Chapter 6: Arriving at the Xi Residence
On the third day after confirming his pending registration status, Shi Chan was sent off by the Shi family to board the flying ship heading to the Xi family’s old residence—currently Xi Ming’s place of residence.
The person who came to pick up Shi Chan was Xi Songkai’s son, Xi Hanrong. When Xi Hanrong saw Shi Chan in person for the first time, he paused ever so slightly, but after that, he hardly looked at Shi Chan. Throughout the trip, he remained silent, sitting quietly in the flying ship.
It was instead Xi Songkai who made another video call with Shi Chan, his words once again centering on Xi Ming’s plight, urging Shi Chan to take the initiative and be accommodating toward him.
“… You know, Xi Ming’s health and mental state have been poor since his injury. He doesn’t have any close elders at home, and this marriage was something I personally arranged—for the sake of his health.”
“When you arrive… try to take the initiative. He’s been through a lot over the years. His temperament might be a bit difficult, but since you’re already registered, you’re family now.” Xi Songkai had a smile on his face, but he sighed softly. “His health is in bad shape, and he really needs the soothing effects of mental power. The fact that you two matched on the first try suggests your compatibility should be high, so…”
The latter part of his words went unspoken. After all, mental soothing between alphas and omegas requires establishing a bond. Whether it’s a temporary or permanent bond, it involves the merging of pheromones between an A and an O, which is a private matter.
But Xi Songkai’s pleading gaze had already conveyed what he left unsaid.
Shi Chan, despite having an entire lifetime of memories from his past, had undergone full omega physiological education in this world and had no desire to discuss such personal matters with someone he’d only met two or three times. He remained silent.
Xi Songkai, knowing this was a private matter, merely hinted at it without waiting for a response from Shi Chan and quickly changed the subject.
Shi Chan continued to feign nervousness and unease to deal with Xi Songkai, but his thoughts began to drift.
The Shi family had been his home for twenty years. Now, he was heading to an unfamiliar residence to marry an alpha he had never interacted with. Shi Chan’s nervousness wasn’t entirely an act.
Although he had maliciously speculated about the Xi family’s motives for marrying an omega to Xi Ming in front of Shi Wen, speculation was just that. So far, apart from Shi Wen’s eagerness to exchange him for resources, no one from the Xi family had privately interacted with him. All the conversations revolved around Xi Ming, urging him to treat Xi Ming well, as if they truly just wanted to find an omega willing to use their mental power to alleviate Xi Ming’s suffering.
Shi Chan couldn’t help but smile bitterly. Other than the Shi family, few would be willing to marry off their omega to an alpha who was rumored to be on the brink of death with a terrible temper.
Still, leaving the Shi family after marriage was the one silver lining amidst all the chaos.
After listening to Xi Songkai’s ramblings for the entire journey, Shi Chan finally arrived at the Xi residence.
“Your belongings have already been placed in your room. Someone inside will show you the way,” Xi Hanrong said as they stopped in front of the Xi family’s old residence.
Shi Chan had packed a few of his personal items before leaving the Shi family, handing them over to Xi Hanrong’s staff, who must have delivered them ahead of time.
Shi Chan tilted his head slightly, his dark, brilliant eyes peering into the old residence, catching glimpses of the scenery inside. He responded politely, “Thank you.”
Xi Hanrong stood still, glancing inside before quickly looking away. After a brief hesitation, he said, “I’ll leave you here.”
Shi Chan, who had expected Xi Hanrong to escort him in, was a little surprised but didn’t question it. “Well then… thank you. I’ll head inside.”
Xi Hanrong nodded, silently watching as Shi Chan walked toward the Xi family’s old residence.
As the gate recognized Shi Chan’s identity and began to open slowly, Xi Hanrong suddenly stepped forward half a pace, almost involuntarily, and called out, “Wait!”
Shi Chan turned back, his face showing a hint of confusion. “Is there something else?”
Xi Hanrong remained silent for a moment, his gaze drifting to the side as his fingers twitched uneasily. With some difficulty, he finally spoke. “You… take good care of my cousin.” Then, without waiting for Shi Chan’s response, he turned and walked away.
After leaving the old residence’s grounds, Xi Hanrong stopped, glanced back in silence, then turned away with a faint sense of despondency.
Shi Chan was still pondering the deeper meaning behind Xi Hanrong’s words when a servant from the Xi family called out to him, breaking his train of thought. He turned and walked into the residence.
