Chapter 16
A breeze rustled past the window lattice, making a soft swishing sound.
The pearl earrings gently brushed against her earlobes, causing an itch. Xu Yunxi touched them and then looked at the belt. She slowly walked over, took it from his hand, and began to tie his clothes.
Her expression was gentle and serene, and her movements were neither too light nor heavy. It seemed as if she had always been like this, as if they were an ordinary married couple.
It was the first time she had been this close to him, and she noticed how exceptionally tall he was—slender and well-built, with broad shoulders and a narrow waist. The sense of pressure emanated from him, easily enveloping her entire being. Xu Yunxi remained calm, slowly handling his belt. She had never tied one before, so her method was haphazard.
Pei Muheng appeared unfazed, his arms slightly spread, quietly watching her work. The dim light softly reflected off her, highlighting her face framed by her smooth, shiny hair, her long lashes fluttering gently. Her delicate nose and lightly flushed cheeks gave her an added softness and allure.
There was a unique stillness in the room, as if a silent undercurrent was flowing.
Understanding his intention, Xu Yunxi did not struggle with the belt for long. She tied a simple knot and let go.
Pei Muheng, noticing her clumsy attempt, allowed a faint smile to cross his lips.
Xu Yunxi caught the barely perceptible movement. She looked up at him, his clean-cut features accented by his sharp brows and eyes that concealed a hint of danger.
When Pei Muheng’s gaze shifted to her, Xu Yunxi lowered her eyes again.
Xu Yunxi went to rinse her mouth as usual, while Pei Muheng entered the enclosed bed.
Xu Yunxi glanced toward the enclosed bed, then slowly walked to the bathroom. Yin Xing fetched a basin of warm water for her. Standing by the rack, Xu Yunxi slowly brushed her teeth and washed her hands and face, then instructed Yin Xing, “Call Nanny Chen to assist and prepare hot water.”
Yin Xing, not understanding, looked confused but went to follow Xu Yunxi’s instructions. Nanny Chen, preparing for the next day’s breakfast in the back room, understood immediately and said, “You’ve had a long day; rest now. I’ll keep watch tonight.”
Not thinking much of it, Yin Xing yawned and went to her room.
The inner hall was spacious, lit by three palace lamps. Although not bright, they provided enough light to see each other clearly.
Xu Yunxi believed they didn’t need that.
Given the old lady’s earlier inquiry about children, Pei Muheng clearly intended to consummate the marriage that night.
Xu Yunxi blew out the lamps and waited a moment to adjust to the darkness before slowly making her way to the enclosed bed.
The beaded curtain clinked softly, breaking the silence of the inner room.
As Xu Yunxi climbed the steps, she remembered something and asked Pei Muheng, “Third Master, would you like some tea?”
Her voice was soft and gentle, evoking a sense of tenderness.
“I’ve already had some,” Pei Muheng replied warmly.
Xu Yunxi lowered the curtain, plunging the enclosed bed into complete darkness. As she moved onto the bed, she instinctively reached for the thin quilt but suddenly felt a wrist instead.
Xu Yunxi froze and quickly let go. She had clearly placed the quilt there, but he had moved it aside.
Pei Muheng’s hand still retained a faint warmth and itchiness. He calmly said, “Sleep.”
In the mountain air of April, a hint of moisture floated in the night. Xu Yunxi was accustomed to having the thin quilt over her chest, and with it moved aside, she didn’t know how to sleep.
As her slender figure lay down, a large hand covered her.
Xu Yunxi’s body tensed for a moment, then slowly relaxed. She had actually been prepared for this for a long time. This wasn’t unfamiliar to her. When she was in her early teens, studying medical books, she learned about the intimacy between husband and wife. Back then, curiosity outweighed everything else. Later, while accompanying her grandfather on medical visits, she saw some naïve girls who blindly gave themselves away, causing irreversible consequences, and her curiosity vanished. Later still, she even helped treat such conditions.
The intimacy between husband and wife is a natural human inclination, like eating and drinking.
Xu Yunxi was calm and cooperative.
Pei Muheng, born of noble lineage, understood what a legitimate heir meant for him. She even understood that if he hadn’t had his cleanliness obsession and needed time to adapt, their consummation wouldn’t have been delayed until now.
Pei Muheng held her slender waist, looking at her pure and gentle face. His movements were unhurried. He was never one to easily reveal his true intentions, yet he skillfully navigated this progression.
The unfamiliar bed, the unfamiliar touch, intense friction, and mingling scents. There was no verbal communication, but they cooperated seamlessly, both maintaining their composure.
Xu Yunxi’s slender fingers gripped the edge of the bed and the mattress tightly, her eyes glancing toward the curtain. Suddenly, she unexpectedly met his dark gaze. She froze for a moment, then quickly looked away and took a deep breath.
As he slowly advanced, the heat spread from her neck to her ears, and her white teeth gently bit down, making no sound. In that moment, his gaze was calm and even peaceful, never revealing too much, while she suppressed her instincts, maintaining the tranquility.
There was an undercurrent of molten heat, breaths mingling in the confined space, yet somehow maintaining a delicate balance. Neither looked at the other, and neither bowed their head.
