Chapter 35
Though it was the height of summer, Madam Xun felt like she were in an ice cellar, her lips turning slightly blue.
Old nanny stood by her side and pinched her hard, whispering, “The birthdates are different. She can’t deduce anything from just this.”
Madam Xun took a deep breath, relieved that when Xun Yu changed his name, he also changed his birthdate. Otherwise, with the surname Xun, both from Jingzhou and sharing the same birthdate, Madam Zhang might have come to confront them.
However, she couldn’t understand how Xun Yunhe, who cherished his wife and daughter, could have completely severed ties with his past.
Madam Xun forced herself to calm down and slowly smiled. “Quickly, bring them in.”
The ladies present noticed Madam Xun’s unease but attributed it to her aversion to Xu Yunqi, Pei Muheng’s wife.
“What kind of family allows their daughter to study medicine?” one lady couldn’t help but sneer.
“Only a lowly family would do such shameless things.”
Madam Xun hastily intervened, “Guests are guests. Please, no more of this.” She thought to herself that that Xu Yunqi was rightfully the eldest daughter of the Xun family, with Xun Yunqi’s memorial tablet still in the ancestral hall.
Everyone saw Madam Xun’s magnanimity.
The Xun family courtyard wasn’t spacious, and the main hall couldn’t accommodate so many people. Madam Xun decorated the flower hall and brought the guests there—green vines draped around the hall, with ice basins in the corners. Maids stood with large fans to keep the air cool.
The guests didn’t mind the narrow space, praising Xun Yunhe’s integrity and the charming scenery.
Xu Yunqi and her mother, Madam Zhang, entered the flower hall at this moment. All eyes turned to them. Madam Li immediately stood to welcome them, gesturing to a seat beside her.
“Third Sister-in-law, I saved a place for you and Madam Zhang.”
Madam Xun couldn’t help but examine Madam Zhang’s face. It was her first time seeing her. During the great fire, she only saw a young woman rush out of the house towards a child with a silver bracelet, assuming it was Madam Zhang and Xu Yunqi. Little did she know she had killed the wrong person.
Madam Zhang’s face was undeniably beautiful, with soft eyebrows and an elegant charm. While not as stunning as Xun Yunhe, she was a simple woman from the countryside with little talent. Madam Xun couldn’t understand why Xun Yunhe held this woman so dearly in his heart. Feeling superior, Madam Xun straightened her back. She then looked at Xu Yunqi, who bore a strong resemblance to her father, inheriting the best features from both parents, making her even more striking.
Before Madam Zhang could approach, Madam Xun greeted them with a bow, “It’s an honor to have the County Princess and Madam Zhang here. Please, have a seat.”
To the others, Madam Xun’s gesture appeared dignified and gracious.
Madam Zhang still harbored resentment towards Madam Xun’s daughter for coveting her son-in-law, showing little interest in Madam Xun. She returned a casual greeting and sat down.
Madam Li had recently become very close to Xu Yunqi and was warm and attentive to Madam Zhang. Once Madam Li was called away by a friend, Madam Zhang finally had a moment to chat with Xu Yunqi.
“Your birthday is coming up on the fifteenth of next month. Is the Prince’s residence planning to celebrate it?” Madam Zhang asked.
Xu Yunqi shook her head. “I don’t plan to celebrate.”
Madam Zhang assumed the Prince’s residence was neglecting her daughter, showing displeasure. “If your father were alive… Your birthdays would be grand celebrations.”
Xu Yunqi was born on the same day as Xun Yu’s birthday. He had always regarded his daughter as the greatest gift from the heavens, cherishing her like a precious gem. He named her “Yunqi” after pondering poetry for three days, hoping she would soar like an eagle. He couldn’t bear to call her by her full name, affectionately calling her “Nannan” all day long, fearing she’d melt in his mouth or fall from his hands, raising Xu Yunqi to be fearless.
Looking at her calm and serene daughter now, Madam Zhang’s eyes welled up with tears.
Soon, Madam Xun welcomed several more distinguished guests, including Lord Wen’s wife and her daughter, Wen Ruyu. Although married into the Duke’s household, Wen Ruyu often accompanied her mother on outings. Her presence livened up the gathering. She chatted easily with everyone and familiarly asked Xu Yunqi, “Where’s Shanshan?”