Upon seeing Shi Chan’s face, the servant froze for a moment before hurriedly speaking, “Madam, your room has already been prepared. I’ll show you the way.” The beta servant, dressed in a uniform, stole another glance at Shi Chan.
Madam looks so stunning. How did he end up marrying Xi Ming, of all people?
Previously, Xi Ming had driven all the old staff out of the residence. The current staff were all new hires arranged by Xi Songkai, responsible only for basic duties. All they knew was that this omega had married Xi Ming.
The other staff in the courtyard were also visibly astonished by Shi Chan’s looks, sneaking glances at him. Some betas were so captivated they didn’t even notice they’d stopped working.
“Thank you,” Shi Chan said calmly, unfazed by their gazes. He let the servant lead the way and casually struck up a conversation. “What’s your name?”
Hearing the omega address him directly, the ordinary-looking beta’s expression turned visibly excited as he replied, “My surname is Zhang, and my name is Zhang Shiyi. You can just call me Shiyi or Xiao Zhang, Madam.”
“Alright, I’ll call you Shiyi,” Shi Chan said, ignoring the beta’s flustered reaction and asking a few simple questions, which Zhang Shiyi eagerly answered.
In truth, betas rarely had the chance to interact with the scarce omega population in daily life, let alone one as breathtaking as Shi Chan—whose every gesture seemed to captivate the soul.
Though not an alpha, Zhang Shiyi suddenly felt he could understand why alphas were so infatuated with omegas.
The path from the gate to the living quarters wasn’t long, and Shi Chan managed to glean some basic information about the Xi residence along the way.
Assuming the omega was nervous, Zhang Shiyi couldn’t help himself. He glanced around to ensure no one was nearby before leaning in and whispering, “Madam, if you ever run into trouble, make sure to contact the Omega Protection Association.”
Shi Chan smiled faintly. “Thank you, I will.”
That faint smile of his was like a star shining brilliantly in the sky.
Zhang Shiyi, standing close, caught only a glimpse of his radiance out of the corner of his eye, yet it was enough to make his breath catch. In the distance, the sound of gasps could also be heard.
Why was he only a beta? No, perhaps it was fortunate that he was only a beta—a thought that quietly arose in many hearts.
Although the master of the residence rarely left his room, Zhang Shiyi instinctively lightened his footsteps and lowered his voice as they entered the house, leading Shi Chan upstairs in silence. At last, they stopped in front of a room on the second floor. Gently opening the door, Zhang Shiyi said, “Madam, this is your room.”
Sunlight poured through the large, transparent windows, bathing the room in a faint golden glow. The decor seemed oddly familiar.
Shi Chan thought for a moment before recalling that it was one of the styles featured in an article he’d once seen online titled The Top Omega-Favorite Interior Designs.
It seemed like they hadn’t known his personal preferences and had gone with a safe choice. Or, it could simply be a half-hearted gesture.
Shi Chan didn’t care whether the arrangement was perfunctory. Compared to his previous life, where he had to hide in forests and caves while fleeing enemies, this was paradise.
A small smile played on Shi Chan’s lips as he once again appreciated the comfort and security of this era.
“Madam, if you need anything, please feel free to let me know.” Zhang Shiyi stood at the door, his face filled with a mix of nervousness and excitement. “The family head has instructed us that you are now half the master of this household. Everything here is at your disposal. The related permissions and previous financial records should have been transferred to your personal terminal.”
Xi Ming was not involved in household affairs. The expenses of this residence and the staff’s salaries were previously paid by the Xi family head. Now, these matters were handed over to the new madam.
Shi Chan, who had assumed his life here would be frugal, was momentarily stunned. He quickly masked his surprise and nodded. “I understand.”
Even Shi Wen’s wife, Li Manman, hadn’t been given half the Shi family’s permissions, yet the Xi family had handed them over to him without hesitation. Shi Chan couldn’t help but feel a twinge of suspicion.
“This residence doesn’t currently have a housekeeper, so for now, I’m handling these tasks as instructed by the family head. If you need anything, just let me know.” Zhang Shiyi
seemed to be trying to put Shi Chan at ease.
Shi Chan nodded again and said softly, “Thank you for your hard work.”
Zhang Shiyi nearly teared up from gratitude. “It’s no trouble at all! Madam, please don’t hesitate to call me!”
After repeating this three times, Zhang Shiyi finally left reluctantly, closing the door behind him.
Shi Chan remained silent for a moment, then quietly turned and entered the room.
