“Tonight, someone must stay by Mrs. Huang’s side and constantly monitor her temperature. If she has a fever, use a damp cloth to wipe her down to lower her temperature. The wound needs medication morning and evening. If Mrs. Huang wakes up smoothly tomorrow, she should be fine, but the wound might hurt when she first wakes up. Tell her to be careful and not to break open the stitches.”
“If everything is alright, she can be helped to get out of bed and move around slightly after three days, which will aid her recovery. I will come here to remove the stitches after seven days.”
After telling Xiaolian a series of things to pay attention to, Chu Yue turned to Doctor Zhu.
“Doctor Zhu, you will also need to prescribe a detoxification decoction for Mrs. Huang to prevent wound infection. She should take only a small amount before the gas dissipates, then the normal dosage afterward.”
She didn’t remember the specific formula, but she knew there was such a decoction, primarily used for inflammation and fever, which would be suitable for Mrs. Huang.
Since there were no Western medicines, they could only rely on Chinese medicine for anti-inflammation. It was better than nothing.
Whether she could survive the later stages depended on Mrs. Huang herself.
Doctor Zhu quickly nodded. “Okay.”
He wasn’t surprised that Chu Yue knew about the Huanglian Detoxification Decoction. Since she could deliver herbs to Chen’s Pharmacy, she must understand medicine, which wasn’t strange.
Having done all this, Chu Yue touched her empty stomach.
“Now that Mrs. Huang’s situation is resolved, I won’t stay longer. My husband is waiting outside.”
Even such a short time felt like a long time.
Xiaolian quickly escorted Chu Yue out of the room and recounted Chu Yue’s actions to Magistrate Huang.
Magistrate Huang looked at Chu Yue with gratitude and bowed. “Today, thank you, miss, for saving my wife and child’s lives.”
Chu Yue turned sideways and quickly waved her hand. “Magistrate Huang, you’re welcome. I just happened to be in the right place at the right time. It’s also because you and your wife have accumulated good deeds that your wife and son escaped this calamity. However, tonight is crucial for your wife. If she gets through the night, she will be safe. Magistrate Huang, please have a doctor stay in the residence tonight.”
Although Magistrate Huang was wealthy, he didn’t have any concubines, only his wife, Mrs. Huang. They had a very good relationship, and even though they had been married for many years without having children, he had not dismissed her.
He was a man of integrity and loyalty.
Just then, Doctor Zhu, who had finished writing the prescription, came out of the room.
Magistrate Huang beckoned, and the steward came over carrying a tray.
He lifted the red cloth on the tray, revealing four brand-new large silver ingots. Looking at the two of them, he said, “Both of you are great benefactors of my Huang family. I don’t know how to repay you, but I hope you will accept these two hundred taels of silver. In the future, if you encounter any difficulties in Nanping Town, you can come to the Huang family and find me. Although I am not a high-ranking official, I can still speak a few words in this Nanping Town.”
Doctor Zhu quickly waved his hand. “To be honest, it was this young lady who was responsible for your wife’s safe delivery today. I didn’t really help much, so I really can’t accept this money. Magistrate Huang, just send someone to settle the consultation fee with Chen’s Pharmacy.”
Magistrate Huang clasped his hands.
“In that case, I will trouble Doctor Zhu with this.”
“Magistrate Huang, you’re too kind. Farewell.”
After saying this, Doctor Zhu nodded slightly to Chu Yue and left with his medicine box.
Magistrate Huang personally took the tray from the steward and handed it to Chu Yue. “Please, miss, accept this.”
Chu Yue didn’t refuse. After all, one shouldn’t refuse money, and besides, she deserved it. She just didn’t expect Magistrate Huang to be so generous.
She took the tray and gracefully curtsied. “Thank you, Magistrate Huang.”
Magistrate Huang waved his hand.
“Miss, you’re welcome. It’s just some worldly possessions, far less valuable than the lives of my wife and child. From now on, you will be a valuable guest of my Huang family. But I don’t know your honored surname or where you live?”
Seeing her hesitation, he immediately explained, “Miss, please don’t worry. The main reason is that my wife is still unconscious, and knowing where you live will allow us to find you quickly if she needs anything. Besides, I only want to know the name of my benefactor; I have no ill intentions.”
Chu Yue understood and immediately said, “My surname is Chu, my husband’s surname is Lu, and we live in Banpo Village. My home is far from town. If your wife has any problems, Magistrate Huang will find it easier to find Doctor Zhu. I’m just bold; Doctor Zhu is the truly skilled physician.”
Magistrate Huang found the girl both interesting and honest. “Miss, you’re quite humble.”
Chu Yue smiled a little embarrassedly.
“I’m just being truthful. My husband is waiting outside, so I won’t disturb Magistrate Huang any longer. Farewell.”
Magistrate Huang nodded and looked at the steward.
“See Miss Chu out.”
“Yes, sir.” The steward said, then led Chu Yue out of Yi Mei Yuan. “Miss, how about we send a carriage to Banpo Village to pick you up in seven days?”
Chu Yue said a little embarrassedly, “Wouldn’t that be too much trouble?”
After all, she had been paid for her services.
The steward quickly shook his head. “Miss, please don’t be so polite. It’s a quick trip from Nanping Town by carriage; it’s not troublesome at all.”
Chu Yue thought for a moment, then said, “Then in seven days, just have the carriage arrive at the village entrance. I will be waiting at the entrance before the hour of Chen.”
She didn’t want to attract too much attention.
The steward hadn’t expected the young lady to be so unassuming, but because of this, his impression of her grew even better.
Indeed, those with true skills never show off in front of others.
On the way, Chu Yue put the two hundred taels of silver into her pocket and returned the tray to the steward. When she saw Lu Xinghe waiting for her in the gazebo ahead, Chu Yue smiled and ran towards him.
“Husband.”
Because she was running too fast, she didn’t notice a small, raised cobblestone and almost fell. Fortunately, Lu Xinghe quickly caught her.
“Why are you so careless?”
His tone of reproach was filled with more worry.
Chu Yue stuck out her tongue and whispered, “I just saw you.”
Lu Xinghe felt helpless and led her out of the Huang residence.
“Hungry? Let’s get something to eat first.”
Chu Yue nodded with a smile.
“Okay.”
The steward saw the couple out of the Huang residence and watched them leave Qiyun Alley before closing the gate.
After all this, it was already afternoon. The noodle shop wasn’t crowded, so the couple found a corner seat. Chu Yue took out the silver ingots, which felt cumbersome in her clothes, wrapped them in a handkerchief, and handed them to Lu Xinghe.
“Husband, it’s safer if you keep this.”
Holding the heavy silver ingots, Lu Xinghe was incredibly surprised.
“This is from Magistrate Huang?”
Chu Yue nodded and whispered, “Mrs. Huang successfully gave birth, and Magistrate Huang gave me this much.”
As she spoke, she quietly held up two fingers.
Seeing her cautious manner, Lu Xinghe smiled, stroked her head, and then placed the silver in the backpack beside him.
