Chapter 13
Lu Jingzhe looked at her with confusion. The female doctor realized something and immediately took off her mask. With the mask removed, a smiling face was revealed. It was pretty enough, but there was a mole the size of a grain of rice on the corner of her lips, breaking the harmony of her face.
She looked at Lu Jingzhe and said excitedly:
“It’s me, Pu Yue.”
Perhaps the mole was too distinctive, Lu Jingzhe quickly recognized the woman. Compared to the woman’s excitement, he was much calmer, only nodding slightly.
“When did you come back?” Pu Yue stood aside from the doorway, wanting to continue talking to him.
“Just came back.” Lu Jingzhe said.
“Still in the original garrison unit?”
“Yeah, still there.” Lu Jingzhe replied.
Pu Yue seemed to have thought of something, her expression suddenly tense. She asked:
“Are you injured? Why are you in the hospital?”
“No.” Lu Jingzhe’s face was calm and composed. He continued, “It’s a family member who’s sick.”
“Oh.” Pu Yue clearly breathed a sigh of relief after hearing this. Then she asked, “Who’s sick? Is it serious?”
Lu Jingzhe turned to look at Xia Qingning, then said to Pu Yue:
“It’s fine, she just caught a cold yesterday and has a bit of a fever.”
Pu Yue followed Lu Jingzhe’s gaze and saw Xia Qingning, who had already sat up. Although the person in the bed looked a little sick, she was still very beautiful. Her illness added a fragile, pitiful charm to her.
Pu Yue’s eyes dimmed slightly when she saw Xia Qingning, then she said:
“Oh, it’s… her.”
Pu Yue clearly knew Xia Qingning, but she didn’t call her “sister-in-law,” instead using “her” instead, clearly not wanting to acknowledge her status.
Xia Qingning saw Pu Yue looking at her and didn’t shy away. She met her gaze and smiled at her generously.
Pu Yue’s lips curved slightly, responding to Xia Qingning, then turned to Lu Jingzhe and said:
“I’m a doctor here now. If you need anything, just ask.”
“Okay, thank you.” Lu Jingzhe said in a low voice, his tone as cold as always.
“Don’t be so polite with me. We’re so familiar. Don’t forget, we fought side by side on the battlefield back in the army. This revolutionary friendship will never change.” Pu Yue said with a passionate tone.
“Yeah.” Lu Jingzhe responded, then said, “You go ahead.”
“Okay, we’ll chat later.” Pu Yue smiled.
After Lu Jingzhe left, Pu Yue put on her mask and walked into the ward, starting to routinely ask about the patient’s condition and then making notes.
When she walked to Xia Qingning’s side, her eyes lingered on her face for a few seconds, as if scrutinizing her.
“You came last night? Where do you feel uncomfortable?” Pu Yue asked in a flat tone.
Xia Qingning knew she was sizing her up, but she didn’t show any fear. She met her gaze frankly and replied truthfully:
“Yeah, my throat is a little sore, but otherwise I’m fine.”
Pu Yue responded and asked, “How’s your temperature now?”
“I haven’t taken my temperature, I don’t know what it is now.”
“Take it later.”
From Pu Yue’s attitude, Xia Qingning knew she didn’t like her, even with a hint of disdain and hostility.
Comparing her attitude towards herself and Lu Jingzhe, it wasn’t hard to guess that she had feelings for Lu Jingzhe.
Sure enough, the next moment she heard her say:
“You and Lu Jingzhe…” She seemed to want to ask something, but stopped halfway through. After a moment, she said, “Nothing.” Then she turned and walked out of the ward.
Xia Qingning wasn’t surprised. After all, Lu Jingzhe was the male lead. How could he be without women who liked him? But now she was the original wife, and as long as these women didn’t deliberately provoke her, she didn’t think it was a big deal.
After waiting for a while, Xia Qingning’s stomach was growling in protest from hunger. Lu Jingzhe finally came back, carrying an aluminum lunch box in his hand.
He sat down, opened the lunch box, and inside was a bowl of soft noodles with a little sesame oil. The aroma quickly wafted out. In this era, there were no bedside tables in the ward, so Lu Jingzhe had to hold the lunch box and place it in front of Xia Qingning.
Xia Qingning took the chopsticks he handed her. Because her right hand was being used for the IV, she could only use her left hand to hold the chopsticks.
The noodles were slippery, and she was inexperienced with her left hand using chopsticks. She picked them up, but they slipped down. She picked them up again, but they slipped down again. After several attempts, she couldn’t get them into her mouth.
At this moment, a large hand reached out and took the chopsticks from her hand. It skillfully picked up the noodles and fed them to her mouth.
“Open your mouth.” A low voice sounded in her ear.
Xia Qingning was surprised. She didn’t expect Lu Jingzhe to feed her. She looked up at him, only to see him with a cold face, frowning, his expression not gentle at all.
This man was cold to her, yet he was feeding her. He was really going through a lot.
With such a good opportunity to build a closer relationship, Xia Qingning naturally wouldn’t refuse. After politely saying “Thank you,” she opened her mouth to take the noodles he was feeding her.
“Sss…” As soon as the noodles entered her mouth, she gasped in pain.
It was too hot! She wanted to spit it out, but the bowl wasn’t in her hand, so she could only hold it in her mouth, fanning her mouth with her hand. Tears immediately welled up in her eyes.
Lu Jingzhe had never fed anyone before. How could he know to test the temperature? Seeing Xia Qingning’s tearful eyes, she was still trying to endure it. He felt a little guilty and asked:
“Are you okay?”
Xia Qingning finally recovered. Her tongue was tingling with pain. Hearing Lu Jingzhe’s concern, she still forced herself to say through the pain:
“I’m fine.”
She didn’t blame him. The noodles weren’t even smoking, and he didn’t know they would be so hot.
Lu Jingzhe looked at Xia Qingning’s hazy tearful eyes. Even though she was burned like this, she still said she was okay. Her lack of blame deepened Lu Jingzhe’s guilt. He didn’t say anything, but when he picked up a chopstick, he blew on it to cool it down before feeding it to Xia Qingning.
Xia Qingning ate the noodles he fed her, thinking to herself: He still had resentment towards the original body, but he was able to do this. It wasn’t easy.
At this time, Pu Yue walked into the ward with a thermometer.
Taking someone’s temperature was something that could be done by a nurse, but she came herself, simply because there was someone she wanted to see in the ward.
As soon as she entered the ward, she saw a scene that made her sad and unbelievable:
The man who was always calm, composed, and serious, was now feeding a woman, even blowing on the food to cool it down before feeding it to her.
She stared at the two of them, stunned on the spot.