Outside, fireworks reached their peak, and the cheers of young girls filled the air, effectively masking the rising intensity within the curtain.
By the time it ended, the palace’s bustle had begun to wind down, with a few drunken officials causing a bit of noise here and there.
Xu Yunxi leaned against the corner, her clothes soaked, slowly wiping the fine sweat from her face.
Pei Muheng sat across from her, draping a black outer garment over his well-built frame. His deep, dark eyes swept over his wife. Xu Yunxi’s head was lowered, her face flushed from the heat, and her sweaty hair clung to her forehead. She looked weak and exhausted.
“You’ve worked hard.” His voice was rough as if scorched by a rushing current.
Xu Yunxi mumbled, her throat almost unable to make a sound. She shook her head and finally whispered, “I’m fine…”
Pei Muheng looked at her silently for a moment, said nothing more, and lifted the curtain to go to the bathroom.
As soon as he left, the evening breeze swept in, cooling her flushed face. Xu Yunxi exhaled slowly and glanced at her hand in the faint light from outside.
He usually appeared gentle and refined, never losing his temper or raising his voice at her. She thought he would be a gentleman in such matters. In fact, he was accommodating and restrained. But in that final moment of overwhelming passion, he suddenly pressed against her, his hands gripping her slender arms, his fingertips smoothing out the bumps on her skin, and finally pinning her hands so she couldn’t move. That moment nearly took her breath away.
Hearing the sound of water from the bathroom, Xu Yunxi moved her body as she got out of bed. The soreness and fatigue were overwhelming, and she clung to the bedpost for a while before she could walk.
The bathroom in the west annex was luxurious and spacious, with a screen in the middle. Xu Yunxi wrapped herself in her clothes and went to where Nanny Chen was already waiting. Seeing Xu Yunxi’s slight sway, Nanny Chen immediately stepped forward to support her.
Pei Muheng was in the next room, so the two of them remained silent.
Xu Yunxi struggled to step into the bathtub, and Nanny Chen carefully examined her back. Her fair skin was flushed with a faint red from sweating, but there were no excessive marks, which reassured her.
Indeed, the third young master was like a celestial being, not someone who would do anything out of line.
Soon, the couple cleaned themselves up and returned to the inner hall.
Nanny Chen personally lit the lamps and tidied up the bed while Pei Muheng and Xu Yunxi sat on either side of the desk. As Pei Muheng drank tea, he poured a cup for his wife.
Xu Yunxi sipped her dry lips, took the cup, and whispered, “Thank you…”
Pei Muheng recalled her earlier appearance, her delicate face covered in sweat like a flower drenched in rain, still unwilling to utter a sound.
His wife was even more composed than he had imagined.
At that moment, Nanny Chen emerged with the bedding, a sticky patch of blood flashing briefly. Xu Yunxi’s face turned awkward for a moment, and she gripped her teacup, lowering her head to drink. Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed the man across from her, sitting upright and unmoving, like an immovable mountain.
Soon, Nanny Chen finished tidying up and curtsied to the two of them, and Xu Yunxi knew everything was in order. She lifted her skirt and headed to the bed.
The lamps were extinguished, and they each embraced their quilts, silently sleeping.
As dawn broke, Pei Muheng woke up as usual, his body signaling its wakefulness like a thirsty beast. He glanced sideways at his wife, Xu Yunxi, whose delicate face was turned towards him. Her hair was messily piled on the pillow, her cheeks flushed with a rosy hue, and her arm, slender like a willow branch, peeked out from under the quilt, resting on her chest.
Knowing that indulgence harms the body, Pei Muheng, usually self-restrained, suppressed the thought without hesitation. For the first time, seeing the person sleeping beside him, he truly felt the reality of having a wife.
After a moment of silence, Pei Muheng gently tucked the quilt around his wife and quietly got out of bed.
They had never slept together before, so Xu Yunxi wasn’t accustomed to attending to his morning routine, and Pei Muheng didn’t wake her.
As usual, Pei Muheng disappeared without a trace after waking up.
Xu Yunxi rubbed her sore arm, looking at the unfamiliar bed. Flashes of sensual scenes crossed her mind, but she showed no extra expression and called for her maid to wash and dress.
Yesterday, the envoy arrived at the palace. To dampen the envoy’s spirit, the Emperor did not summon them immediately but instead instructed Prince Qin to host a banquet. This morning, the Great Wu envoys formally met the Emperor. Pei Muheng, along with several princes and officials, gathered in Qiankun Palace.
The third prince of Great Wu presented three Ferghana horses, a giant jade mountain carved from Hetian jade with the character for longevity, and dozens of chests filled with gold and silver treasures from the Western Regions to celebrate the Emperor’s birthday. Afterward, the two countries exchanged their national documents.
The Emperor held the document from Great Wu and made no immediate comment, only instructing them to rest.
At lunch, the Emperor had some porridge while frowning at the document and called upon several high-ranking officials for discussion. The document was first handed to Prince Qin, who examined it closely and then shook his head,
“They are asking for too much. They want 100,000 bales of raw silk, 100,000 piculs of tea, and various medicinal herbs. This is outrageous! Are they the ones seeking peace, or are we?”
