Chapter 34: The Great Immortal Huang(Wong Tai Sin
)
“This is for you too,” Leng You said, taking out a bankbook and once again stuffing it into Wen Jiu Yue’s hand.
“Another bankbook? Goodness! This…this…how can there be so much?”
Seeing the amount in the bankbook, Wen Jiu Yue thought she was seeing things. She rubbed her eyes, looked again, and counted the zeros over and over, finally confirming she hadn’t made a mistake. She was so shocked she threw the bankbook away.
As a child, her father had taught her some characters; after marriage, she learned more from her husband, so she had no problem reading the bankbook.
“Yes, this is the money we’ve earned over the past month.
And this.”
Leng You placed a property deed in front of everyone.
“A property deed? You bought a house in the county town?” Even Bai Changpu’s eyes widened.
“I decided to put it in Youyou’s name,” Xiang Wen Tian spoke, worried that Wen Jiu Yue would misunderstand Leng You.
“Goodness! You two children, how…how capable are you? You…you…” Wen Jiu Yue didn’t know how to express the shock and surprise the two children had brought her.
Her head was buzzing; she didn’t care whose name was on the property deed, nor should the bankbook be in her name.
Of course, even if it were in her name, she wouldn’t touch a cent, including the five hundred yuan Leng You had given her before.
“Keep these safe. Don’t let the Leng family find out, or there will be big trouble,” Xiang Huaixin said, a headache already forming at the thought of the ruthless Ma Dahua.
Not just Ma Dahua, Leng Tiezhu was even worse – lecherous, vicious, and greedy; the worst of human nature was fully displayed in that man.
And Leng You’s father, Leng Shugen, completely inherited his father’s evil traits, though he was far less cunning and insidious than Leng Tiezhu; he was both bad and cowardly.
“Grandma Wen, please keep them,” Leng You again placed the bankbook and property deed in Wen Jiu Yue’s hands.
“This…” Wen Jiu Yue was at a loss.
“Sister Wen, listen to Youyou!” Xiang Huaixin also spoke.
“That’s right, Sister Wen, it’s safest if you keep them. Besides, we know what kind of person you are; we know you truly love little Youyou,” Bai Changpu, always direct, added.
“Alright! Then I’ll keep them for Youyou,” Wen Jiu Yue finally agreed.
“Grandfather Xiang, Grandfather Bai, and Grandma Wen, please accept these red envelopes,” Leng You saw that they had all placed the red envelopes on the kang (heated bed), knowing they were reluctant to accept them, so she put on a serious face.
“We appreciate your thoughtfulness, Grandfather Xiang. We don’t need the money. Keep it; if the secret of this valley is discovered, you’ll lose your source of income.
Save more money; it’s better to be prepared,” Xiang Huaixin considered Leng You’s future.
“Your Grandfather Xiang is right; we don’t need or spend much money. We lacked food and clothing, but now, because of you and Xiaotian, and because of Grandma Wen, we eat well and dress warmly.
Tsk tsk… even the life of a god isn’t much better than this!”
Bai Changpu’s inherent optimism meant he didn’t have excessive desires and was easily satisfied.
“You didn’t accept them last time, but you must accept them this time,” Leng You was adamant.
“Accept them!” Xiang Wen Tian, knowing Leng You’s stubbornness, finally spoke up.
“In that case, we’ll accept them,” Xiang Huaixin was the first to take a red envelope, though he already had other plans.
Bai Changpu and Wen Jiu Yue could only do the same. But as elders accepting money from a younger person, especially such a young child, they felt uneasy.
At this moment, none of them thought about the hard work and fatigue of the past few days, nor did they consider their significant contribution to the earnings.
Wen Jiu Yue was undoubtedly the most affected by this windfall. Perhaps from shock or excitement, she hardly slept all night.
She would occasionally look towards the chest in the dark. Just thinking about the huge amount of money, bankbooks, cash, and property deeds inside made her heart pound.
She worried about its safety, wondering what would happen if it was robbed…
She wasn’t worried about the Leng family causing trouble because, according to Bai Changpu, after he declared his inability to cure the Leng family’s illness, Leng Tiezhu had traveled over mountains and rivers, taking eight days to secretly invite a highly skilled immortal from the county town.
Of course, the Leng family hadn’t been quiet during those eight days. The “ghost in black with flames” would occasionally visit them at night, leaving everyone except the child named Da Danzi half-dead.
At a critical moment, Leng Tiezhu rushed back home with the immortal.
However, the immortal stopped at the doorstep, looking around with a fearful and serious expression before saying something that made Leng Tiezhu urinate on the spot:
“A violently deceased ghost wants to claim the lives of your entire family!”
“Ah! Then…then…what…what should we do?” Leng Tiezhu’s teeth chattered, his body trembling, his tongue tied.
“Sigh…it’s not easy,” the immortal shook his head, looking troubled.
“Ah?” Leng Tiezhu almost fainted.
“It’s not impossible, but it’s difficult,” the immortal stroked his beard, looking enigmatic.
“Immortal Huang, can you be more specific?” Leng Tiezhu quickly feigned composure. He wasn’t stupid; on the contrary, he was extremely cunning and wouldn’t allow himself to be fooled.
“I can only see this much now. I need to offer incense and ask the immortal ancestors for the answer,” the immortal seemed humble.
Despite the cold, the immortal refused to enter the house because the stench emanating from the crack in the door was enough to repel him.
An altar was quickly set up, three incense sticks were inserted into the incense burner, and the immortal, waving his peach wood sword, began to chant.
Perhaps hearing that an immortal was there to exorcise demons, Leng Tiezhu’s wife, Shi Sanyue, Leng Shugen, and Ma Dahua felt a sudden surge of energy and struggled to get up.
The three supported each other, swaying as they walked out of the house.
The immortal was standing in the wind. As the three came out, a gust of north wind blew, carrying a strong stench into the immortal’s nostrils, almost suffocating him.
He steadied his peach wood sword, held his breath, and pointed at the three with the sword:
“Go stand over there.”
“Ah?” The three, already unsteady on their feet and dazed, stood there dumbfounded.
“What are you standing there for? Can’t you understand human speech? Didn’t the immortal tell you to go over there? Get over there!”
