Chapter 16 I Believe in Dr. Gu

“I still have things to do today, we’ll talk later.” Lin Qinghai left with a sullen face, turning straight around. Gu Chuxue instinctively wanted to chase after him, but Lin Jinxiu grabbed her.

“Chuxue!”

“Jinxiu, didn’t you see Qinghai-ge was upset? I need to go explain to him.” Gu Chuxue frowned tightly.

“What’s there to explain to him?” Lin Jinxiu was utterly speechless. “Xiaoxue, you can’t be so humble and blindly give in to a man. Lin Qinghai isn’t even worthy of you to begin with, and now you’re not even married yet and he dares to give you the cold shoulder? What will happen after marriage? Now’s the time to teach him a lesson!”

“Alright! We agreed today was for us to have fun. Let’s not talk about these unpleasant people or things. In a bit, I’ll take you to eat at the state-run restaurant.” Lin Jinxiu pulled Gu Chuxue away.

But Gu Chuxue was preoccupied, distracted no matter what she did.
Qinghai-ge must be angry…

Military compound, bedtime. Zhang Pingtian told Gu Jinshu about “going to the military district for consultations” tomorrow. It was a “benefit” arranged for the soldiers, so problems could be detected early. The doctors allowed to see patients there were all experts from top hospitals—orthopedics, cardiovascular, and so on, including their Chinese medicine department.

Gu Jinshu went to bed early.

The next morning, she and her teacher arrived among the earliest. The oversized consulting room temporarily arranged for the doctors was still mostly empty, like a room that had been vacated ahead of time, with neat rows of desks and chairs.

“You wait here for a bit, I’m going over there to talk to an old friend.” Zhang Pingtian told her, then walked off with his hands behind his back.

Just as Gu Jinshu sat down, a displeased voice came coldly from the side:
“What are you doing here? This is not a place for you to fool around!”

The man wore a white coat, gold-rimmed glasses perched on his nose. His brows and eyes bore some resemblance to hers, but they were full of impatience.

Gu Moyu.

Her biological older brother.
He was an orthopedic surgeon at the First People’s Hospital.

Thinking of what her teacher said last night, it wasn’t surprising to see him here today.

Her voice was even colder than his:
“None of your business.”

“You!” Gu Moyu opened his mouth, about to say more, but noise came from outside—the first group of soldiers had arrived for their check-ups! He snorted, deciding to speak later; there was work to do now.

The orthopedics section where Gu Moyu was stationed was right next to the Chinese medicine section, so he was only a few meters away from Gu Jinshu.

Her teacher hadn’t returned yet, so Gu Jinshu began taking pulses first. The soldiers were all strong and fit, training daily, and most had no issues. But some had sustained injuries during missions.

When she reached the third soldier, she detected a “problem” through his pulse.

“Does your leg hurt whenever it’s windy, rainy, or cold?”

“Yes. I had surgery on it two years ago—my calf was hacked here.” The soldier rolled up his pants at her request, revealing a horrific scar that showed how serious the injury had been.

“You’re young now, so the pain is bearable. But as you get older, it will gradually become unbearable, and in old age, it could become completely useless.” Gu Jinshu pressed on the injured spot. “However, there’s still a chance to cure it now, with herbal medicine combined with acupuncture.”

“Useless?!” The soldier’s eyes widened in disbelief. “I went to the hospital for a check-up, the doctor said I had fully recovered, and that occasional pain was normal. Little sister, don’t scare me.”

“It won’t hurt for no reason. From the Western medicine perspective, yes, it looks fully healed. But from our Chinese medicine perspective, it’s not completely recovered.” Her lips pressed into a line. “When your training time is long, does your leg also start feeling uncomfortable?”

“Yes.” By now, the soldier had to admit she was right. This young girl was spot on—amazing!

“I can give you acupuncture right now, and you’ll feel relief immediately.” She took out a case of silver needles, a row of long, gleaming needles laid neatly on the table. The tall soldier’s legs visibly trembled.

“No, wait, I… suddenly feel fine again.” He visibly chickened out. He wasn’t afraid of climbing mountains of swords or walking through seas of fire—but these long needles? No thanks!

“You’re playing with people’s lives!” Gu Moyu could no longer tolerate her “reckless treatment.” Their parents had told him she was now a student of Professor Zhang in Chinese medicine and had cut ties with the family. She could make trouble if she wanted, and they’d chalk it up to immaturity—but putting people’s lives at risk was another matter.

Others might not know her limits, but he did. To him, she was like a child playing house. A few needles from her could cripple someone!

“What’s going on?” The soldier was confused now. The two doctors were arguing?

“When was your last X-ray? Did the doctor say anything?” Gu Moyu asked, controlling his emotions.

“No. The doctor said I was recovering very well and that occasional pain was normal.”

“That means the surgery was very successful. This was a serious injury, and bone and tendon injuries take time to heal. You should just pay more attention to resting in the future.” Gu Moyu nodded. “Next.”

“If you had surgery because of an injury, and the surgery was successful, then recurring pain is not normal. How can you stand here lying through your teeth?” Gu Jinshu shot back.

“…” The quarrel immediately drew everyone’s attention.

Clenching his fists, Gu Moyu said, “I graduated from a top domestic university, studied abroad for years, and I’m an outstanding orthopedic doctor with multiple published papers—recognized both at home and abroad. What’s your degree? Between us, who’s the one lying through their teeth?”

“Having a good degree doesn’t prove anything.” She had guessed he would use education to try to crush her. “As for whether what I said is true, sit down, and you’ll know after I treat you.” She insisted on acupuncture.

Gu Moyu grew anxious. “Gu Jinshu! You’re just looking for a guinea pig to experiment on. Before this, you’ve never given anyone acupuncture. You don’t realize how serious this is! Where’s Professor Zhang? How can he let a clueless student treat patients here?”

“I’ve received acupuncture from Dr. Gu before. I believe in her medical skills.”