Lord Wen, standing nearby, smiled wryly, “Although we gave them a hard blow this time, they know we are running out of resources, so they dare to make such demands.”
Prince Qin’s face darkened, “This document must be returned for revision. If they want peace talks, they must show sincerity.”
Yan Ping asked Lord Wen, “What are their conditions?”
Lord Wen was the commander-in-chief of the Northern Expedition army and was responsible for overseeing the peace talks.
Lord Wen replied, “They offered 30,000 war horses, 50,000 pelts, some musk and medicinal herbs, and proposed establishing a market at the fortress north of Xuanzhou.”
The terrains of the two countries are different, and they both lack certain medicinal herbs. The exchange of herbs is reasonable, but war horses and pelts are different. Pelts can be used to forge armor, and war horses are a crucial resource for the Jin Dynasty. However, the court was not satisfied with the quantities offered by Great Wu.
Prince Qin said, “We must increase the stakes. In my opinion, we should demand 100,000 war horses and 150,000 pelts. These two items are non-negotiable; if they disagree, we should send the envoy back.”
Prince Qin’s words were out of frustration.
Xiao Yu asked Lord Wen, “If we return the document with Prince Qin’s demands, what will Great Wu do? Will they tear up the peace agreement and prepare for war?”
Xiao Yu, being a civil official, did not understand the situation at the border.
Lord Wen exchanged a glance with the Emperor, not immediately responding.
Currently, Great Wu still had military strength, while the Jin Dynasty did not. If a fight broke out, it was uncertain who would suffer more.
Pei Muheng discerned some clues from Lord Wen’s expression and smiled faintly, “Given that Great Wu still has military strength, have you considered why they proposed peace talks? Is it really just because of the Jin Dynasty’s might?”
The Emperor looked at his grandson, “Heng’er, did you learn something while receiving the Great Wu envoy?”
Pei Muheng bowed and replied, “In response to Grandfather, I pretended to be drunk the other night and overheard that the Qiqihar River in the north of Great Wu had an unusual drought. Great Wu is likely experiencing a drought.”
The Emperor was shocked, “So that’s it!”
Prince Qin clapped his hands and laughed, “In that case, we must adopt a tough stance and force them to agree to our terms and provide 100,000 war horses.”
But it wasn’t that simple.
After returning the document with Prince Qin’s demands, the third prince of Great Wu, as if anticipating this, made a request. “With His Majesty’s birthday approaching, why don’t we have a martial arts competition between our two countries to celebrate?”
The Jin Dynasty couldn’t show weakness, so they had to agree to the request.
However, in private, Lord Wen gravely told the Emperor, “Your Majesty, this is their delaying tactic, intending to use the competition to intimidate Jin. It seems they are well-prepared for this competition.”
The several high-ranking officials then fervently discussed how to arrange their troops to give the opponent a formidable show of force.
Yet, the Emperor’s brow remained furrowed.
After dismissing the others, leaving only Lord Wen and Yan Ping, and under the pretext of handling official documents, he kept Pei Muheng behind.
Pei Muheng sat nearby, helping the Emperor review documents and organize the memos.
Seeing the Emperor’s displeased expression, Lord Wen spoke directly,
“Your Majesty, it seems clear that Great Wu’s objective is not peace talks.”
The Emperor shook his head and threw the competition petition onto the ground. “They are not here for peace talks; they come under the guise of peace talks to demand things from me. I can’t swallow this. Lord Wen, I ask you, if we really fight, can the Jin Dynasty withstand it?”
Lord Wen showed a bitter expression, stood up, and cupped his hands, “Your Majesty, if we truly fight, we can fight, but the people will suffer.”
“But we can’t just let them pinch our noses!” The Emperor stood up from the table, angered.
Yan Ping stood up with him and pondered, “Your Majesty, no matter what, we must deal with the peace talks for now and not let them lead us by the nose. They want to compete; we accompany them, but next, we don’t rush into peace talks. Let them eat, drink, and be merry in the palace and see who can outlast whom.”
After hearing this, the Emperor’s face looked better, “This idea is good. Let’s do it.”
Lord Wen looked out at the night and sighed deeply, “But this is not a long-term solution.”
After all, the national treasury is empty, and military supplies are insufficient.
The Emperor’s expression became more serious upon hearing this. Suddenly, he saw Pei Muheng meticulously sorting documents and asked, “Heng’er, you went to Yangzhou. How did it go?”
Both Yan Ping and Lord Wen looked at Pei Muheng.
Pei Muheng got up, walked to the Emperor, and bowed, “Grandfather Emperor, I sent you a memorial upon my return to camp. Did you forget to look at it?”
The Emperor rubbed his forehead, glanced at the desk as if searching for the memorial, and then seemed to remember, “You mentioned reforming the salt policy?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
Pei Muheng bowed and said seriously, “The court has always implemented the salt license system. Merchants buy salt licenses from the court, get salt from the salt fields, and then distribute it to designated prefectures and counties. The court gets the money, which is collected into the national treasury for various state affairs.”
“But now that military supplies are tight and transportation is poor, I have an idea.”
“What idea?” The Emperor looked at him expectantly.
Pei Muheng said, “Open the middle!”
