Chapter 87: Separation
Gu Ye’s sudden outburst startled everyone at the dinner table. “Mom, what are you here for?” “If you’re here to see Yu Yu and the children, that’s fine. But what are you doing now? If you’re here to stir up trouble, then finish your meal and get some rest. I’ll take you to the train station tomorrow morning.” Chen Cuijuan was concerned about Yuzo, and Yuzo was concerned about his feelings.
Several times, Chen’s mother and Yu Yu had dodged her with soft but firm responses. But Gu’s mother escalated the situation. She was using her family as an excuse to cause trouble. If he continued to tolerate it, what kind of husband and father would he be? Gu’s mother’s face turned completely dark. She also put her chopsticks down on the table. “Second son, what do you mean? Are you saying I’m here to stir up trouble? Okay, good. I came all this way to see my son and my grandchildren. Was it easy for me? And now you’re resenting me?”
“Yuzo, tell me honestly. How have I treated you since you married into our family? I treat you like my own daughter. I’m just worried that your mom will go back and there won’t be anyone to help you take care of the children, so I said you should come back with me. I can take care of you.” As she spoke, Gu’s mother’s eyes turned red, as if she had suffered a great injustice. Shen Zhiyu pursed her lips. “Mom, you said you were here to see me and the children. Since you came in, have you asked me once how my recovery is going? Do you even know what our children’s names are?”
She said she was here to see Shen Zhiyu and the children. But since she arrived, she hadn’t asked about the children once, nor had she held them. Even Gu Ye’s comrades and the military wives in the neighborhood who came to see the children would give a red envelope, even if it only contained a few cents, just to bring good luck. Gu Ye’s mother came empty-handed, only bringing a change of clothes for herself. Shen Zhiyu pretended not to know.
She didn’t ask when the children were born or if they were full-term. Instead, she was concerned about whether the children’s clothes were all new. Knowing that Gu Ye had never been the favored one since he was a child, Gu Ye also understood. Shen Zhiyu simply pretended to be oblivious, so he wouldn’t feel worse. But who knew, Gu’s mother would take advantage of the situation. She wanted her to go back with her. Other people would immediately bring their wives and children from the countryside as soon as they were assigned a room. Gu’s mother did the opposite. She kept saying that there were two cousins at home who could play with the children.
What was her real intention? Shen Zhiyu felt a chill just thinking about it. Let alone Gu Ye. Shen Zhiyu didn’t know, but Gu Ye knew even better. Because Gu Ye had seen Gu’s mother’s reaction when Huzi and Baozi were born. The first thing she did when she got home was to hold them. His parents didn’t like him very much. He was used to it.
He even told himself that this was how it was for second sons. They say that grandparents love their grandchildren more, but now they don’t even like their own grandchildren. They came here under the guise of seeing the children. Gu’s mother felt both guilty and angry. If she had known Shen Zhiyu was like this, she shouldn’t have let her come along. Her new daughter-in-law had stayed at her parents’ house after getting married. She stayed at her parents’ house for a month and then followed her husband to join the army. She had never stayed at her in-laws’ house for a single day. She didn’t treat her as her mother-in-law at all!
“Second son, Yu Yu, you’re just resenting me for not coming to take care of Yu Yu’s confinement. Besides, how can you say I didn’t care about the children? I’ve been on the train for two days. I’m exhausted.” Shen Zhiyu and Gu Ye didn’t say anything. But Gu’s mother couldn’t hold it in anymore. She came here and realized that her second son had gone astray. He was siding with Shen Zhiyu and Chen Cuijuan. Her chest heaved up and down. She took several deep breaths before suppressing her anger. She had come here for a reason. She couldn’t let it slip away.
Gu’s mother said a few more nice things, and finally got to the point. “By the way, I saw that the children have a lot of clothes. There’s no room to dry them all at home. It’s just taking up space. The children will have even more things when they get older. This is a good opportunity. I’ll bring some back for you. When your sister-in-law gives birth, she can wear them too.” “Oh, there’s not enough room to dry them. And mother-in-law, you don’t know. It might be sunny today, but it rains a lot here. It often rains for half a month straight. Clothes take days to dry.
The babies’ clothes get dirty easily. We need more clothes, how else can we change them?” “It looks like a lot, but it’s not enough.” Gu’s mother was being sarcastic, but Chen Cuijuan didn’t care. But she wasn’t happy about taking her grandchildren’s things and giving them to Gu’s unborn child. She couldn’t let this happen. Once she gave in, the unborn child in Jin Fengyan’s belly would need everything from Tuan Tuan and Yuan Yuan. People would think that those things were rightfully theirs. Gu’s mother’s face stiffened again. This was their Gu family’s business.
Why was Chen Cuijuan interfering? “Mother-in-law, you’re exaggerating.” Gu’s mother said with a forced smile. “Besides, the child in the eldest daughter-in-law’s belly and the second son’s children are the closest cousins. They share the same surname.
They share the same blood. They will need to support each other in the future.” “Support each other? What support?” Chen Cuijuan’s fighting spirit was ignited. Seeing her son-in-law’s tacit approval, she no longer held back. “Mother-in-law, let’s be clear.
I’m not looking down on your eldest son and his wife. But you see, Tuan Tuan and Yuan Yuan’s parents are an officer and a teacher. No matter what happens to the children in the future, they will be city people, right? They won’t have to worry about work. They’ll be workers at the very least! It’s called mutual support, but we all know that it’s really about clinging to a successful son and brother to suck their blood, right?”
Chen Cuijuan’s words had a double meaning.
Not only did she separate Tuan Tuan and Yuan Yuan from Gu’s eldest son’s children, but she also directly pointed out that the entire Gu family was sucking Gu Ye’s blood! Chen Cuijuan’s words hit a sore spot for Gu’s mother. Her face changed drastically.
“What do you mean? Are you saying we’re sucking Gu Ye’s blood? Gu Ye is my son. He’s a piece of my flesh and blood. He, the eldest, and the third are all brothers. Isn’t it natural for brothers to help each other? But you, the clothes you’re wearing were bought with money my son earned. How dare you say that to me?” Shen Zhiyu: “I used my salary to make these clothes for my mom. My mom has been taking care of me and the children for so long. She hasn’t slept a good night. She didn’t bring any clothes for the hot weather when she came. What’s wrong with me making a set of clothes for my mom?”
Gu’s mother: “Your salary, your job, you got them all because of Gu Ye. If it weren’t for our second son, would you be able to join him in the army and become a teacher?” As the two of them argued, their voices rose. Tuan Tuan and Yuan Yuan, who had just fallen asleep, were woken up. They seemed to sense their mother’s emotions and pouted their lips.
They burst into tears. Shen Zhiyu and Chen Cuijuan quickly went to comfort the babies. Gu’s mother wanted to say something. “Enough!” Gu Ye took a deep breath and stood up. “Mom, get some rest. I’ll take you to the station tomorrow.” Gu’s mother: “
Second son, you…” “Or I can take you to the city now.” Gu’s mother didn’t expect Gu Ye, who was always so easygoing, to speak to her like this. It sounded like if she kept arguing, he wouldn’t even let her sleep here tonight. Gu’s mother’s face flushed red with anger. “You ungrateful wretch.” “Fine, I’m an ungrateful wretch. Now that I’m married, according to the regulations of the team, I can live independently after getting married.
Next time I go back, I’ll split the house.”
