Chapter 171: Aunt Hu Just Left
Nowadays, being a “soft rice” husband isn’t as good as it used to be.
Decades ago, marrying into a wealthy family meant climbing the social ladder. Now, people just assume the man is weak and incompetent.
Even though Lin Xiangdong and Zhou Kangmei’s situation isn’t exactly marrying into a family, outsiders still see it that way, and explanations wouldn’t make much difference.
Hu Meili said with worry, “Even if your brother gets a raise through his own hard work later, outsiders will say it’s Zhou Factory Manager’s credit. Even if your brother is naturally good-tempered, outsiders will say he can’t be the head of the family, that he can’t make decisions…”
Over time, it’s hard to say if Lin Xiangdong wouldn’t rebel.
Hu Meili didn’t want her son to be in a chaotic marriage in his middle age.
“That makes sense. Otherwise, there wouldn’t be so many ungrateful son-in-laws. Those big shots aren’t blind when choosing a son-in-law. They wouldn’t let their daughters marry a bad person. The most likely scenario is that those son-in-laws were okay when they were young, but they turned bad later…” Lin Xiangnan sighed, “It’s true that people can change.”
“Are you saying that about your brother? How could your brother become an ungrateful son-in-law?”
Lin Xiangnan was speechless, “You brought it up first.”
Don’t think she didn’t hear that.
Hu Meili meant that she was worried that Lin Xiangdong might develop psychological problems in this environment and cause trouble later.
Therefore, Hu Meili wanted to take the initiative and nip the danger in the bud.
Hu Meili just hoped that Lin Xiangdong would find an ordinary person and live a stable life. That would be enough.
Hu Meili didn’t mince words with her son. She listed all the disadvantages of marrying into the Zhou family in the letter.
Even if it wasn’t a family like Zhou Factory Manager’s, if Zhou Kangmei became tough, Hu Meili might not be able to handle her.
If they got married, if the couple had conflicts, Lin Xiangdong would only be bullied. Hu Meili wouldn’t be able to help much.
Hu Meili wrote while complaining to Lin Xiangnan.
“Two years ago, there was a batch of defective products on the production line. Zhou Kangmei scolded the team leader of that group for over ten minutes. An uncle-age man was scolded speechless by Zhou Kangmei.”
“I want to fight with Zhou Kangmei. The outcome is uncertain.”
Lin Xiangnan twitched her lips, “It’s rare to see you feeling inferior in this aspect.”
“I’m just afraid that your brother will be caught in the middle.”
Hu Meili quickly wrote two pages of the letter. After finishing, she immediately went to mail it, afraid that it would be too late and her son would already be seduced by the little vixen.
But her words didn’t have much effect. When Lin Xiangdong wrote back, his psychological defense had already been broken, and he had already made up his mind.
Hu Meili wrote to persuade him, and he explained each point.
When she received Lin Xiangdong’s reply again, Hu Meili couldn’t even get angry. She just felt helpless.
“What kind of words is your brother saying? Now that they like each other and their hearts are connected, that’s enough? Don’t they care about the future?”
Lin Xiangdong no longer believed in forever.
Before he was sixteen, he thought that after graduation, he would become a worker, a person like his parents. But the policy changed suddenly, and he packed his bags and went to the countryside to become an educated youth.
He spent many years in the countryside. When he thought he would stay there forever, Hu Meili suddenly called him back to the city.
Their family used to live a tight life, with no connections and not much savings. Hu Meili was able to buy a new job, which was completely unexpected to Lin Xiangdong.
After going through so many hardships, if Lin Xiangdong still planned his life based on a lifetime, that would be absurd.
He just wanted to live well in the present. As for the future, he would deal with it later.
Hu Meili slammed the letter on the table and said to Lin Xiangnan with a huff, “Your brother is just like you. He picks and chooses, and he chooses someone I don’t like!”
Lin Xiangnan casually used a nail file to rub her nails, “Don’t let Gu Zhenhua hear you say that. Otherwise, he’ll be heartbroken.”
“I’m not dissatisfied with Gu Zhenhua. I’m dissatisfied with the Gu family.” Hu Meili said disdainfully, “Now it’s even better, there’s another Zhou family. None of my in-laws get along with me.”
“Your children will have their own blessings. Don’t worry about them, just enjoy your life.” Lin Xiangnan comforted her, “Although I don’t listen to you, I’m living a comfortable life. Facts have proven that I’m right.”
Hu Meili slapped Lin Xiangnan’s hand, “Is that how you comfort people? You’re right for not listening to me?”
“You don’t like to hear the truth.” Lin Xiangnan stuck out her tongue at Hu Meili.
Hu Meili was the type who was bad at something but loved to play.
She wanted to control her children, but she couldn’t control any of them.
Children are also people, not mindless puppets. How could they live according to Hu Meili’s wishes?
Hu Meili was just making things difficult for herself by controlling so much.
“If you’re really that petty, just wait. You’ll have to get angry about your little brother’s marriage too.”
“But Mom, your temper is still good. At most, you’ll get angry for a while, and then it’s over. It won’t be too difficult to handle.”
Being teased like this, Hu Meili couldn’t save face. She put her hands on her hips and scolded, “Lin Xiangnan, are you taking advantage of me?!”
“Hee hee, just kidding.” Lin Xiangnan immediately softened.
They argued and bickered, but Hu Meili never got serious at home.
Like now, Lin Xiangdong didn’t listen to her arrangements. Hu Meili grumbled and packed her bags, preparing to go home.
After all, he was her own son. No matter how unhappy Hu Meili was, she had to help arrange things.
At this moment, Lin Xiangnan felt a little regretful, “I knew I shouldn’t have helped my brother persuade you. How long are you going to stay this time when you go back?”
“I’ll see then. You stay here for now. When things are settled, I’ll send you a telegram or write a letter.”
There was nothing Hu Meili was worried about in the family courtyard, so after giving simple instructions, she left by train.
Only Lin Xiangnan was left, holding the increasingly heavy child, and couldn’t help but sigh.
“The child has become chubby, section by section. It’s all because Mom spoils her too much. I have to make her lose some weight while Mom’s gone.”
Gu Zhenjun looked at Lin Xiangnan in shock, “Sister-in-law~ If Aunt Hu sees that the child has lost weight, she’ll be heartbroken.”
“What’s there to be afraid of? Just say the child has grown taller and looks thinner.” Lin Xiangnan bounced the child in her arms, “She’s about to become a ball. It’s not healthy.”
She wasn’t a doting mother!
Lin Xiangnan patiently accompanied Xiaobao to do some exercises, but Xiaobao didn’t cooperate. After playing for a while, she opened her mouth and said, “Ah~~”
No matter what Lin Xiangnan used to tease her, she remained unmoved and simply lay flat, ‘Ah~~’ing to herself.
“I give up.” Lin Xiangnan had no choice but to get up and make her some milk powder.
Seeing the milk bottle, Xiaobao ‘Ah~~’ed even louder.
“It’s not mixed well yet. Xiaobao, can you shut up for a while? Your mouth will be sour later.”
Xiaobao: “Ah~~~”