Lord Wen and Yan Ping exchanged a look, not understanding the meaning.
Pei Muheng explained, “Merchants will transport grain to designated fortresses at the border and will be given salt licenses in return. The merchants then take the salt licenses back to the salt fields to exchange for salt, which they will distribute again. This will save the court the trouble of transporting grain and also bolster the border, greatly solving the issue of insufficient military supplies.”
The hall fell silent.
The sky in the mountains darkened quickly, and soon dusk had fallen. The chief eunuch gently lit a palace lamp.
The study suddenly became bright.
The Emperor stared at him, chewing over his words repeatedly in his mind, realizing the key points. His thin, long arms lifted but could not find support for a moment. Yan Ping, who was closest, noticed and extended his hand. The Emperor gripped his palm tightly, finding support, and his eyes filled with excitement, “Brilliant.”
Yan Ping was also very excited and sincerely praised, “Truly brilliant. This method is more efficient and spares the court the hardship of buying and distributing grain. The third young master is extraordinarily wise, a rarity in the world.”
Lord Wen also clapped the table and exclaimed, “Your Majesty, quickly send the third young master to the Ministry of War. With him there, I will have no worries leading the troops into battle.”
The Emperor showed a proud smile, “Hahaha.”
After a moment of happiness, the Emperor thought of the troublesome Great Wu delegation and sighed again, “But distant water cannot quench present thirst.”
Pei Muheng expected the Emperor to say this and smiled, “Therefore, I have a second plan.”
“Oh? Quickly, tell us!”
Lord Wen and Yan Ping helped the Emperor sit behind the desk, and the three looked at him expectantly.
Pei Muheng said, “Your Majesty should know that our Jin and Meng Wu have always had trade relations. Every year, these merchants follow the court’s regulations to send raw silk and tea to Meng Wu. However, you also know that the court’s quota is far from enough to meet Meng Wu’s needs. Therefore, these merchants secretly smuggle raw silk and tea to Meng Wu and sell them at high prices to make a profit.”
“So?”
“So, I suggest issuing an order to send people to the bridgehead fortress and retrieving large trade records from the past five years to find the list of merchants. By accusing them of colluding with foreign enemies, we can confiscate their goods, cut off Meng Wu’s supply, and gain an advantage in negotiations. This will also enrich our treasury and prepare for military supplies.”
The Emperor listened and took a deep breath.
Lord Wen clapped his hands and laughed, “Good strategy, good tactics. As expected of the Emperor’s grandson.”
Yan Ping also agreed deeply and thought for a moment before saying, “Your Majesty, if we need to investigate, I can offer a direction.”
“Oh?”
“When I was observing governance at the Ministry of Household, I remembered that there are many merchants in the Jinzhou area who specialize in doing business with the Meng Wu people. They not only buy and sell raw silk, salt, and tea to Meng Wu but also secretly smuggle gunpowder there.”
Jinzhou is rich in coal and saltpeter, and the majority of Jin Dynasty’s gunpowder is produced there.
Pei Muheng, hearing this, glanced lightly at Yan Ping.
Pei Muheng had some awareness of what Prince Qin was doing in private. At this moment, the Prime Minister subtly redirected the Emperor’s attention to Jinzhou, which was an excellent move. In this way, if the crown prince’s affairs were exposed in the future, he would also be implicated. As expected of the Prime Minister, using power to leverage power, playing it to perfection.
The Emperor nodded, “With a direction, it will be easier to investigate. But as for the candidate…”
Pei Muheng immediately bowed and said, “Your Majesty, as for the candidate, I have also thought of one for you.”
“Oh, go on.”
Pei Muheng smiled and looked at Yan Ping, lightly uttering three words, “Yan Shaoling.”
Yan Ping was slightly stunned.
The Emperor stroked his chin and pondered, “Yan Shaoling?”
Lord Wen interjected, “Your Majesty, Young Master Shaoling has always been somewhat spirited. He is the perfect candidate to investigate the merchants in Jinzhou.”
The Emperor laughed heartily, “Indeed, I haven’t seen that boy in a long time. Is he still as lively?”
Yan Ping smiled wryly, “What spirit? It’s more like he has some roguishness. This task is suitable for him, but I fear he may not live up to your expectations.”
The Emperor, his worries eased, comfortably leaned back and said to Yan Ping, “We are getting old. It’s time to let the young people have some experience.”
Yan Ping met the Emperor’s meaningful smile, slowly squinted his eyes, and gradually bent down, saying, “Then I thank Your Majesty on behalf of that unworthy lad for your great kindness.”
*
That night, Pei Muheng returned late, and the next day, the two countries’ soldiers competed. Pei Muheng left early again, and the couple did not see each other.
Pei Mushan set off first for the military training ground, leaving a message for Xu Yunqi to find her later. After breakfast, Xu Yunqi hurried to the training ground.
Princess Consort Xi didn’t know where she had gone. Madam Li and Pei Mulan were watching the excitement with two children under the brocade canopy. Fourth Miss Pei Mulan saw her approaching and made room. Xu Yunqi sat between the two of them.
At a glance, Pei Mushan could be seen wearing a fiery red outfit, shouting at the martial training ground in front of the crowd. “Hit him! Jab under his armpit, yes! That’s the way to do it!”
