After hesitating for a long time, she finally called Pei Jingyan.
The call connected quickly, and Pei Jingyan spoke first: “Mom, Qingran and I are engaged. We’ll get the marriage certificate as soon as possible.”
Jiang Zhuo felt a bit dizzy: “Jingyan, are you serious?”
Pei Jingyan replied, “Yes.”
For years, Jiang Zhuo felt she owed her eldest son something, but Pei Jingyan had a reserved personality, and she often didn’t know how to communicate with him.
Just like now, she realized that her usually eloquent speaking ability had failed her, and she could only calmly say, “If you really plan to marry her, then treat her well. Xiaoran is a great girl; it’s your brother who doesn’t know how to cherish her.”
Pei Jingyan replied, “I know.”
Jiang Zhuo then said, “Alright, come home when you have time. Since you’re getting married, we need to discuss the details.”
Pei Jingyan agreed, “Okay.”
With that, Jiang Zhuo had to hang up the phone.
It was only at this moment that she suddenly recalled many details from years ago that she had overlooked—
Whenever Su Qingran came to find Jiang Chenlin, Pei Jingyan, who usually preferred to read alone at home, would occasionally come out to fetch water or get something.
In short, as long as Su Qingran was around, Pei Jingyan, who was rarely seen, would always appear in Jiang Zhuo’s line of sight.
And just a few days ago, Pei Jingyan had come home for no apparent reason and had found an excuse to do so.
Jiang Zhuo sighed and picked up her phone again to call Jiang Chenlin.
However, the line was still off.
Since the afternoon after the engagement banquet, Jiang Chenlin had driven alone to the cemetery.
After that, he took his passport and said he would be going abroad for a while.
Jiang Zhuo was furious when she returned home. She tried to stop Jiang Chenlin, but the kid had already secretly taken his passport to the airport.
He didn’t leave a word behind, just said he was going out and didn’t mention when he would return.
Listening to the call that the system had automatically disconnected, Jiang Zhuo thought for a moment and decided to call the person in charge of the Xu family.
Soon, she got Xu Yin’s number.
“Miss Xu, is my son with you?” Jiang Zhuo was now extremely disgusted with this younger generation, whom she had met but didn’t know well.
“No,” Xu Yin felt guilty in front of Jiang Zhuo. “I was just an actress he asked to come along. I have no relationship with Young Master Jiang at all. After I left the engagement banquet yesterday, I haven’t contacted him again.”
She hurriedly explained in one breath: “I shouldn’t have agreed to this. I was just caught up in the moment, wanting to see Su Qingran fail. But after seeing that scene yesterday, I wanted to run… In short, I was wrong, and I apologize! I really have no relationship with Young Master Jiang; not to mention kissing, the only thing that happened was that my hand was grabbed at the engagement banquet, which shouldn’t count, right? I think he and Su Qingran must have some misunderstanding. He purposely made me irritate Su Qingran, so I was just a tool.”
Jiang Zhuo had heard some comments about Xu Yin in the circle, noting that she was quite spoiled. So her current attitude, as she described, was simply that she regretted her role as a tool.
It seemed there was no deception involved.
“So Miss Xu doesn’t know why Jiang Chenlin did this?” Jiang Zhuo asked.
Xu Yin replied, “No, I have no idea. That day at the hotel, he discussed specific details with me, but when I asked why, he wouldn’t say anything, just told me to act like a wooden person.”
“Alright, thank you, Miss Xu.” Jiang Zhuo paused slightly before saying, “If Jiang Chenlin contacts you, remember to tell him that Xiaoran is now engaged to his brother. And from what I hear, they’ll be getting their marriage certificate soon.”
“Ah—” Xu Yin was shocked and wanted to ask more, but Jiang Zhuo finished and hung up the phone.
Xu Yin’s heart raced. Originally feeling despondent after realizing she had gotten herself into a big mess, she suddenly felt invigorated.
Ignoring that calling her father would probably result in another scolding, she still asked, “Dad, is Su Qingran engaged to Pei Jingyan?”
Xu Father had just learned this from a partner. While some people viewed gossip as just gossip, businesspeople were concerned about whether this engagement could lead to a real marriage. Were the Su family and Pei Jingyan truly tied together?
Many decisions required accurate information.
“That’s the case for now, but we need further confirmation on the specifics,” Xu Father said, his calm demeanor suddenly turning into frustration. “You always get into trouble! Do you know that your reputation as a third party is spreading in the circle? Who would dare want you now? You’re still interested in gossiping about others!”
Xu Yin was so frightened that she quickly admitted her fault and hung up the phone.
But as soon as the call ended, she became excited again.
As someone who inadvertently participated in this melodramatic saga of a wealthy family, she was eager to find out if Jiang Chenlin knew that after his escape from marriage yesterday, his “ex-fiancée” was now with his half-brother.
Xu Yin took out her phone and sent Jiang Chenlin a WeChat message—
“Hi, congratulations! Your ex-girlfriend is now your sister-in-law! Don’t forget to bring me along for the wedding feast!”
However, just as Xu Yin sent the message, she received a system notification with an exclamation mark—
“You are not friends with the other party. Please add them as a friend before sending a message.”
She stared at the message for several seconds, first feeling angry, then unable to help but burst into laughter.
Great, Jiang Chenlin is playing hide-and-seek, huh? When he comes back, there might even be a child!