People often regarded Noble Consort Yan, Wen Ruyu, and Pei Mushan as the most illustrious young ladies of their respective generations. All three were outstanding in talent and beauty, with similar temperaments. Noble Consort Yan particularly admired Wen Ruyu, who in turn adored Pei Mushan. Without Pei Mushan, Wen Ruyu felt less enthusiastic.
Before Xu Yunqi could respond, Madam Li answered, “The Xiao family also has a banquet today, so Shanshan went there.”
Wen Ruyu understood immediately.
Meanwhile, Madam Xun, on edge, ordered the servants to guard the entrance and ensure that Xun Yunhe wouldn’t see Madam Zhang and Xu Yunqi.
In a moment, as everyone was chatting, they heard some unusual commotion outside the side gate. Wen Ruyu vaguely recognized her husband’s voice, growing suspicious. At that moment, an elderly maid hurriedly entered the flower hall and approached Wen Ruyu, saying, “Madam, when our Lord stepped out of the carriage to offer birthday wishes, a woman clung to him. She is causing a scene at the front of the residence now.”
Wen Ruyu’s heart tightened, and her face turned pale. “Who is she?”
Old Madam Wen, beside her, also heard this and signaled her to stay calm.
Wen Ruyu was one of the best-born girls in the capital, but unfortunately, her marriage was not ideal. The late Lord Wen had been a close friend of the old Duke Chengguo, and they had arranged the marriage early on. When the old Duke passed away a few years ago, his son inherited the title. However, this nearly thirty-year-old Duke Chengguo was a hedonist, often indulging in affairs outside. Wen Ruyu, with her strong-willed nature, could not tolerate this, and the couple had long been estranged. But this was the first time it had reached such public embarrassment at someone else’s birthday banquet. Wen Ruyu felt both ashamed and furious.
Old Madam Wen, accustomed to handling crises, calmly asked the maid, “What exactly is going on?”
The maid replied angrily, “It seems to be a woman involved with the Lord outside, claiming she is pregnant and demanding recognition.”
Before the maid finished speaking, a woman burst through the side gate, “If you can’t make a decision, I’ll ask her. As the legitimate eldest daughter of Lord Wen, can she bear to see her husband’s child abandoned?”
Fortunately, two robust maids promptly restrained her.
This woman had obviously chosen her moment, using the child to pressure Wen Ruyu and her husband for recognition.
Wen Ruyu stood up angrily, raising her long sleeves to scold, but was stopped by Old Madam Wen, who calmed her and said, “Let her in.” Then she turned to Madam Xun and bowed, “I apologize for disturbing your birthday banquet.”
Given the esteemed reputation of Old Madam Wen and Lord Wen, who was also a leading military figure, Madam Xun couldn’t blame them and quickly replied, “It was my lack of preparation that startled the guests. I should be the one to apologize.”
Old Madam Wen nodded appreciatively.
Madam Xun then loudly instructed, “Let her in, but have the other men leave.”
The maids released the woman and allowed her into the courtyard.
Curious, everyone watched as a young girl dressed in peach-pink approached, her tear-filled eyes and fearful expression making her look pitiable. Her attire, though not lavish, was vibrant and reminiscent of the courtesan style.
Anyone would feel sorry for her at first glance, but on closer inspection, the corners of her eyes showed no real fear, revealing her as a woman well-versed in navigating various social circles, with deep cunning.
Old Madam Wen saw through her immediately and calmly asked, “Who are you, and what do you want? Explain yourself.”
The girl knelt in the center of the flower hall, kowtowing several times before tearfully speaking, “My name is Liu, from Taiyuan. I came to the capital with my uncle for business. By chance, I met Duke Chengguo. At the time, I didn’t know his identity. He helped me when I was harassed by street bullies and later supported my uncle’s business during a crisis. He mentioned wanting to marry me, but knowing he had a wife, I refused. Yet one time, I was…”
At this point, she began to cry.
Seeing this, Old Madam Wen scolded her sharply, “How dare you cry at the Chief Cabinet Minister’s birthday banquet? I’ll have you bound and taken to the Capital Prefecture for questioning.”
Terrified, Miss Liu stopped crying abruptly and said, “I was drugged and accidentally ran into him. One thing led to another, and he took advantage of me. Unfortunately, he only wanted my body and refused to bring me into his household. I thought I could repay his kindness, but then I found out I was pregnant. I had no choice but to come here. Please, Madam, have mercy on me and give me a place to stay. I will repay you in any way I can.”