“Wait, wait, hey, don’t hit the face, such a beautiful face, oh my…” Pei Mushan sighed, covering her forehead.
Madam Li, hugging her son, laughed so hard that she couldn’t catch her breath.
Xu Yunqi, not knowing what was going on, asked, “What’s happening?”
In the center of the martial training ground, a young man dressed in barbarian attire was being pinned to the ground by a strong and imposing man from Jin Dynasty. The man was wearing a bright brocade robe, with eyebrows like sword sheaths, exuding a powerful presence. It was evident that he was no ordinary person, and the entire crowd of officials’ family members was cheering for him, except for Pei Mushan, who sighed regretfully.
Seeing her sister-in-law Madam Li laughing so hard, Pei Mulan took over the explanation, “Just now, a young prince from the Great Wu delegation arrived with a pair of amber-like blue eyes. Sister was so stunned at first sight that she cheered for him. Then, Young Master Yan Shaoling from the Yan family saw this and volunteered to fight him. Now, that young prince has been defeated by Young Master Shaoling, and Sister is lamenting over his face.”
Xu Yunqi couldn’t help but laugh.
Pei Mushan had this habit of being infatuated with looks.
Pei Mulan whispered in her ear, “Young Master Yan from the Yan family likes our fifth sister.”
Oh, so that’s how it is.
Xu Yunqi then carefully observed Yan Shaoling. The young man was around twenty years old, composed and unhurried, exuding a strong aura, with a bold and free expression between his eyebrows. It was evident that he was a noble from the capital who had ridden through the streets.
“And what about our sister?”
Pei Mulan laughed softly, “Our sister thinks he isn’t as good-looking as our third brother and refused the Yan family’s proposal.”
Xu Yunqi: “…”
This Yan Shaoling was already quite handsome, but Pei Muheng’s influence on their sister was strong.
Halfway through the competition, the third prince of Great Wu had consecutively defeated three brave generals of the Jin Dynasty, creating a tense situation. The Emperor was asking who dared to step up and fight. Finally, the other side named the Twelfth Prince Pei Xun to duel. Both were legitimate royal sons with renowned reputations. The third prince wanted to compete with him and suppress the pride of the Jin Dynasty’s legitimate royal sons.
The Twelfth Prince Pei Xun accepted the challenge.
The idle prince, nearly thirty years old, gracefully entered the field with an injury. The crowd erupted in applause when he leaped onto the horse from the imperial steps.
Xu Yunqi then learned that the Twelfth Prince was very popular among the young ladies.
Madam Li told her, “Sister-in-law, you might not know, but the twelfth prince is known as the best archer in Jin Dynasty. With him entering the field, there’s no chance of losing.”
Pei Mulan interjected worriedly, “But I heard the Twelfth Uncle is injured.”
Before Madam Li could respond, Pei Mushan, standing by the martial training ground fence, loudly replied, “Even if the Twelfth Uncle is injured, he can still defeat the opponent soundly!”
Apart from studying medicine, Xu Yunqi most wanted to learn archery. For a young lady, having archery skills could be useful for self-defense while traveling the world. Unfortunately, her grandfather was not skilled in it. She later found someone to teach her a few techniques, but none were effective. Hearing them speak so highly of the Twelfth Prince, she became curious and, like everyone else, craned her neck to look.
The two of them sat on horseback, facing the sky, drawing their bows together.
The Twelfth Prince Pei Xun’s archery skills were indeed as legendary as they said. He shot the arrow effortlessly; one could hear the arrow tearing through the air with the force of a rainbow, disappearing into the sky. When it was out of sight, suddenly there was the cry of a wild goose. Moments later, everyone saw that the goose, carrying two arrows, fell into the grass.
Great Wu prince had shot through its wing, while Pei Xun’s arrow had shaved off a tuft of feathers from its head, clearly showing the difference in their skills. Especially when Pei Muheng personally went forward to help the slightly limping Pei Xun back, the Great Wu prince’s face looked even worse.
Pei Xun had indeed fought while injured.
Seeing Xu Yunqi’s eyes light up with interest, Madam Li laughed and asked, “Do you like archery?”
Xu Yunqi nodded earnestly.
Madam Li said, “Third Brother’s archery was personally taught by the Twelfth Prince. You can ask him to teach you sometime.” As she said this, her eyebrows hinted at some ambiguity.
Xu Yunqi gave a slight smile. Pei Muheng hardly had the time, and even if he did, he wouldn’t have the inclination.
Madam Li was actually very observant. Having watched their married life coldly these past days, she knew it was respectful but cold. Seeing Xu Yunqi’s lack of response, she assumed she was sad and comforted her, “Life is slowly endured. You don’t know how many people envy you. Last night, Second Brother came back and told me that in the first negotiation between the two countries yesterday afternoon, Third Brother argued so well that the other side was left speechless, giving our Jin Dynasty the upper hand. Did you know about this?”
Xu Yunqi really didn’t know. Pei Muheng never told her about court affairs, and because of his strict rules, it seemed he didn’t want her to talk much either. Madam Li noticed this and felt sympathy, gripping her wrist more tightly and whispering, “He said that both Prince Qin and the Crown Prince want to win over the Third Brother. He has a bright future ahead. He is devoted to court affairs, so you should be more understanding.”
