Within two days, Carpenter Su had set up the two beds.
Not only did it attract the attention of the whole family, but also many people in the village came to see it.
Most of the houses built in the countryside were low and narrow, and the floors inside were mostly made of rammed adobe. Adding a little water was like adding water to knead dough. Too much water would make it muddy. Even without adding water, a layer of dust needed to be removed.
Most people’s houses were filled to the brim with boxes, pots, shelves, wooden basins, tables, chairs, and benches. There was no provision for storage at all.
Su Qingyu arranged the two beds, lifted the bed boards, stuffed everything into the bed boxes, then covered the bed boards and spread the mats, making the room clean, tidy, and private.
In the small room inside, there was a double-row, five-drawer cabinet against the wall, and all the clothes and small items could be put in it. Then they put a clay vase on the top of the cabinet and inserted flowers picked by the twins from the wild. The whole room looked elegant and beautiful.
The twins didn’t have much to store at all, so Father Su and Mother Su stuffed a lot of things into their room.
As soon as the sliding door of the partition was opened, a small independent space appeared inside. The place connecting the beams was made of hollow partitions, which were breathable and ventilated.
It was the envy of those who came to visit.
Especially families with many children at home were clamoring to make a partition at home, even for a bed with a bed box. In addition to being able to put clothes and quilts, you could even hide food.
Suddenly, Su Mujiang’s orders surged.
Zheng Shi couldn’t keep up her sarcastic words, and she had already been pestering Wang Shi to do the same for Youfù and Youguì. Wang Shi felt that Su Qingyu was meddlesome. Originally, it was not impossible to live like that. Why did she have to meddle? Was money blown in by the wind?
Feng Shi didn’t say much, she was just busy preparing for Su Youwen’s marriage.
As soon as their son would get married, he would be dragged onto the battlefield, his life hanging in the balance. Feng Shi felt both sorrow and bitterness in her heart. She spent her days anxiously watching Su Youwen, afraid of missing even a glance.
Carpenter Su’s family benefited a lot from Su Qingyu’s designs and so gave a complete set of dowry furniture to her.
Mother Su and Father Su were very reluctant to accept it.
But Su Mujiang’s family insisted on giving it. Su Qingyu picked out only a few things that she liked and brought them with her, including clothes hangers, mirror stands, embroidery piers, chests of drawers, buckets for children and grandchildren, wedding stools, and a few other small items.
Old Su didn’t even provide money to make a bridal bed. Despite its large size, Su Qingyu didn’t intend to bring a bed along when she got married, only preparing to bring bedding. Su Youwen, on the other hand, made a new bed and also placed it inside.
In this way, the day came for her to get married.
Since there were weddings in the family, Old Su didn’t think about having a big event on Su Qingyu’s wedding day. He just wanted to prepare a few tables for his family to eat.
According to ancient rituals, they married the girl first and then married a daughter-in-law. Since the time for Su Youwen’s gathering was approaching, Su Youwen’s wedding was scheduled for the day Su Qingyu returned home.
The wedding was so close that Su Qingyu didn’t feel that she couldn’t make it big. But Mother Su kept talking about it for a few days.
The eldest son Su Qingsong was conscripted away before getting married. When her eldest daughter Su Qingliu got married, they didn’t hold a banquet that year. And now they were not holding any banquet when it was Su Qingyu’s turn.
Mother Su felt very unhappy.
Su Qingnao persuaded her for a few days before she felt better.
The day before her wedding, Su Qingyu met Su Qingliu.
She had only been married for two years and was already worn out. At the age of twenty, which was the prime of life, she was already haggard.
Mother Su held her and cried loudly, unable to restrain herself.
Father Su also stood aside and wiped his tears silently. The twins held Su Qingliu’s arms on the left and right, crying and calling for their sister.
Su Qingyu looked at her niece who could neither speak nor walk in Father Su’s arms. She could only cry and reach out to Su Qingliu with sore eyes.
“Let’s go, yí [1]mother’s sister will take you outside to see the flowers.”
Su Qingyu took Yaya from Father Su’s arms, hugged her, and walked out, taking the twins out as well. So that her parents can talk to her sister.
“Qingyu, she’s shy,” Su Qingliu choked out, worried that Su Qingyi wouldn’t be able to handle Yaya.
“It’s okay, sister, you talk to our parents, I’ll take her out for a walk, and if she cries hard, I’ll hold her back.”
She then led the twins and walked out with the baby in her arms.
Yaya cried hard, twisted her body, and stretched out her hands to reach Su Qingliu. Su Qingyu hugged her and quickly ran out of the room.
The twins, one on each side, helped to comfort, and Su Qingyu said, “Qingyang, go get a piece of pastry.”
Xiao Qingyang responded and ran away.
Su Qingnao carried Yaya to the kitchen. While swaying Yaya, she directed Xiao Qingxing to wash the pot and light the fire, preparing to prepare something for Yaya and her sister to eat.
When Xiao Qingyang stretched out the pastry to Yaya, the little thing immediately grabbed it with her little hands, and couldn’t wait to hold it with both hands and put it into her mouth. The crying stopped, and two big tears were hanging on her face.
Su Qingyu felt very distressed.
With no one to help take care of such a big child, Su Qingliu had to tie her on her back when working. The baby was supposed to be white, plump, and tender, but now she was skinny and dark, with not many hairs.
Su Qingyu asked the twins to sit on the bench and hold her and coax her while she got up to cook some batter and two egg yolks for Yaya to eat.
After feeding Yaya, Yaya was already playing well with her yí and jiùjiù.[2]mother’s brother
The twins had never played like this with such a young child before, so they were very excited. Despite not having much strength, they insisted on competing to hold her, stiffly wrapping their arms around Yaya’s waist and lifting her up…
Su Qingyi felt a twinge just looking at it, but Yaya smiled broadly with her two yí and jiùjiù.
Xiao Qingxing hugged her, Xiao Qingyang chased her with the egg yolk and fed her, while Su Qingyu spread her hands to protect her.
It was too hot in the kitchen, so the three siblings decided to take Yaya out to see flowers and scenery.
Su Qingyu took Yaya over, held her in her arms, and walked out the door.
Along the way, Yaya turned her head and looked left and right, saying that this was a flower, that was a tree, a chicken, a duck… The little thing was entertained by her yí and jiùjiù while watching.
“Qingyu…”
Did someone call her?
Su Qingyu turned around and looked.
