was evident.
Even though they hadn’t seen what was inside the boxes, the fact that there were so many large, imposing boxes made it clear that the contents were not mere trash. How could a despicable person and a scandalous woman like her compare?
“There’s so much stuff? Did the Wang family send a shipment? A daughter with a child, and yet they’ve brought so much to seek a marriage proposal?”
“Who knows what’s inside those boxes? Maybe it’s just a bunch of junk. That would be a real joke.”
“Yeah, that’s right.”
The people inside the house heard the commotion outside and came out to see what was happening. When they saw Su Yu arriving with so many things, they were completely dumbfounded.
“So much?”
Everyone turned their attention to Wang Jinhe, making her feel a bit embarrassed under their scrutiny.
“I don’t know what he’s prepared either,” Wang Jinhe said innocently, acting like she had no knowledge of the situation.
While a few people were still talking, Su Yu dismounted from his horse and watched as they spoke seriously. The official matchmaker approached Wang Jinhe, praising her profusely.
As the conversation continued, it was time for the betrothal gifts.
When a long string of valuable items was continually presented, everyone was left in shock.
Jewelry, both elegant and luxurious.
Porcelain, clearly expensive.
Fabrics, beyond the reach of ordinary folks.
Wine, its fragrance spreading for miles when uncorked.
Even the wild geese were nine pairs, symbolizing a long-lasting and prosperous relationship.
While others bought pearls one by one, Su Yu bought pearls by the box.
As they looked at those pearls, Wang Jinhe suddenly remembered when Su Yu had asked her what was the best way to take care of her skin.
She had replied… with pearls.
Staring at those several boxes of pearls, Wang Jinhe’s lips twitched involuntarily. Could it be that he had taken her words to heart?
How much money did this cost?
This guy was too extravagant, wasn’t he?
As they continued to unpack the gifts, Wang Jinhe believed that someone with a weak heart might not be able to handle the grandiosity of it all.