Xu Yunqi couldn’t help but smile, accepting her goodwill, “Thank you, sister-in-law. I understand.”
After the Twelfth Prince’s competition ended, the officials’ family members began to disperse in groups.
Pei Mushan called out to several ladies to play polo while Xu Yunqi returned to the palace with Madam Li. On the way, the two children insisted on going to the water’s edge to watch people practice with water darts, so Madam Li had to ask Pei Mulan to help. Xu Yunqi walked to the palace alone and was stopped on a boardwalk section.
The daughter of the Court Judicial Review Chief, Liu Xiangning, accompanied by two maids, blocked Xu Yunqi’s path. Her face was pale with a hint of blue, and she spoke weakly, “Xu… Madam Xu, did you do it on purpose yesterday?”
Xu Yunqi glanced at her and replied calmly, “Miss Liu, you should have some blisters on your body. If you don’t stay indoors to heal and come out excitedly in the wind, your wounds will easily fester and hurt like ants gnawing, making it hard to sleep day and night…”
Upon hearing this, Liu Xiangning’s anger grew even stronger, and her eyes filled with hatred, “That’s right, today I’ll make you taste this pain…”
She gave a signal, and several guards emerged from the forest on both sides, surrounding Xu Yunqi and Yin Xing together with Liu Xiangning and her servants.
Xu Yunqi glanced coldly at them, clenched the silver needle in her sleeve, and was about to make a move when a voice came from the side path, “How dare you!”
Xu Yunqi looked toward the voice and saw a tall, slender lady with a broad forehead hastily approaching with two maidservants. Her dress billowed in the wind as she took three steps at a time up the steps and stood in front of Xu Yunqi, shouting at Liu Xiangning, “Miss Liu, do you not understand the consequences of your father, the Court Judicial Review Chief, privately hurting others?”
“You were splashed with tea because of the Xiao family. It has nothing to do with Yunqi. If you continue to hold on to this, you won’t know how you’ll end up dead!”
With a cold sneer, Liu Xiangning glanced at the newcomer, “Who are you to ruin my plans?”
The lady seemed unwilling to argue with her, “Who I am is none of your business. If you don’t leave, I’ll call for help!”
Liu Xiangning, seeing her raise her voice, immediately deflated, “Just you wait, I’ll settle the score with you later!” She left in a huff with her people.
*
The mountain wind howled, and the scent of pine covered their faces. Xu Yunqi held a teapot and poured tea for Madam Jiang, who was sitting opposite her. The two sat in a pavilion on the cliff, silently looking at each other.
Xu Yunqi smiled bitterly, “I see the Liu family is not reasonable. Why did you offend the Liu family for me? Her little tricks wouldn’t have hurt me.”
Madam Jiang shook her head, “How could I stand by and watch others hurt you?”
Seeing Xu Yunqi was about to argue further, she raised her hand to grasp Xu Yunqi’s wrist and said warmly, “Good child, have you been well these past six months?”
Xu Yunqi’s eyes flickered slightly, and her smile grew wider, “How could I not be well? I have no worries about food or clothing and am free of any burdens.”
Madam Jiang looked at her bright, moon-like eyes and suddenly choked up, “If only the emperor had not granted the marriage… how wonderful it would have been…” As she spoke, she buried her face and sobbed, her shoulders trembling.
Xu Yunqi’s expression became calm.
A year ago, not long after Xu Yunqi arrived in the capital, she treated an official lady at the Chengyang Medical Hall. That person was Madam Jiang. Later, at a chance banquet, Madam Jiang recognized Xu Yunqi. Hearing that she was the eldest daughter of Lord Xu, an official in the Ministry of Works, she was delighted and privately sent a matchmaker to propose a marriage.
At that time, Xu Yunqi, who was coveted by her eldest brother Xu He, didn’t want to stay in the Xu family, so she agreed to meet Madam Jiang at her mother’s request.
The two of them hit it off immediately. Xu Yunqi saved Madam Jiang’s life, and she grew extremely fond of her. She promptly arranged for Xu Yunqi to meet her only son, Jiang Yuhe. Jiang Yuhe, already feeling grateful towards Xu Yunqi, was even more astonished by her elegant and gentle demeanor when they met.
Thus, the two families decided on the marriage.
The Jiang family, a fourth-rank baronet, had a slightly higher status than the Xu family, but the difference wasn’t significant. It was considered a well-matched marriage. With a loving mother-in-law and a gentle and kind husband, it was an ideal union.
Unfortunately, shortly after the two families exchanged betrothal cards, the Emperor issued a decree for an imperial marriage, ruining the perfect match. Madam Zhang and Madam Jiang nearly cried their hearts out.
For the past six months, whenever Madam Jiang thought of this, she felt deep regret.
Xu Yunqi, unable to bear seeing her like this, quickly comforted her, “Madam, it’s all in the past. We were destined but not fated, and we can do nothing about it. Now, I am doing well and living a stable life. You should also let go and find a good match for Brother Jiang.”