Wen Ruyu laughed coldly, “You weren’t set up; you’re just a thief crying ‘stop thief.'”
Hearing this, Madam Xun’s hands trembled involuntarily under her sleeves, and sweat beaded on her forehead.
Miss Liu didn’t argue. Instead, she spoke softly, “I am at fault for losing my virtue. Madam, you can say whatever you like about me, but please, for the sake of the child, give me a way to survive. I’ve consulted an expert, and this child is a boy. Once he’s born, I’ll hand him over to you and never see him again.”
Wen Ruyu felt a surge of blood rises in her throat. She had only given birth to two daughters and lacked a male heir, which had always been a sore point. Miss Liu’s words hit her right in her weak spot, showing she had come prepared.
With the situation escalating, they had to find a way to resolve it. A good friend at the table offered a suggestion, “Madam Wen, since she’s here, you can’t just throw out the Duke’s child. I think you should take her back to the household and handle it slowly.”
The implication was clear: once inside the household, her fate would be decided by them.
Not wanting to cause a scene at the Chief Cabinet Minister’s banquet, Old Madam Wen furrowed her brows, considering the suggestion. She was about to consult her daughter’s opinion when a soft voice interrupted from the side, “How long have you been pregnant?”
Xu Yunqi’s words immediately caught Old Madam Wen and her daughter’s attention. They exchanged a quick glance and instantly became more alert.
Miss Liu looked toward the voice and saw a gentle and amiable young woman dressed in a moon-white dress. She relaxed her guard and replied softly, “About a little over a month…”
With a smile, Xu Yunqi stepped forward and gently extended her hand, “Your complexion doesn’t look right. I’m afraid you might have disturbed your pregnancy. Please extend your hand and let me check your pulse.”
Upon hearing Xu Yunqi’s words, Miss Liu’s face changed; her throat seemed to tighten, and she stared at Xu Yunqi as if she had seen a ghost.
Wen Ruyu immediately sensed something was off and coldly laughed, “I think your pregnancy is fake, and you’re trying to blackmail us. Someone, hold her down for a pulse check.”
The Wen family’s servants rushed forward, holding Miss Liu in place. She struggled but was no match for the several maids holding her down. She glared viciously at Xu Yunqi.
“Who are you?” she demanded.
Xu Yunqi smiled lightly, her voice cool and eerie, “Me? I’m the ghost catcher.”
Madam Xun gasped.
Xu Yunqi quickly took her pulse and confirmed that the woman was not pregnant but had taken drugs to mimic pregnancy symptoms. Wen Ruyu was relieved and gratefully thanked Xu Yunqi, ordering the woman to be taken away for later handling.
Wen Ruyu bowed to Xu Yunqi, “Thank you, sister, for your sharp eyes. Otherwise, I would have fallen for her trick.”
Old Madam Wen thoughtfully added, “You should indeed thank the County Princess. She not only helped you but also saved you. Think about it, that woman wasn’t pregnant. If she had entered the household, she would have been exposed eventually. What would she have done then? She would have found a way to frame you, making it impossible for you to extricate yourself.”
Realizing the severity of the situation, Wen Ruyu broke into a cold sweat and solemnly bowed again. Xu Yunqi shook her head, indicating it was nothing.
After Miss Liu left, the ladies in the flower hall were still indignant, “Women outside have all sorts of tricks. Never get involved with them.”
“How can any woman willingly become a concubine? It’s simply degrading.”
“And some concubines have malicious hearts, harming the legitimate wives and climbing their way into the household.”
“Oh my, it’s simply unimaginable. Such people deserve to be struck by lightning…”
Madam Xun listened to their relentless condemnations, feeling as if she were being whipped across the face. Her entire body stiffened like wax. When she finally lifted her eyes, she happened to meet Xu Yunqi’s reproachful gaze and saw her blink innocently. In that moment, Madam Xun nearly suffocated.
“Madam, madam, what’s wrong…” Old nanny, knowing Madam Xun’s anxiety, pinched her hard, forcing her to snap back to reality.
Madam Xun, eyes unfocused, gasped and raised her hand, “Commence the banquet…”
As the banquet concluded, Wen Ruyu didn’t even stay for tea, hurriedly leaving to find her husband and settle accounts with him.
Madam Zhang also didn’t wish to stay any longer, so Xu Yunqi escorted her out.
