Chapter 140: Not Holding Her Up?
“Different lines of work are like different mountains, you don’t understand, so don’t talk nonsense,” Gu Zhenhua said proudly. “My wife is a model worker in the factory. If she doesn’t work overtime, there’s a reason for it.”
Hearing Gu Zhenhua speak up for her, Lin Xiangnan’s expression changed from cloudy to sunny. “What our Gu Zhenhua said is right. Since you don’t understand, I won’t argue with you.”
It was Captain Wang’s birthday today, and Lin Xiangnan was a guest, so she kindly refrained from making a scene.
“I’m not arguing with you two. You two are a team.”
Captain Wang rolled his eyes and turned to complain to Chief Yu, the head of the security department. “I dare say, the most relaxed employee in your factory is Lin Xiangnan. He lives a life more leisurely than you guys in the security department.”
Chief Yu chuckled. “Xiao Lin just has good luck. You can’t be envious.”
“Yeah, you can’t be envious,” Gu Zhenhua said, taking the child from Lin Xiangnan’s hands and joining the other comrades in teasing the child.
Today was Captain Wang’s 30th birthday. Although not many people were invited, there were two tables full of guests. The food and drinks were all prepared by Luo Caixia, making it a very sumptuous affair.
Lin Xiangnan and the others at their table didn’t drink, so they left after eating. Gu Zhenhua and the others wanted to drink, so they opened a bottle of Moutai and chatted for over two hours.
Luo Caixia thought that Lao Wang was arranging things for her work, so she worked diligently all day.
In the evening, she asked, and Captain Wang said, “What are you in a hurry for? I’ll meet Chief Yu alone in a couple of days and naturally talk to him about work.”
After a tiring day, hearing this answer, the fire in Luo Caixia’s heart couldn’t be contained.
“Procrastinating, how long are you going to drag this out?” Luo Caixia said through gritted teeth. “If you don’t get my work arranged, I’ll go to your leaders and complain. You’re not behaving properly.”
“What nonsense! I haven’t done anything wrong, I’m clean as a whistle, and you insist on nagging. You want a job, I’ll find a way for you, but do you have to be so impatient about it? You’re from the countryside, you don’t know, go ask the city people, how hard is it to find a job?”
Captain Wang’s attitude directly made Luo Caixia cry.
“You said you’d help me get a job the other day, now you want to go back on your word?”
“Who’s going back on their word? I’m trying to find a way for you, aren’t I?” Captain Wang impatiently brushed her off.
But Luo Caixia had learned her lesson now. She wasn’t satisfied with Captain Wang’s attitude, so she immediately took the child downstairs. “I’m going to find Political Commissar Xu to do me justice… I’ll also go to the family quarters and find your regiment commander…”
She ran ahead, and Captain Wang chased after her.
The two of them started arguing in the courtyard, making quite a commotion.
Hu Meili was collecting clothes when she heard the noise and immediately said, “I’ll go take a look, I’ll try to persuade them, don’t let them fight.”
Men and women have different physical strengths, and if they really fought, women usually end up at a disadvantage.
When she knocked on the door, Luo Caixia’s hair was disheveled, and Captain Wang’s neck had been scratched by her fingernails.
As soon as Luo Caixia saw Hu Meili, she wanted to complain, “Lao Wang…”
Hu Meili immediately interrupted her. “On such a good day, why are you arguing? You two should talk things out, don’t let outsiders see the joke.”
After speaking, Hu Meili gave Luo Caixia a stern look.
Being glared at by Hu Meili, Luo Caixia regained a bit of her senses.
She glanced at Captain Wang and forced a smile on her face. “We weren’t arguing. The child is just being too noisy.”
“Alright. If you’re not arguing, that’s good. Talk things out properly, I’ll go back now.” Before closing the door, Hu Meili reminded Luo Caixia again, “Talk things out properly.”
Making a scene is a tactic, not the goal.
They weren’t actors, they didn’t need to make a scene for the sake of finding an audience.
Just making a scene is useless, after showing that you’re not easy to bully, you should fight for your own interests.
Hu Meili used to make a scene and throw a tantrum to deal with malicious relatives, useless men, and disobedient children… but in the past two years, her life has improved, so she rarely uses these tactics anymore, because there’s no need.
Luo Caixia’s current situation is even more difficult than Hu Meili’s back then.
It was only in the past few months that she managed to squeeze some pocket money out of Lao Wang by making a scene and throwing a tantrum. Before that, she had no money.
When Luo Caixia exposed Captain Wang little secret a few days ago, Captain Wang was afraid and guilty, so he easily made promises to Luo Caixia.