When Jiang Yuhe was mentioned, Madam Jiang cried even more, her fingers trembling. She wanted to pour out her heart but held back, considering that Xu Yunqi was now married. Words stuck in her throat, and she only sobbed silently.
After a while, Madam Jiang composed herself, wiped her tears, and smiled at Xu Yunqi, asking, “Is the third young master treating you well?”
Xu Yunqi, not wanting her to worry, quickly replied, “Very well, indeed. Don’t be deceived by his cold exterior; he is warm-hearted inside. He is very generous with me, always bringing back precious gifts when he goes out. Our relationship is harmonious. As for my mother-in-law, although we don’t always get along, she never mistreats me, and my sister-in-law is even better.”
Xu Yunqi said this to reassure Madam Jiang and to make Jiang Yuhe give up hope.
However, Madam Jiang looked at her with pity, her eyes filled with tears, “Yunqi, do you think I don’t know your character? These words might fool your mother, but not me. I trust the third young master’s character, but as for a loving relationship, that’s a different matter.”
“There may be grievances at home, but you still have to endure cold looks and gossip outside. If you were married into the Jiang family, everyone would have treated you like a treasure. That would have been wonderful.”
Seeing that she couldn’t convince her, Xu Yunqi playfully shook her arm, “Are you still taking the medicine I prescribed?”
“Yes, I am.”
“By the way, how is Brother Jiang?”
“If I say he’s well, would you believe me?”
It was almost the time of the Shen hour; the sun was leaning towards the west, and the wind in the forest was unceasing.
Xu Yunqi and Yin Xing, master and servant, walked hand in hand towards the palace ahead.
The undulating wind sent waves of grass rippling toward the foot of the palace, and Xu Yunqi, seeing this from afar, felt a sense of refreshment.
Yin Xing had not yet recovered from Madam Jiang’s words, and her expression was low. “The Jiang family was the best choice for you, Miss. Madam Jiang supports your practice of medicine, understands your background, and would only respect you. She would never compare you to any other noble girls. And Young Master Jiang truly is the best person in the world. Not long after meeting you, he brought you all the snacks from the capital, and his heart and eyes were filled with you…”
For a moment, Yin Xing had despaired, wondering if the heavens had forgotten her mistress, with happiness slipping away each time it was within reach. Loving parents once, now a well-matched marriage.
Hearing the maid’s words, Xu Yunqi stopped walking. Seeing the wind ruffle her hair, she adjusted it casually and said with a serene expression, “Yin Xing, good or bad, it is hard to sum up in a few words. Some husbands are capable and can support their wives and earn respect. Others are loving and considerate at home but unreliable outside. One cannot expect to have all the benefits. Everything has its advantages and disadvantages. Once something has happened, don’t dwell on whether it was good or bad. What we need to do is accept it. People should not be obsessed with the past nor worry about the future that has not yet come.”
“Live in the present.”

Though the Twelfth Prince turned the tide in the competition between the two countries, the capabilities shown by the Great Wu soldiers alarmed the Jin Dynasty. At the negotiation table, the Great Wu delegation remained tough. Following Yan Ping’s strategy, the Emperor kept them at a distance. He had Prince Qin, Prince Chen, and the Twelfth Prince entertain the envoys in turns, but he himself did not appear.
Pei Muheng was highly efficient. In one day, he retrieved the documents from the substation at the bridgehead, revealing that most of the merchants were indeed from Jinzhou. Thus, Yan Shaoling was dispatched overnight to Jinzhou in the south to handle the case.
The next two days, everyone was quite idle.
In groups of twos and threes, the girls followed their brothers up the mountain to hunt. On this particular day, Pei Mushan wanted to invite Xu Yunqi to play polo, but Xu Yunqi, thinking about making a set of rouge for her, declined, “I’m not feeling well, you go ahead.” She wanted to surprise her sister-in-law.
Pei Mushan, hearing that she wasn’t feeling well, got worried, “Shall I call a doctor for you?”
Xu Yunqi helplessly replied, “It’s nothing serious, I’ll be fine after a rest.”
Seeing that she looked fine, Pei Mushan didn’t take it to heart, “Alright then, I’ll win a few prizes for you to choose from.”
Xu Yunqi watched her leave and then returned to her room. She had just sat down when she heard steady footsteps outside.
It was Pei Muheng.
It was just after the initial quarter of the Si hour, and at this time, he should either be by the Emperor’s side or at the martial training ground. Could he have forgotten something?
Xu Yunqi greeted him, surprised.
Pei Muheng walked in quickly, scrutinizing her expression, “My sister said you were not feeling well.”
Xu Yunqi was stunned.
Hesitating whether to nod, she heard his somewhat obscure tone, “Did I hurt you?”
Xu Yunqi was completely flustered, embarrassment creeping up her body and turning her skin red. Last night, Pei Muheng had returned late, and she had fallen asleep groggily. It wasn’t until the early morning that he suddenly pressed her and did that, leaving her bones still tingling.
Pei Muheng had obviously misunderstood.
Xu Yunqi pointed at the rouge on the table, “I wanted to make some rouge for my sister, so I used it as an excuse to refuse her.”
Her expression was gentle.
Pei Muheng’s deep eyes were fixed on her, unmoving.