Madam Xun watched the mother and daughter walk away, and as the guests gradually departed, she could no longer hold on and fainted into the old nanny’s arms.
Meanwhile, Xun Yunhe hurried back, apologizing and toasting each guest individually. Today, the Emperor had sent the Twelfth Prince, Pei Xun, to personally attend the banquet, giving Xun Yunhe great honor. After the banquet, Xun Yunhe personally saw him off.
A strong wind swept through the alley, lifting the corners of his crimson robe. He flicked his sleeves, standing with his hands behind his back near the screen wall, watching the Twelfth Prince’s carriage disappear into the distance.
Horses and carriages filled the bustling streets.
Guests bid farewell to him with respectful bows, and Xun Yunhe returned each greeting with a smile. Suddenly, he heard someone call his name from behind. Turning around, he caught sight of a graceful figure at the far end of the alley. A shadow from deep in his memory was instantly pulled forth, and he focused intently on the fleeting glimpse of green disappearing around the corner.
Instinctively, Xun Yunhe followed.
It was a green dress that Qing Niang loved, adorned with delicate yellow flowers, like a touch of beauty wandering through the forest. Closer, even closer, the dress was almost identical, and the slender shoulders of the figure were remarkably similar. Just as he was about to catch up, the person slipped into a carriage like a fish darting out of sight.
Xun Yunhe’s steps halted abruptly. As he was about to pursue further, a figure emerged from behind a wall, blocking his path.
“Lord Xun.” Xu Yunqi stood before him, hands clasped in front of her, smiling warmly.
Xun Yunhe, not noticing Xu Yunqi, eagerly looked past her but saw the carriage slowly moving away, disappearing into the dimming twilight. He then refocused on Xu Yunqi. “Why do you block my path, young lady?”
Xu Yunqi looked at him curiously. “What are you chasing, my lord?”
Xun Yunhe didn’t answer her. Instead, he asked, “Who was that just now?”
“My distant cousin.”
Xun Yunhe paused, realizing that since it was this young lady’s cousin, she must be very young. It must have been a resemblance in the back view. He rubbed his forehead, showing a bit of belated embarrassment. “Apologies, her figure resembled someone I used to know.”
Xu Yunqi smiled without replying.
As Xun Yunhe turned to leave, Xu Yunqi also got into a carriage, quickly heading to the south of the city. This time, she didn’t go to the clinic but to the neighboring clothing shop.
Xiu Niang, anxiously waiting inside, quickly approached her as she entered. “How did it go? Was it similar?”
Xu Yunqi looked at her with a complex expression. “He recognized your back.”
Xiu Niang patted her chest in relief. “That’s great. The efforts of the past half month weren’t in vain.”
This afternoon, the weather was not good. By dusk, the sky had completely darkened, with thick clouds gathering, heralding a heavy rain.
Xun Yunhe had to return to the office at night, so he had an early light meal and first went to the ancestral hall. With a creak, he pushed open the heavy door.
The wind swept in, causing the ninety-nine candles inside to flicker.
As usual, he stepped over the threshold, checking the ground for dust, then slowly walking forward.
On the altar to the north, the ancestral tablets of the Xun family were displayed. Among them, two brown tablets stood out prominently: one for his first wife, Madam Zhang, and one for his beloved daughter, Yunqi.
Xun Yunhe took the damp cloth handed to him by the steward and skillfully cleaned the tablets of the mother and daughter. Then he moved to the front and lit an incense stick. He heard footsteps behind him.
Without turning around, Xun Yunhe inserted the incense into the small censer. At that moment, the wind swirled into the ancestral hall, stirring up some dust that got into his eyes. He squinted and took a step back, quietly watching them.
A shadow fell at his feet, accompanied by a hoarse voice, “Every time I come to the ancestral hall, I can’t help but wonder, if Sister Zhang were alive, how would you place me?” Madam Xun stared at Madam Zhang’s tablet, feeling indescribably flustered.
Xun Yunhe found her question perplexing but answered without hesitation, “She is the wife; you are the concubine, without a doubt.”
The word “concubine” pierced Madam Xun’s heart. She looked at the slender, upright man in front of her, and the backbone she had maintained for seventeen years almost collapsed at that moment.
“I, the daughter of the Deputy Director of the Hanlin Academy, became your concubine? Xun Yunhe, you have a cruel heart. Can you face my father?”
