“If you shout louder, you can scare it away.”
Lin Suisui followed his gaze and saw a pheasant not far away, diligently preening its feathers, completely unaware of the danger approaching.
The chicken didn’t look very fat, rather thin and small, but it should be enough for the two of them to fill their stomachs. Thinking this, Lin Suisui’s motivation surged.
“What are you doing?” Pei Zhiheng couldn’t help but ask, watching her fiddle around on the ground for a long time.
Lin Suisui put her index finger to her lips, making a silencing gesture, and said in a whisper, “Just watch.”
The pheasant was quickly attracted by the scent of the fruit. It tentatively pecked at the outermost fruit several times. After a long while, confirming there was no danger, it swaggered inside.
With a hard tug on the rope, accompanied by a sharp squawk from the pheasant, Lin Suisui quickly ran out, lifted the cage with one hand, and hugged the still struggling chicken, triumphantly saying, “Okay, okay, once you’re in my hands, be good. I’ll give you a quick death.”
Pei Zhiheng stared at her profile and the pitiful chicken in her arms, asking, “Who taught you this method?”
“Taught?” Lin Suisui looked at him in confusion. She was about to say it was basic knowledge, then realized that the person beside her was a prince, accustomed to a life of ease, who wouldn’t need to catch chickens himself. It was naturally different from a child who grew up in the countryside like her.
“Just follow me,” Lin Suisui said. “After your injuries heal, I’ll teach you other things, I guarantee you’ve never done them before.”
She held down the chicken’s wings and legs, then used a knife to gently slit its throat. Blood flowed down her hand, and the small creature struggled a few times in her hand before becoming still.
Lin Suisui skillfully plucked the chicken’s feathers and then used the knife to cut it into almost equally sized halves.
“See, I told you following me wouldn’t be a bad deal? Look, now we have meat to eat, how nice.” She laughed triumphantly, like a child waiting for praise.
There were no lighters in the wild, so Lin Suisui gathered some firewood and started a fire using the friction method.
“Block the wind for me.” Seeing that she couldn’t start a fire after a long time, Lin Suisui decided the wind was too strong.
Pei Zhiheng had somehow found a few stones and knelt beside her: “Let me do it.”
Lin Suisui watched as he rubbed the two stones together, and a flame quickly sprang up. She found it amazing and couldn’t help but ask, “Do people here all start fires like this? Isn’t using a lighter more convenient?”
Suddenly, she bit her tongue hard: She was so stupid. They didn’t have lighters, she was practically revealing her identity!
Fortunately, the lovesick fool was just silently playing with his stones and didn’t pay attention to her words. Lin Suisui breathed a sigh of relief.
But why was it getting dark so early? Lin Suisui glanced at the system time; it was not yet five in the afternoon, but the sky was already approaching dusk.
The buzzing mosquitoes had also increased. In a short while, Lin Suisui had already swatted several, and kindly knocked off those sucking blood on the lovesick fool as well.
“Go, go, this guy’s a lovesick fool, his blood is undrinkable,” she muttered to herself while swatting mosquitoes.
“Here you go.” Pei Zhiheng handed her both halves of the roasted chicken.
Lin Suisui only took one: “When you have food, eat it. A full stomach gives you the strength to fight; it’s better than starving to death here.”
“Brother, look, the smell is coming from there.”
Several burly figures, dressed like bandits, suddenly approached from a distance, each carrying a large knife, looking extremely menacing.
Lin Suisui silently swallowed the chicken in her mouth. At this moment, they would usually either rob money or abduct women, and then the male lead would step forward, heroically saving the beauty.
But she wasn’t the female lead; when would this kind of scene ever involve her?
“Hey, brother, look, this kid dares to glare at you.” One of them, a rat-faced man, tilted his head, immediately noticing Lin Suisui beside him, and grinned, his eyebrows almost meeting: “This young lady is quite pretty, Brother, why don’t we take her back as our wife, and then stew this kid to celebrate with the brothers.”
The leader nodded, and Lin Suisui stood up abruptly, blocking Pei Zhiheng and them.
“Big brothers, please be merciful,” she said, pointing at Pei Zhiheng, then at her own head, and said with a troubled expression, “My brother here has a little problem; he looks at people like this. He really doesn’t mean to offend you.”
“Oh,” the bandits were already rubbing their hands together, “Then we’ll take you back and lock you up, and then stew him.”
Lin Suisui: “…” They really couldn’t understand human language.
“Hey, no,” Lin Suisui had never seen a fight before, and was so scared that cold sweat poured down her back, but she still boldly argued with them: “It’s not that I’m afraid, it’s just that I see that all of you, big brothers, are dashing and experienced, skilled in martial arts. Why would you stoop to bullying someone who is mentally unstable?”
The bandits looked at each other, then burst into laughter.
“We’re bandits, who cares about bullying or not? Brothers, attack!”
Lin Suisui’s legs trembled. Just as she was about to speak again, she was suddenly pulled behind.
Before she could react, Pei Zhiheng had already faced the bandits barehanded. Lin Suisui’s heart leaped into her throat: Ancestor, can you not act cool? Please don’t get hurt!
But the lovesick fool was indeed the number one fighter in the book. In a few moves, he knocked the bandits to the ground, groaning. Lin Suisui couldn’t help but applaud him.
The next second, the man who had just shown off his skills became unsteady, swayed a few times, and spat out a mouthful of blood.
Lin Suisui quickly patted his back gently and handed him the water bottle with hot water: “If you can’t fight, don’t force it. Look, now the wound you just bandaged has opened again.”
