Chapter 5: Even Without Breath, It Can Be Saved
Su Luoluo was a disciple of a ghost doctor. Her master’s medical skills were so amazing, so why wasn’t he called a divine doctor but a ghost doctor? Of course, it was because he used unorthodox methods, didn’t follow the rules, and did plenty of unscrupulous things.
She carried two packets of beast-subduing medicine in her arms. It was a formula she had developed in her previous life and tested. One packet could knock out an elephant, let alone tigers and bears.
Su Luoluo had experience in wilderness survival, thanks to her master. They had once gotten into trouble in a war zone and had to escape into the forest, living there for half a year before finding a way back to their country.
From the traces and footprints on the ground, Su Luoluo could determine what animals had been active in the area. She used bamboo, sticks, and vines to make several animal traps.
She crouched down, dug up a small piece of mud, crushed it, and carefully observed it. The soil here was very suitable for growing medicinal herbs. She ventured deeper into the mountains and collected many herbs, constantly searching based on soil looseness, moisture content, fertility, and sunlight.
On a patch of humus, Su Luoluo found a wild ginseng.
Judging by its size, this ginseng was several decades old, a rare and precious treasure.
Su Luoluo carefully dug up the ginseng, trying to avoid damaging it, as this would affect its value.
She picked a few large taro leaves, laid them at the bottom of her basket, carefully wrapped the ginseng, and put it in the basket.
Su Luoluo didn’t go any deeper into the mountains; she turned and left.
From the village to the town, one could only take an ox cart, costing fifty cents per person.
Su Luoluo didn’t get carsick, but the bumpy road made the ox cart jolt so much that her bottom felt like it was going to fall apart.
Arriving in town and getting off the cart, she felt her bottom had gone numb.
She found the largest Chinese herbal medicine shop in town—Guang’an Pharmacy.
Su Luoluo said to the boss behind the counter, “Boss, do you buy herbs?”
“What kind of herbs?”
The boss, manipulating the abacus beads, looked up and glanced at Su Luoluo through his thick glasses.
“Ginseng.”
Su Luoluo took out the ginseng from her basket.
The boss stopped his work and looked at Su Luoluo again. Upon seeing the ginseng in her hand, his eyes lit up. He came out, took the ginseng, and examined it.
“This ginseng is at least fifty years old, worth a lot of money. I understand pharmacology and can identify herbs. If you encounter good things in the mountains in the future, please consider our shop first.”
Su Luoluo spoke first.
She said this to let the other party understand that she was not illiterate and couldn’t be easily fooled. She also indicated that she would bring him more precious herbs in the future, ensuring long-term business and preventing him from underpricing her goods.
The boss’s shrewd eyes circled Su Luoluo. Seeing her calm demeanor, he knew she had some skills and dared not try any tricks. He held up five fingers, “Five thousand.”
Su Luoluo frowned. This decades-old ginseng would be worth at least hundreds of thousands in modern times, but in this era, a ten-thousand-yuan household was considered wealthy, so five thousand yuan seemed reasonable.
“Five thousand is a fair price, I can’t give you more.”
Seeing the woman frown, Boss Cai, explained.
Su Luoluo nodded. “Do you have acupuncture needles? I need a set.”
“Yes, but they’re expensive.”
Boss Cai looked at Su Luoluo with new respect.
People who knew acupuncture were skilled.
He was glad he hadn’t tried to cheat her.
Su Luoluo asked, “How much?”
“Four thousand six hundred.”
Boss Cai said.
“So expensive!”
Su Luoluo’s face darkened. She only got five thousand for the ginseng, and buying a set of acupuncture needles cost four thousand six hundred, leaving her with only four hundred.
Boss Cai, “These are delicate things, not something ordinary people can afford, so they’re expensive.”
Seeing Su Luoluo didn’t react for a long time, he hesitantly asked, “Do you still want the needles?”
“Yes.”
Su Luoluo gritted her teeth and bought them. They were her tools, she couldn’t be without them.
Boss Cai went into the back room and quickly brought out a genuine leather bag, saying cheerfully to Su Luoluo, “This is a good thing.”
Su Luoluo took the leather bag and opened it. A set of acupuncture needles was inside. She took out a needle; the quality was quite good.
However, she had used gold needles before, and now she could only afford a set of silver needles, a significant difference.
Su Luoluo took the four hundred yuan, carried her basket, and left the pharmacy. She had many things to buy today and couldn’t carry them all. There were three tractors in town. Since it wasn’t the busy farming season, she should be able to hire one to transport things back.
On the way, she bought a bag of candy and ate it.
Mmm, it tasted good.
The things used in this era were all made with real materials, unlike in modern times, where technology and additives were used.
“There’s been a car accident!”
Suddenly, there was a commotion ahead.
“The car overturned!”
“So much blood, it’s terrifying.”
“It looks like the person won’t survive.”
“I heard they’re not breathing…”
A crowd had gathered on the road ahead. Su Luoluo went over.
A middle-aged man with a crew cut and a square face, looked upright and righteous. His head was bleeding profusely, and his hand hung limply at his side, apparently dislocated. But he didn’t seem to care about his own injuries; his face was filled with grief as he begged the people around him to save his elder.
An elderly man in a Zhongshan suit lay unconscious on the ground.
The middle-aged man continued, “As long as you save him, there will be a generous reward.”
“He’s not breathing anymore. Even Hua Tuo reborn couldn’t do anything.”
“Someone’s gone to the clinic to get a doctor. Let’s wait for the doctor.”
…
A generous reward!!!
Su Luoluo shuddered, crushing the candy in her mouth. A generous reward = a lot of money! Lots and lots of money!
“I’m that someone! Hire me!”
Su Luoluo raised her hand and squeezed through the crowd.
Unbeknownst to her, an old man with a long beard was about to step forward.
Seeing Su Luoluo approach, he stopped.
Everyone looked at Su Luoluo like she was crazy.
“Comrade, he’s not breathing anymore. You shouldn’t get involved; it could cause trouble.”
Someone kindly warned her.
The man had died in the accident, but if she interfered, she might be blamed for his death.
A manslaughter charge was no joke.
The middle-aged man seemed to understand this as well. He quickly assured her, “No matter the outcome, I won’t cause you any trouble, miss.”
“To practice medicine and save lives, a doctor must have compassion. How can I stand by and watch someone die?”
“Don’t worry, even if he’s not breathing, I can save him.”
Su Luoluo checked for breath; there was none.
Someone must have checked before.
She felt for a pulse, frowning. There was no pulse.
“You’re young, but your words are big. The man is dead, how can you save him?”
“Don’t talk big, you might bite your tongue.”
“If you get involved in a manslaughter case, you’ll have nowhere to cry.”
The people around were not optimistic, thinking she was boasting.
A man with a strong aura stood not far away.
The man had handsome sword brows, sharp hawk-like eyes hidden beneath them, a high nose, and thin, sexy lips with a hint of coldness. He was handsome and masculine.
His face was exquisite, a perfect work of art.
He was tall and strong but not rough, with a commanding presence.
The man’s gaze pierced the crowd, falling on the woman surrounded by gossip. She remained calm and composed, even smiling while checking the pulse…