Xun Yunhe thought of his broad-minded and wise mentor and closed his eyes deeply, “She is my wife by formal marriage, according to the rites and laws. Unless you don’t want to stay with me, this is how it is.”
After all these years, she had thought time would have eroded the answer. But he remained consistent. Only now did she realize she had always been a joke. For over a decade, they had supported each other, she managed the household and entertained officials’ wives, contributing both effort and merit. Yet she could never shake Madam Zhang’s place in his heart or erase the Confucian rites etched into his bones.
Even if he had hesitated for a moment, she wouldn’t have felt this much pain.
In that case, Xun Yunhe, don’t blame me for being ruthless.
A sudden heavy rainstorm arrived overnight, and the days quietly slipped into June. After a brief cool spell of just two days, the summer heat returned with full force.
Princess Consort Xi had been using the medicinal oil for several days, and her neck felt much more relaxed. Not only did she no longer feel pain in the morning, but even in the afternoon, she only occasionally experienced brief moments of discomfort. She felt noticeably more energetic.
This was all thanks to Xu Yunqi.
Princess Consort Xi, not wanting to be indebted to her, discussed with Nanny Hao how to repay Xu Yunqi.
Nanny Hao smiled and said, “You might not know, but this month is the Third Young Madam’s birthday. It’s her first good day after getting married, and it shouldn’t be neglected.”
Princess Consort Xi nodded thoughtfully, “We should indeed hold a celebration for her. Go and convey my wishes to Madam Xie and have her organize it.”
Nanny Hao acknowledged and immediately went to the council hall to find Madam Xie, the eldest daughter-in-law, to relay Princess Consort Xi’s instructions.
Madam Xie promptly responded, “I understand.”
After Nanny Hao left, Madam Xie closed the account book and handed it to a maid. “Put this away, and bring the ginseng my mother sent the other day. We are going to Qinghui Garden.”
The maid, surprised, asked, “Madam, don’t you usually avoid interacting with the Third Young Madam?”
Like Princess Consort Xi, Madam Xie looked down on Xu Yunqi’s background. Moreover, when Pei Muheng was recently granted the title of County Prince, his rising prominence highlighted her husband’s lack of achievements. The heir to the Prince’s estate had not been appointed, and the final decision was still unknown. Madam Xie felt apprehensive about the third household.
“Since Mother entrusted this to me, I must do it well. Let’s go and ask the Third Sister-in-law her thoughts.”
The maid had no further doubts.
The mistress and her maid prepared and went to Qinghui Garden.
It was Madam Xie’s first visit to Qinghui Garden. Xu Yunqi, a bit surprised, had been planning to tend to some medicinal plants in the greenhouse but was forced to stop and welcome Madam Xie inside for a conversation.
Yin Xing was busy in the small pharmacy preparing medicine. Madam Xie’s maid couldn’t resist peeking in, leaving Nanny Chen to serve tea to the two women.
Madam Xie smiled and asked, “Your birthday is in a few days. Mother plans to organize a proper celebration and sent me to ask if you have any ideas.”
Xu Yunqi promptly declined, “There’s no need.”
Madam Xie politely insisted, “I’m afraid that’s not possible.”
“Really, there’s no need,” Xu Yunqi’s face unusually showed impatience. “Please, inform Mother for me.”
Xu Yunqi’s resolute attitude puzzled Madam Xie. “Third Sister-in-law, I’m not forcing you, but it’s your first birthday since joining the family. Not celebrating would make the Prince’s residence appear discourteous.”
Xu Yunqi smiled and said, “Don’t worry, I have it under control. I won’t let this become a burden for the Prince’s residence.”
Uncle Zhou just brought news that Madam Xun took advantage of today’s clear weather to go out, apparently heading to Qingshan Temple outside the city. It seems she will be making a big move soon, so Xu Yunqi had no time to plan a birthday celebration.
Madam Xie, not being very close to Xu Yunqi, didn’t dare to insist, “I’ll inform Mother, but for such an important matter, you’ll still need to respond personally.”
Xu Yunqi nodded and remained silent.
In her mind, it was time for Madam Xie to leave. Madam Xie also felt awkward, glancing at the gift box she had brought. She gave a signal to Nanny Chen, who understood and quietly left, clearing the corridor of servants and maids.
Xu Yunqi had a vague idea of Madam Xie’s intentions and took a slow sip of tea.