But as time passed, the guilt disappeared, and Captain Wang was reluctant to fulfill his promises.
As Hu Meili said, men’s hearts are fickle. Unfortunately, the work matter can’t be settled with Captain Wang signature and seal.
She had already threatened him, so Luo Caixia could only use another set of tactics.
“I’ve been with you since I was 20. You said you’d bring me to the city to live a good life. I gave birth to a daughter for you and took care of your three children…”
At this point, Luo Caixia was no longer fierce, she started to cry pitifully.
“Oh, what are you crying for again? I really haven’t done anything with anyone else.”
That complex emotion of fear and guilt surged through his heart again, and Captain Wang could only compromise. “From now on, all my salary, except what I send home, will be yours, okay? I don’t have any money on me, you should feel comfortable now, right?”
Captain Wang thought to himself: He could say he sent 30 yuan home and kept half for himself, he would still have money.
Luo Caixia’s crying subsided, and she asked through sobs, “What about the passbook at home?”
“What passbook at home? We don’t have any money left at the end of each month.” Captain Wang said confidently.
Salary is paid on time, medical treatment is free, and the unit takes care of living expenses. If there’s any urgent need, you can advance your salary, there are no worries, many people spend all their money every month.
However, Captain Wang did have a passbook, but he wasn’t willing to give it up.
Ignoring the money he had before, Luo Caixia was satisfied with being able to control Captain Wang future salary, but she still felt a little unwilling. “And about that job, you have to take it seriously.”
“I know, but it can’t be rushed. I have to find an opportunity to get you transferred in, Chief Yu can’t just arrange it without a reason.”
“Okay, I’ll wait.”
After calming her down, Captain Wang secretly breathed a sigh of relief.
At this moment, he explained, “I really have nothing to do with Liu Fengzhen from the kindergarten, you insisted on making a fuss. In the end, everyone’s face is lost. Can’t you just calm down?”
“You’ve given me control of your salary. You’ve also promised to find me a job. Your heart must be with me. I believe you.”
Luo Caixia said this with her mouth, but tears still flowed uncontrollably.
Even though she had argued with Captain Wang before, she felt that they were one, a couple. She never thought that Captain Wang would hook up with another woman.
Although they hadn’t gone as far as sleeping together. But Luo Caixia also clearly realized that her husband never loved her.
It was a thing that just thinking about it made her heart ache.
Captain Wang was still a little guilty, seeing that Luo Caixia wasn’t making a fuss anymore, he urged, “Go back to sleep. You’re always making a fuss.”
“Remember to ask about the job for me,” Luo Caixia said deliberately. “I’m going to work at that factory, I’ll personally keep an eye on that woman.”
“I know, are you finished yet?” After saying that, Captain Wang went upstairs to bed first.
Luo Caixia’s parents died early, and she didn’t have any elders around, so she could only talk to Hu Meili, the closest person to her.
She didn’t need Hu Meili to ask, Luo Caixia could tell her everything herself.
“It’s true that you can’t rush the job. It’s not bad to be able to manage the money at home,” Hu Meili advised.
“I’m just heartbroken,” Luo Caixia said. “I never thought Lao Wang was like this. I feel like I might not be able to rely on him for the rest of my life, I still have to rely on the children and the unit.”
Hu Meili sighed along. “You’ve made such a fuss, Captain Wang won’t dare to mess around anymore.”
“Yes, I cried and made a scene, he should be scared now. Even if he’s not worried about me and the children, he’s afraid of his own future being ruined.”
They didn’t avoid Lin Xiangnan when they were talking, and Lin Xiangnan ate this melon from beginning to end.
Seeing Luo Caixia and Hu Meili looking like they had won a victory, Lin Xiangnan couldn’t help but shake her head.
She found it very uninteresting.
Not to mention her friends, even when she was browsing short videos online before, if she saw a husband cheating, she would indignantly leave a comment in the comment section urging them to break up.
Finding a job in the future is easy. Making money is difficult, but it’s still very easy to make a living, there’s no need to compromise for marriage.
But now, Lin Xiangnan really didn’t dare to easily persuade Luo Caixia to divorce.
Without a job, Luo Caixia’s organizational affiliation would be transferred back to her hometown after divorce. Lin Xiangnan had personally experienced how tiring farming is, she couldn’t handle that kind of hardship.
Mental hardship and physical hardship, which one is harder, Lin Xiangnan couldn’t evaluate.
But if Luo Caixia divorced and returned to her hometown, she would most likely remarry, and then she would be unable to escape either mental or physical hardship.
The divorce rate in this era is low, but the suicide rate of rural women is high.
Compared to that, muddling through with Captain Wang had become Luo Caixia’s best option.
