It really might be true—what great news!
Wang Lin turned to look at him, noticing something off about his expression.
“Brother Yan, what’s wrong?
You look… kinda pissed?”
Xiao Jingyan clenched his molars.
“Wait here. I’m heading out.”
Wang Lin immediately thought of Jiang Niannian.
“Bro, you going to find Miss Jiang?”
Xiao Jingyan waved his hand.
“I’m going to find her dad!”
Meanwhile, Jiang Niannian, completely unaware that her marriage matters had taken another twist, was crouching by the wall of Li Laosan’s house—chatting with his rats.
“So what you’re saying is, Li Laosan didn’t plan to poison the pond himself?
Someone asked him to buy the pesticide?
Who was it?”
Big Black Rat: “This rat doesn’t know either. Just knows the pesticide is still at Li Laosan’s place. It hasn’t been delivered yet.
Don’t worry, I’ll keep watch for you. If anything happens, I’ll notify Big Yellow.”
Jiang Niannian: “It hasn’t been sent yet? That person behind him sure takes their sweet time.
Alright then, I’ll count on you guys. I only brought some sugar pancakes today—have a bite, they’re super tasty.”
She bribed the rat with a piece of pancake. As for Big Yellow, no way—dogs can’t eat sweets; it’s like poison to them.
Squatting beside the wall, Niannian broke the pancake into little pieces, letting the rat take them back to its hole.
A young man in army green clothes looked her up and down.
“Hey, isn’t this the city girl who just returned to the Jiang family in our village?
Gotta say, girls from the city really are pretty.”
The young man next to him licked his lips while staring at Jiang Niannian.
“Sanbenzi, she’s from your village?
You’ve got a stunner like this in your hometown and didn’t say anything?
She’s hot, but kinda skinny.”
“Brother Fendou, look closely—what part of her is skinny? She looks great!
Hey, Jiang Niannian, are you feeding rats over there?”
The one called “Fendou” stared at her face.
“She’s definitely good-looking… but is she dumb or something?”
The two guys kept whispering vulgar things near her. Even Big Yellow couldn’t take it anymore and started barking furiously.
[Woof woof! Scram, you dumb punks!]
“Isn’t that the village chief’s dog? Why’s it protecting her?
It looks pretty fat—maybe we should catch it and stew it later. That’d feed us for two meals!”
“Quit it. That dog once saved the chief’s life. If you touch it, he’ll kill you.”
Sanbenzi glanced at Niannian, then at their surroundings. Seeing no one nearby, he began inching toward her.
“Hey, sis, I heard city girls have soft skin.
Let me feel how soft yours is?”
Jiang Niannian stood where she was, coldly watching the two of them.
“You’ve got some nerve. I have two big brothers, you know.”
The one called Fendou nudged Sanbenzi with his shoulder.
“Go stand watch for me.”
Then he slowly approached Niannian—
“So what if you’ve got two brothers? They’ll be my brothers-in-law in the future. We’ll all be one big family.
If they beat me up, wouldn’t you feel bad?”
Big Yellow rushed up and started barking, assuming a fierce, low-growling stance.
[Woof woof! Are you blind?! You touch her, and I’ll bite you to death!]
Jiang Niannian bent down and stroked Big Yellow’s head.
“It’s okay, Big Yellow. Don’t get worked up.”
She looked the guy up and down, then said coolly:
“I don’t know if you acted on impulse or got lustful seeing a girl,
but based on your pathetic looks, what makes you think you deserve me?
Did you graduate high school? Get into college?
Look at your cratered face—it’s like a cornfield. Ugly nose, beady eyes with this creepy gleam,
and when you open your mouth—those yellow teeth look like you’ve been eating literal crap.
Your breath could kill a tree, and you’re about as pleasant as a squashed rat.
No education, no dignity, barely taller than a dwarf.
You’ve got nothing good going for you, inside or out—disgusting, uneducated,
can’t see a girl without trying to harass her, and clearly clueless about the law.
If I didn’t fight back today, were you planning to do something worse?
Your parents must regret giving birth to such a disaster.
Even your family tomb’s probably smoking with rage.
Do you even know that forcing yourself on a woman is illegal?”
Wang Fendou never expected to be ripped to shreds like that. He burst into a laugh—furious.
“You really think I won’t hit a woman?!”
“I wouldn’t want to be your mom even if you begged me—what a cursed fate!
Even a burnt pork chop is better than raising you!”
SLAP!
Before he could react, Jiang Niannian slapped him across the face, his head snapping to the side.
“You really think I’m some pushover, huh?
Or are you just used to bullying women and thought I’d be an easy target?
Well, you’ve got someone to cover for you, right?
Then I’ll take this chance to bully you!”
With that, she threw him over her shoulder—again and again, slamming him into the ground.
Throw. Slam. Throw. Slam. Throw. Slam. Throw. Slam. Throw. Slam.
SLAP SLAP SLAP SLAP SLAP!!
“Phew! Loosened up the muscles—feels great!”
Big Yellow hunched down nearby, scared out of his doggy mind.
This girl had just gone beast mode—scary as hell!
Sanbenzi, who was hiding around the corner to keep watch, peeked over—and was completely dumbfounded.
Niannian cracked her wrists and slowly stepped toward him.
Still unaware of the incoming doom, Sanbenzi pointed a trembling finger at her.
“You… you dared hit Brother Fendou?!
AAAAHHHHH—!!”
After Niannian and the dog walked off, someone slipped out from behind a tree on the mountain.
The tabby cat darted from the bushes.
[Niannian, someone was hiding on the mountain. I don’t recognize him,
but he was behind the tree while you were fighting. I saw it all.]
Niannian’s eyes sharpened. She patted Big Yellow beside her.
“Big Yellow, you know everyone in the village.
Go check if that person is from the village—or at least if you’ve seen him before.
See if he’s connected to Li Laosan.”
Big Yellow, still spooked earlier, snapped to attention and headed back.
The tabby cat climbed onto his head to guide the way.
Niannian stood under a nearby tree, idly picking at the bark while waiting for them.
Xiao Jingyan had gone to Jiang Weiguo’s home but didn’t find Niannian,
so he wandered through the village—eventually spotting her from afar, picking at a tree and scanning her surroundings.
Naturally, Jiang Niannian saw him too.
She coolly looked away—then ran off.
Xiao Jingyan’s mouth twitched. He really felt like he needed to have a serious talk with this girl.
After all, she was the one who slept with him first.
Sure, based on what Wang Lin had found out, he could more or less guess the situation that night.
But her attitude yesterday—avoiding him like the plague—left him inexplicably annoyed.
And now she actually ran away again after seeing him?
What, was he that unpleasant to look at?
For the first time, Xiao Jingyan doubted his own appearance.
Was he really that ugly?