Madam Xie didn’t intend to beat around the bush and directly pushed the ginseng gift box in front of her. “Third Sister-in-law, let’s not mince words. You must have guessed my husband’s ailment by now. Doctor Fan’s prescription worked for a while, but now it’s ineffective. He’s distressed, and I am worried. Can you help?”
Xu Yunqi maintained her calm demeanor and replied, “I need to take his pulse and perform acupuncture. Will he agree?”
Madam Xie felt troubled. How could such a matter be addressed directly, especially when the person in front of her was her sister-in-law? Just thinking about it made Madam Xie embarrassed for her husband. “Isn’t there another way?”
Xu Yunqi shrugged with a smile, “No.”
The situation reached an impasse.
Seeing her dilemma, Xu Yunqi sipped her tea and said, “I’ve treated no fewer than twenty similar cases.”
Madam Xie was speechless. She had great faith in Xu Yunqi’s medical skills. “I want to as well, but I’m afraid he won’t agree.”
Xu Yunqi didn’t respond, her gaze shifting towards the small pharmacy where two little maids were busy with something under Yin Xing’s rare, patient guidance, which piqued Xu Yunqi’s curiosity.
Although her request was denied, Madam Xie, unable to take back the gift, generously opened the box. “Third Sister-in-law, you’ve been in the mansion for so long, and I haven’t had the chance to visit you. Consider this a small token of my apology.”
Xu Yunqi glanced at the box, “No need.”
Madam Xie thought she was just being polite, “This ginseng was bought at a high price by my family. Please don’t reject it.”
Xu Yunqi sighed, “It’s not that I don’t want to accept it, but this ginseng isn’t good.”
Madam Xie’s face flushed, thinking Xu Yunqi was being disrespectful. Xu Yunqi earnestly explained, “Look, this ginseng smells strongly of medicine, but it’s been soaked in medicinal water. Genuine ginseng is rare, and good ginseng is even rarer these days.”
“I see.” Madam Xie felt extremely embarrassed. She hurriedly closed the box, looking apologetic. “I wasn’t aware of that. I’m sorry.”
She realized that Xu Yunqi was different from what she had imagined. Madam Li was cunning, and talking to her was tiring, but Xu Yunqi was pure and straightforward.
Madam Xie relaxed a bit. “Third Sister-in-law, I’ll persuade my husband again. If he agrees, I’ll ask for your help.”
Xu Yunqi nodded and saw her out.
Ever since Yan Ping left the Cabinet, Prince Qin had been like a monkey with its tail on fire, anxious and restless. Officials, sensing the change, were becoming increasingly uncooperative. In an attempt to maintain control, Prince Qin made various secret maneuvers.
To bring down Prince Qin, Pei Muheng had to plan secretly, leaving early and returning late every day. Xu Yunqi was the same, going to the clinic during the day and returning to the mansion at night. The couple mostly met only in bed.
Xu Yunqi kept a close watch on the Xun family’s movements.
Finally, on the tenth day of June, she received the news she had been waiting for:
“Sister-in-law, Master Mingyuan from Qingshan Temple has returned to the capital. I heard that on the full moon day of the fifteenth, he will set up an altar for fortune-telling. The ladies in the capital love to seek him for marriage prospects. I plan to ask him for a peace amulet.”
Xu Yunqi pinched Pei Mushan’s cheek with a smile, “Who are you asking for a peace amulet for?”
Pei Mushan blushed but admitted openly, “For Yan Shaoling.”
The imperial decree for their marriage had already been issued. Her marriage to Yan Shaoling was set in stone, and now they were just waiting for Yan Shaoling to recover fully and come to make the formal engagement.
“By the way, that day happens to be your birthday. We can go to the temple to pray first, then go to the cosmetics shop. Sister-in-law, Fu’er and I have a big gift for you.”
Pei Mushan cupped her cheeks and moved closer, her smile radiant and lively.
Looking at her vibrant and cheerful sister-in-law, Xu Yunqi’s eyes deepened, and she finally agreed, “Okay.”
In the evening, the family gathered at Jinghe Hall for dinner, and Princess Consort Xi brought up the matter.
“I won’t force you to celebrate, but I’ve heard that praying on one’s birthday is the most effective. You’ve been married for a while without good news, and your father and I are worried. On the fifteenth, let Henger accompany you to the temple to ask for a fertility amulet.”
Hearing this, Xu Yunqi felt a bit awkward.