Just thinking about it made Lin Xiangnan feel disgusted.
Gu Zhenhua clearly hadn’t done anything, but he felt that Lin Xiangnan had been looking at him with a particularly dangerous look lately, even when he was getting into bed, he was very cautious.
Under Lin Xiangnan’s scrutinizing gaze, Gu Zhenhua said solemnly, “What are you looking at me for? I just took a shower.”
Lin Xiangnan didn’t listen to him, she just got close to his neck, like a puppy, sniffing here and there.
It was the smell of the soap at home, Lin Xiangnan nodded reassuringly.
Gu Zhenhua didn’t know what Lin Xiangnan was up to, he just naturally hugged Lin Xiangnan and kissed her. “I knew you missed me.”
Just smelling wouldn’t be enough, Lin Xiangnan took the opportunity to touch Gu Zhenhua’s abs.
After checking him from head to toe, Lin Xiangnan rolled into Gu Zhenhua’s arms before going to sleep, giggling and saying goodnight.
They stuck together for a while, Gu Zhenhua wasn’t tired of it, but Lin Xiangnan was the first to get tired.
When Gu Zhenhua finished showering and came over to stare at her, Lin Xiangnan nervously raised the notebook in her hand.
“I have to work overtime tonight.”
“Overtime?” Gu Zhenhua’s eyes turned resentful. “You never worked overtime at night before.”
“It’s just that we’re at the last minute now. We’re just missing this last push, the sooner we finish, the sooner we can relax and have a good New Year,” Lin Xiangnan complained. “Director Jin and the others insist that the factory needs to come up with results first.”
Everyone was working like old oxen, Lin Xiangnan couldn’t bear it either, so she took some urgently needed data home to process.
If she didn’t lend a hand, Sun Yi and the others would have to work overtime at night, and Lin Xiangnan couldn’t bear it.
She spoke reasonably, but Gu Zhenhua still questioned, “Why didn’t you work when you got home from work, why did you have to wait until night?”
“I have to play with the child in the afternoon,” Lin Xiangnan giggled and handed Gu Zhenhua a book. “If you’re not sleeping, you can stay at the desk with me.”
Lin Xiangnan worked overtime for an extra hour at night, something she rarely did.
She only worked overtime occasionally, Chief Engineer Zhang and Jin Baoguang worked overtime almost every night.
These dozens of people, after working hard for half a year, finally managed to build the helicopter before the end of the year.
Lin Xiangnan saw with her own eyes a behemoth come into existence from nothing, the sense of accomplishment was indescribable.
After the pride swelled, Lin Xiangnan couldn’t help but feel a little guilty, she poked Sun Yi’s shoulder and asked, “Can this thing fly?”
“Theoretically, there shouldn’t be any problems.”
“That’s a no-brainer,” Lin Xiangnan couldn’t help but roll her eyes.
Without a successful test flight, the task wouldn’t be considered complete. So after the inspection passed, Director Jin quickly contacted the test pilots from the army to conduct the test flight.
If there were any unreasonable aspects, their department would need to adjust the data.
On the day of the test flight, besides Chief Engineer Zhang and Master Li, technical backbones like Lin Xiangnan were also present. If anything went wrong, Lin Xiangnan would be on site and could respond quickly.
Because she was too nervous, before the test flight, Master Li and the others were still fiddling with the helicopter, while Lin Xiangnan went straight to the cockpit and sat down.
There were no chairs around, and she was too lazy to stand and wait.
After sitting for a while, Sun Yi shouted to her, “You can come out now, Director Jin is here, the commander is here.”
Lin Xiangnan leaned out of the cockpit door and looked back, just in time to see Gu Zhenhua, Political Commissar Xu, Captain Wang and a group of people walking towards them.
After their eyes met, Gu Zhenhua was embarrassed to make any big movements, but he couldn’t help but secretly raise the corners of his mouth.
Lin Xiangnan was also quite happy to see Gu Zhenhua here.
“I’m a little nervous,” Sun Yi swallowed and said, “Are those regiment commanders and battalion commanders next door all free? Why are they all here to watch the show?”
As soon as he said that, the smile on Lin Xiangnan’s face froze. If the test flight was successful, everyone would be proud, but if it failed, it would be embarrassing.
Lost in thought, when she jumped out of the cockpit, she almost twisted her ankle.
Gu Zhenhua was startled and rushed over to help her.
Chief Engineer Zhang had just arrived with Director Jin, and he saw Lin Xiangnan almost fall to the ground, while Sun Yi was in a daze, indifferent.
He immediately criticized, “What’s wrong with you, Sun Yi? You’re not even helping to hold her up, Xiao Lin almost fell just now.”
