When the two sisters finished washing the clothes and returned to Cui’s house, they found that Father Su had already talked to Old Man Cui and Old Lady Cui.
It was like secretly dividing the family. On the surface, the family was still together, but to deal with conscription and taxation, they would not tell anyone.
From Old Man Cui’s eldest son’s family, only the mother and daughter were left. He did not know when he would grow old and confused or when he might pass away. He was afraid that his eldest grandson’s wife and daughter would be treated poorly by his sons and their wives, so he listened to Father Su and divided the family
He also wanted to establish a good relationship. No matter which one of him and Old Lady Cui was left in the future, Su Qingliu would take care of him or her.
Su Qingyu was very satisfied.
She thought that this old man Cui was a sensible person. He and his wife still relied on their sons and daughters-in-law for their old age, so they turned a blind eye to how Su Qingliu was treated. Su Qingyu understood it and so didn’t make a fuss about it.
She also said on behalf of Su Qingliu: “When my business is successful in the future, I will pay my sister a lot of wages, and then let my sister be respectful to you. Now that her parents-in-law are gone, she must provide for you in your old age.”
“That’s right. I think so too. I will also remind her in the future that during festivals, to buy clothes for you to make dresses and shoes, and give you money for your retirement money. She will not withhold a penny of what she should do, don’t worry. Her mother and I will remind her.”
Father Su agreed.
Old man Cui nodded while choking with sobs.
He was old, and first, he sent away his eldest son and daughter-in-law, and then his eldest grandson. Now the two remaining people in the eldest room were also leaving home for the town.
The old man felt very lost.
He just wanted his whole family to be together, even if they had to eat coarse food, he would feel at ease when he saw his entire family under his nose.
He wiped away his tears and hugged Yaya: “Yaya, be good and obedient. Come back to visit your zǔnǎi and zǔyé when you have time.” The old man was reluctant to let go of this only child of the fourth generation.
If the eldest grandson was gone, this would be the only bloodline left by the eldest son.
Yaya might have seen that there were more people at home today, so she jumped excitedly on her zǔyé’s lap, making some humming and oh-oh sounds, but no one knew what she was saying.
Su Qingliu was shocked. What was going on? Just because she did laundry, her father helped her divide the family property!
In the future, she could take care of Yaya and eat on her own? She didn’t have to hand in her earnings? Her sister was going to take her to town? Her sister was going to open a shop?
Who would tell her what happened?
Old lady Cui stood aside, caressing Yaya and crying.
Seeing Su Qingliu in a daze, she came over to pull her and said, “Come back often, come back to see me and your yé. You have to take care of yourself and Yaya when you are alone outside. When Yaya’s father comes back with a letter, I will send your yé to the town to tell you.”
Su Qingliu agreed with her head down and tears fell.
The expressions of the other people in the courtyard changed. The news of Mangzhong’s death hadn’t even come back yet, and her father from her mother’s family was going to take her away? Why did their father agree?
After the family was divided, wouldn’t the money that Su Qingliu earned go into her pocket?
Just as the second daughter-in-law of Old Man Cui was about to speak, Su Qingyu noticed it and gave her a cold look.
“I will let my sister take half of her wages back home until she has paid off her wedding expenses. I will also give Yaya’s zǔyé and zǔnǎi some pension money every year. When the shop is free, I will also let my sister come back to visit.”
“That’s good. That’s good.”
Old Man Cui held Yaya tightly as if he was afraid that she would disappear in the blink of an eye.
Even until Su Qingliu followed them out of the village, she still couldn’t believe it.
Looking back towards the village, the green grass on both sides of the village road suddenly seemed unreal.
“Dad, what did you say to yé and nǎi? Why didn’t my shū and shěn make a fuss?” Su Qingliu asked her father.
Father Su was somewhat pleased with himself; he could not believe that it was going so smoothly.
“Of course, they didn’t make a fuss! But they were just worried about losing your labor force, and they were also worried that the money they borrowed for your wedding would be wasted. So Dad said that he would let you send money back every month and also give the money for your yé and nǎi’ old age. Your yé and nǎi also spoke up for it, and it was settled.”
Seeing her father’s face full of disbelief, Su Qingyu thought that things were going too smoothly and smiled.
“The main reason is that they are having dinner together today, and my sister is the only one missing. Yaya’s zǔyé and zǔnǎi feel guilty in front of my father, and they are afraid that our family will say that his family abused you, and if we make a fuss, it will not look good for his family either.”
Su Qingyu looked at the bag on Su Qingliu’s back and sighed. The mother and daughter only had this bag to carry everything. She hoped that her sister would be happy in the future and raise Yaya to be a little fatter.
It was not until they returned to town and Su Qingliu was settled by Su Qingyu in the backyard of the shop that she truly felt that she had left that home.
She couldn’t help but feel her eyes turning red.
Su Qingyu saw that her sister had turned her back, and after a moment of silence, she took out two taels of silver.
“Sister, take this money and buy some bedding and kitchen supplies. Our biǎodì will come over in a couple of days, and you two can eat in the shop. Dad and I will go to the nearby village to check out the goods.”
Father Su felt a little uncomfortable when looking at the two taels of silver.
This should be the money that he, as a father, gives to settle his eldest daughter, but unfortunately, he was short of money.
“I’ll go with you.”
“No, it’s not convenient for you to take care of Yaya. Let’s just stay in the shop. You can keep an eye on the workers who are decorating. Some things need to be purchased in the backyard, so you can help me buy them. I may have to run around outside these few days, so just buy anything you think is missing, and tell me if you don’t have enough money.”
Su Qingliu nodded in response, and Su Qingyu and Father Su got up and walked out.
Seeing her father and sister leave the shop and disappear, Su Qingliu hugged Yaya and smiled: “Yaya, we will live with your aunt in the town from now on. We will help your yí open a shop and earn money. Are you happy?”
Yaya jumped a few times in her arms, grinning to express her excitement. There were so many people and shops in the town, and the little thing couldn’t see enough.
On the other side, Su Qingyu and her father hired a carriage and went to various villages.
Father Su was very familiar with the villages near the town and took her to visit them one village after another.
After two days of holding it in, he finally couldn’t help asking her, “Daughter, how did you come up with the idea of opening a shop like this? Don’t people go to the market to buy things? There are so many varieties and they are all complete, why would they go to your shop to buy? You charge such a high price for the goods, can you make any money?”
Father Su has been worried since he heard that Su Qingyu was going to open a shop. He was afraid that his child would not be able to make money and would have to rely on her parents-in-law for money. As a parent, he was not able to help her. He was so worried that he could not sleep well.
Su Qingyu thought for a moment and asked him, “Dad, why do you think I can’t make money?”
Father Su was stunned. Although he wanted his daughter to make money, he still helped her analyze the situation.
“Well, think about it. If your purchase price is the same as the selling price at the market, then you must sell it at a higher price than at the market. If you sell it at a higher price, who will buy it from your shop? If no one comes to buy, how can you make money?”