Although the couple was diligent in their marital duties and the timing seemed right, there was still no sign of pregnancy.
Pei Muheng was momentarily dazed. If not for his mother’s reminder, he wouldn’t have known that the fifteenth was Xu Yunqi’s birthday. He felt a pang of guilt and quietly reached out to hold Xu Yunqi’s soft hand, replying to Princess Consort Xi, “Children come when they are meant to. We understand this, so you don’t need to worry, Mother. As for the fifteenth…” Pei Muheng turned to look at Xu Yunqi, “If you don’t want a grand celebration, we can hold a family banquet at home and invite your parents over for a small gathering. That would also be a celebration.”
He didn’t want to make his wife feel neglected.
Xu Yunqi quickly shook her head, “I want to go to pray.” Her eyes were more determined than ever.
Listening to his wife’s resolute tone, Pei Muheng felt strangely assured. Her willingness to have children showed her heart was with him. “Alright, but I have duties on the fifteenth. I’ll come to pick you up in the evening, okay?”
Xu Yunqi was not at all willing for him to come along, “Third Master, you’re busy with official duties. If you come, I’ll be flustered. If you’re not there, I can enjoy myself with my sister.”
Pei Muheng thought to himself, when had she ever been flustered? It seemed she really didn’t want him to accompany her. This was Xu Yunqi’s first birthday since marrying him, and as her husband, he felt he should do something.
The next day, a maid was sent from the Xu family to inquire, “Madam asks if there will be a birthday banquet at the Prince’s residence on the fifteenth. If not, she plans to accompany you to Qingshan Temple, as praying on one’s birthday is said to be the most effective. Madam also plans to pray for a fertility amulet since you have been married for over half a year without any news.”
The wording was remarkably similar to that of Princess Consort Xi.
It seemed Madam Xun had gone to great lengths to lure her and her mother into this.
Xu Yunqi smiled and replied, “Tell Mother that on the morning of the fifteenth, I will go to the Xu residence to pick her up.”
Despite saying that, on the afternoon of the fourteenth, Xu Yunqi made an early visit to the Xu residence. Madam Zhang had changed into a simple dress and was kneeling before the statue of Guanyin, burning incense and praying. Xu Yunqi pushed the door open and greeted her, “What is Mother doing?”
Madam Zhang turned around in surprise upon seeing her, “Why are you here? Aren’t we meeting tomorrow? Did something happen?”
“Don’t worry, nothing happened.” Xu Yunqi helped her to a seat and personally poured her tea, smiling,
“I suddenly remembered that Mother’s prayers are the most effective. When you personally wrote his birth chart and prayed, he successfully became the top student in the county school. I thought I’d ask Mother to write one for me, too.”
This was the first time Xu Yunqi voluntarily brought up Xun Yu, leaving Madam Zhang stunned for a moment, “Yes.”
The memories were so distant that she could hardly remember his appearance.
“Back then, after I sought the amulet, you somehow found a seashell. Your father placed the amulet inside and wore it. Later, he indeed returned as the top scholar.” Madam Zhang was lost in her thoughts.
Xu Yunqi wasn’t there to reminisce. She had prepared ink and brush, handing the ink-dipped brush to Madam Zhang, “Mother, tomorrow is my birthday and also his. Please write our birthdates on both sides of the paper so I can take it to ask for a peace amulet.”
Madam Zhang quickly wrote down Xu Yunqi’s birthdate, but when it came to Xun Yunhe’s, she hesitated, unable to bring herself to write, “Why do you suddenly want to pray for him? Do you miss him?”
Seeing others bask in their parents’ care, she didn’t have that, and deep down, she must miss him.
Madam Zhang’s heart ached.
Xu Yunqi was silent for a moment, then chuckled softly, “Maybe.”
With tears in her eyes, Madam Zhang wrote Xun Yunhe’s birthdate, stroke by stroke.
Xu Yunqi didn’t even glance at it. She let it dry beside her, and before Madam Zhang could invite her to stay for a meal, she took the piece of paper and left.
That day, Pei Muheng had a day off and returned to the courtyard early for a meal. “I need to go on duty later. I won’t be returning tonight.”
Xu Yunqi asked in confusion, “Aren’t you on duty tomorrow night?”
She didn’t want Pei Muheng to get involved.
Pei Muheng looked at his wife and replied gently, “I switched shifts with someone. I’ll be on duty tonight and come to pick you up early tomorrow evening. Then I’ll accompany you to the market.”