Xu Yunqi had to clutch her handkerchief tightly, replying steadily, “I’m really fine.”
Pei Muheng responded softly, glancing at the bright sky outside, “Since you’re fine, let me take you out for a walk.”
“Ah…” Xu Yunqi was stunned, as if such words shouldn’t have come from his mouth.
Is he really that idle? Her husband’s sudden kindness caught her off guard.
Pei Muheng smiled gracefully, “These days, there’s no rush for negotiations. His Majesty granted me leave and somehow mentioned you, saying I should accompany you. You’ve been here for so long and haven’t had a proper outing. Let me take you up the mountain.”
Aside from his assertiveness in the bedroom, he was usually very gentle.
Xu Yunqi, feeling complicated, nodded.
Pei Muheng also had a reason for leaving today. With Prince Qin’s plan nearing completion, it was time for him to lay low for a while. The last time Xu Yunqi was publicly reprimanded, she must have felt stifled. Taking advantage of the fine weather today, he decided to take her out, letting people know they were harmonious, dispelling those rumors.
Since she followed him, he couldn’t let her suffer.
Xu Yunqi went into the hall to change into a more convenient outfit. When she came out, Pei Muheng stared at her for a long time. She was wearing an apricot-colored long robe, with her pants tucked into black deerskin boots, looking clean and crisp. A blue silk belt around her waist accentuated her slender figure, making her appear tall and elegant with a touch of heroism.
“What’s wrong?” She touched her cheek, thinking there was something amiss.
Pei Muheng shook his head and led her forward, “Nothing is wrong.”
The couple walked in front, with Yin Xing and two secret guards behind them. Before long, they arrived at the stables. The guard brought out Pei Muheng’s usual horse, Wu Ti. Pei Muheng mounted the horse and extended his hand to Xu Yunqi, “I’ll take you.”
Xu Yunqi glanced at the vast grassland in the distance, excitement faintly visible in her eyes, “Third Master, can I ride by myself?”
Pei Muheng was slightly taken aback, “You can ride a horse?”
Xu Yunqi smiled, “A little.”
Pei Muheng dismounted and went to the stable, picking a gentle pony suitable for a lady.
Xu Yunqi mounted the horse, rode a few steps to get accustomed, and then headed out.
The palace was built halfway up the mountain. From the stables in front of the palace, a vast, lush field stretched out for miles. Xu Yunqi rode for a while, her cheeks flushed from the bumpy ride, but she never gave up easily. She firmly gripped the reins, gradually taming the horse. When she looked back, she saw that man sitting elegantly on his horse, following her at a leisurely pace, exuding a serene and majestic aura.
Although she suspected Pei Muheng’s company might have an ulterior motive, she was still delighted. She hadn’t ridden for fun in a long time.
Xu Yunqi continued to ride forward.
After some distance, the horse passed through a forest and reached a damp area. Xu Yunqi grew tired and spread a grass mat on the hilltop to rest. Riding for a long time, her legs felt sore. Pei Muheng dismounted gracefully, found a water pouch, and handed it to her.
Both were not talkative, sitting silently on the hill, appreciating the view below.
The temperature here was noticeably warmer than outside. Surrounded by dense forests, filled with birds and flowers, there was also a lake below, emitting steamy hot air, indicating geothermal activity.
Xu Yunqi was familiar with various landscapes, knowing that geothermal forests often harbored rare medicinal herbs, some living creatures, and some plants.
A person familiar with the mountains and forests has a natural sense of alertness. Xu Yunqi keenly sensed something, quietly set down the water pouch, and gently brushed aside the grass leaves hidden under the shrubbery, observing her surroundings.
Pei Muheng didn’t know what she was doing and was about to speak when suddenly a flash of green light shot towards Xu Yunqi. Pei Muheng’s heart almost leaped into his throat. He instinctively pulled his wife behind him while simultaneously drawing his soft sword from his sleeve and striking at the green light.
However, someone was faster than him.
Pei Muheng hadn’t even clearly seen her movements when he saw a two-inch-long green snake lightly grasped in Xu Yunqi’s hand.
Pei Muheng: “…”
This was an extremely rare green vine snake, small in size and medicinal. Xu Yunqi had only seen it once before in the hands of a herbalist in Xiangxi. She had sensed danger around her earlier but hadn’t expected to catch such a rare green vine snake. Xu Yunqi was in a great mood, holding the little snake, which she had anesthetized with a silver needle, and turned around with a smile.
Pei Muheng looked at her with an indescribable expression. The fear of her being hurt had not yet subsided, and his face was pale with a tinge of green.
Seeing his cold expression, Xu Yunqi’s smile froze on her face. She glanced down at the little snake in her hand, realizing something belatedly. Her expression turned awkward, and she wanted to explain but didn’t know where to start. Lowering her eyes in disappointment for a moment, she finally turned around slowly and carefully wrapped the little snake in the cloth pouch she carried.
Pei Muheng watched his wife turn away silently. His gaze passed over her slender shoulder, clearly seeing her every move, which was practiced and familiar, indicating she did this often.
Pei Muheng swallowed hard, taking a deep breath.
What kind of wife had he married? He realized he had never really gotten to know her.
