Chapter 6: Returning to Her Family Home
Shen Yuchu hadn’t driven a few kilometers when she heard Lin Xuan, sitting in the passenger seat, constantly directing, “Right, right!”
“Half a turn, you turned too much! You almost hit the bridge pier.”
Shen Yuchu ignored him and continued driving.
A few seconds later, Lin Xuan spoke again, “Left, turn left a bit.”
Shen Yuchu’s face darkened slightly; she continued driving forward, the car jolting.
From the passenger seat, Lin Xuan said, “Straighten the wheel!”
Shen Yuchu narrowed her eyes.
Lin Xuan frowned, looking ahead, “Shen Yuchu, turn the wheel half a turn to the left.”
Shen Yuchu was about to explode.
“Right, turn right half a turn, you’re off course, Shen Yuchu, how are you even looking at the road? Can’t you see?”
Shen Yuchu gripped the steering wheel tightly, biting her lip. The car jolted again.
“Shen Yuchu, straighten the wheel, straighten it!”
“Shen Yuchu, even my second aunt’s dog has better road sense than you. Turn the wheel 15 degrees to the left.”
“Too much…”
“Ka!” Shen Yuchu slammed on the brakes.
She shifted into neutral, turned off the engine, straightened the wheel, glared at Lin Xuan, and raised her hand to hit him.
“Turn left, turn right!”
“Turn left, turn right!”
“Turn! Turn! Turn!!!”
Lin Xuan raised his hand to shield his face, but his forehead still took a few blows.
Lin Xuan stared at her with his handsome, double-lidded eyes.
Shen Yuchu angrily unfastened her seatbelt, “I know how to drive, I don’t need your directions.”
Lin Xuan, rubbing his brow from the blows, said, “I was just telling you how to steer! Why did you hit me? Look at how you were driving just now, you almost ran into the bridge pier! That’s dangerous.”
“I told you to turn 15 degrees to the left, you went way off course, you were at least 45 degrees off!”
“Shen Yuchu, you even messed up driving in a straight line. Luckily this is a country road, if it were in the city…”
Shen Yuchu got out of the car, went around to the passenger side, and said, “You drive!”
Lin Xuan got out, seeing Shen Yuchu’s still-fuming expression, swallowed the words he wanted to say.
After he got into the driver’s seat, before even starting the car, Shen Yuchu started mimicking his tone, “Turn left, turn left a full turn.”
Lin Xuan: “Huh?”
Shen Yuchu’s eyes flickered, then she continued, “Right, turn 15 degrees to the right.”
“Lin Xuan, are you blind? My second aunt’s dog has better road sense than you.”
Lin Xuan: “…Huh?”
Shen Yuchu rolled her eyes, “Drive! What are you looking at me for?”
Lin Xuan didn’t speak, restarted the car, and as soon as they started moving, Shen Yuchu said, “Are you blind? You’re off course! Can’t you see? Where are you going? There’s a river on the left!”
Lin Xuan: …He was driving perfectly fine, why did she suddenly say that?
Besides…he wasn’t even driving towards the river?!
“Can’t you drive? Are your eyes glued to your butt? Do you even know which way is north, south, east, and west?”
Lin Xuan: …
His face turned ashen, he snorted in his nose, ignoring Shen Yuchu in the passenger seat.
The car bumped along the dirt road.
“There’s a ditch over there, can’t you see? You’re worse than my second aunt’s dog! Where are your eyes?”
Lin Xuan was fuming, his handsome face growing darker and darker.
“Are you trying to die? There’s a rock, and you drove right over it! Can’t you drive? What terrible technique!”
“What are you showing off for? Look at the road, not me!”
…
Finally, Lin Xuan pulled over, exasperated.
He closed his eyes, calming himself for a while before turning to Shen Yuchu, “Shen Yuchu, I’m sorry! I apologize for the way I directed you from the passenger seat while you were driving.”
Shen Yuchu looked at his expression, the suppressed anger making his chest rise and fall rapidly. Yet, he was still apologizing.
She lowered her head and picked at her fingernails, “Hmm, there’s still hope!”
Lin Xuan looked at her, “From now on, please don’t give me directions, okay? I know how to drive, I have my own feel for it. Don’t try to direct me from your perspective and angle, okay?”
Shen Yuchu finished picking at her nails and slowly raised her eyes, “Right, dear Mr. Lin Xuan, those are my sentiments as well.”
Lin Xuan: …
Shen Chunfen, Lin Hui, and Mrs. Wu, sitting in the back, remained silent.
Lin Xuan looked at Shen Yuchu, then fastened his seatbelt and drove on.
This time, Shen Yuchu was quiet.
When they arrived at Dalu village, Lu Chunhuan was sitting on a brick by the village entrance, basking in the setting sun, wearing thick, light blue cotton-padded trousers.
She was eating peanuts and sweet potatoes, loudly proclaiming, “Whoever marries my son will be lucky.
My son is handsome, tall, a real catch in this village.
You won’t find a handsome young man like my son in the whole of Da Gua Town.”
Yingzi’s mother glanced at Lu Chunhuan, “If your son is so great, why is he 24 and still single?”
In the countryside, 24 was considered old, some people’s children were already walking.
Shen Yuchu’s younger brother, Shen YuLong, had only finished middle school and spent his days at home playing video games, whether it was Hokage Ninja or Shadow Legends.
He refused to work, claiming it was too tiring. He’d recently tried working as a waiter but quit after a short time.
Lu Chunhuan would constantly boast and gossip at the village entrance.
Just then, a military jeep pulled up to the entrance of Dalu village.
Since Lu Chunhuan’s house was the first one at the entrance, the car parked conveniently.
“Wow! That’s a nice car, green!” A woman in the village exclaimed.
Lu Chunhuan saw someone getting out, recognized Shen Yuchu, Lin Xuan, Shen Chunfen, Lin Hui (carrying a child), and Mrs. Wu.
She immediately stood up and announced to the villagers, “It’s my family! Oh, who is it? It’s my military son-in-law, he’s back!”
Lu Chunhuan grabbed a handful of peanuts and went to Lin Xuan, fawning over him, “Come, come, have some peanuts. What brings you back today?”
Her son-in-law was a successful man, with an allowance. Now her son’s marriage prospects looked good.
If her son-in-law gave her another 500 yuan, she could build a new house.