Since marrying her, Pei Muheng had never taken her out, and he planned to make an exception tomorrow night.
Seeing that he had made up his mind, Xu Yunqi said no more and instead asked about something else, “By the way, I need to go out tomorrow. Can I borrow a guard?”
Pei Muheng was puzzled, “I already arranged for Huang Yan to escort you. Did you forget? He’s the one who took you to the clinic the first time.”
Xu Yunqi remembered the young man who never pried into his master’s affairs and followed orders well. She liked such a person. “Is he reliable?”
Pei Muheng’s heart stirred, and he looked at her for a moment. The bodyguard he had carefully chosen was naturally reliable, and Xu Yunqi’s question implied she needed assurance for her purposes.
It seemed Xu Yunqi had something to do that she couldn’t tell him about.
Pei Muheng had no reason to interfere with her freedom, “I’ll instruct him later. From now on, he’s under your command, and I won’t interfere.”
Hearing this, Xu Yunqi smiled brightly, “Thank you, Third Master.”
It was rare for her husband to easily understand her intentions, showing their mutual understanding.
As night fell, Pei Muheng left.
Xu Yunqi watched his silhouette disappear into the night, then took a circle chair and sat in the middle of the courtyard.
Yin Xing loved swinging on the swing. Everywhere they went, she would always set up a bamboo swing in the yard, and this time was no different.
In the quiet of the night, the lush grass and trees rustled, and Yin Xing’s singing carried on the wind into Xu Yunqi’s ears.
Dressed in a snow-white long dress, Xu Yunqi sat in the circle chair, holding the piece of paper in her left hand, her right hand supporting her head as she rested with her eyes closed.
Her sweet, melodious voice flowed through the courtyard, attracting birds that circled above before landing on the wall to listen.
All the servants had been dismissed, and no lamps were lit inside or outside Qinghui Garden. Only the moonlight gently spilled over the ground, covering her in a silvery sheen. Her white dress fluttered gracefully, making her look like a ghostly apparition.
“My dear Nannan, you’re the best. When Daddy comes back, I’ll bring you some candied hawthorn!”
“When you were born, your father was so happy that he held you all night without sleeping, vowing to pass the imperial exams, enter the capital, and become a high-ranking official, making you the most dazzling pearl in the world.”
“All your toys were handmade by him.”
“He couldn’t bear to see anyone dressed more brightly than you. He worked carrying you on his back during the day and copied books by lamplight at night to earn money for your clothes.”
“Do you remember your silver bracelet? It was a treasure your father got for you after wearing out his hands…”
“Nannan, my love for you doesn’t compare to a fraction of your father’s.”
Silent wind whistled past her ears, rustling through the forest.
Xu Yunqi lifted her eyes, which seemed to be covered by a layer of cold mist, staring indifferently into the void. Her heart felt like an unfathomable abyss at times, and like an empty sky at others.
Yin Xing sang for a while until her throat grew tired, then asked, “Miss, for such an important matter, shouldn’t you inform Third Master? With his support, we might be invincible.”
Xu Yunqi shook her head, “No need. That man is his mentor. He has too many reservations and might not go through with it.”
Xu Yunqi didn’t tell Yin Xing that she was also worried Pei Muheng might ruin her plans.
The moon quietly rose to the sky and hid behind the clouds. Time passed unknown, and Yin Xing’s song, like a stream flowing into the sea, gradually quieted. The surrounding moonlight slowly faded, and the darkness enveloped the white figure in the circle chair, swallowing it into the depths of the night.
The master and servant sat like this for the entire night.
The first bird’s song at dawn pierced the sky, and Xu Yunqi opened her eyes. Her confused gaze slowly cleared, and the cold mist over her pupils gradually dissipated. As she stood, dewdrops fell from her skirt and landed on the tips of her embroidered shoes.
Morning had arrived.
It was time to set off.
Xu Yunqi sealed the paper she had held all night into an envelope and went to the slanted corridor between Qinghui Garden and the study to summon the secret guard, Huang Yan.
Huang Yan, having received Pei Muheng’s instructions the night before, knew from that day on his master would be Xu Yunqi. He knelt and performed a grand salute.
Xu Yunqi watched him silently for a few moments, then handed him the letter, her expression indifferent.
“At sunset today, deliver this to the Chief Cabinet Minister… Xun Yunhe.”
