Chapter 39: Hu Meili is restrained
In order to build this house, several uncles’ families owed a lot of foreign debts, so they didn’t prepare for renovation. They just moved in after the moisture dried up. They can slowly add more things to the house later when they have more money.
But Lin Xiangnan couldn’t accept the raw brick walls and cement floors. She brought back two buckets of putty powder and special cement from outside and started to direct Lin Xiangxi to work.
“Be careful, don’t drop it.”
“Don’t worry, sister, I used to work on the construction site when I had nothing to do, I’m used to it.”
It was summer vacation now, and there were not only Lin Xiangxi helping out, but also Hu’s family’s several younger cousins.
Lin Xiangnan only needed to pay some biscuits and candies to enjoy the supreme treatment, even water could be fed to her mouth.
“Take your time, no rush, I’ll treat you to ice cream after we’re done.” Lin Xiangnan took out money from her pocket and instructed the youngest sister to run errands.
“Little sister, go quickly, I’ll fan you, Sister Xiaonan.” As soon as the little sister left, another bootlicker took her place, “Sister Xiaonan, are your legs tired, I’ll massage them for you.”
There were many people working, the walls and floor were quickly finished. Then Lin Xiangnan started to move furniture into the room one after another.
The iron frame bed was welded by Hu Meili at the steel mill, Lin Xiangnan didn’t need to worry about it. She moved in a few solid wood cabinets from outside, as well as a dressing table and a desk.
Even though she was already very restrained, Hu Meili couldn’t take it anymore.
“You little rascal, that’s how you waste money?” Hu Meili gritted her teeth, “Give me the money. Mom will keep it for you. Don’t spend it all in a flash, you’ll be eating the northwest wind later.”
Lin Xiangnan smiled, “No money.”
“Can I believe your lies?”
Hu Meili went straight to grab Lin Xiangnan’s pockets, but she didn’t find a single cent.
She snorted at Lin Xiangnan angrily, and rushed up to the second floor in two steps, wanting to search Lin Xiangnan’s room.
But the door was locked, she couldn’t open it.
Hu Meili shouted directly from upstairs, “Lin Xiangnan! Where’s the key!”
Lin Xiangnan pretended not to hear.
Hu Meili kicked the door angrily, making a bang.
“Mom, if you break my door, I’ll break your pot.”
This threat worked. Hu Meili angrily went downstairs, glared at Lin Xiangnan, and started her performance of smashing pots and pans again, making a loud banging sound.
Lin Xiangnan knew she was angry, but she didn’t plan to coax her. Hu Meili was doing it for her good, wanting to save her money, but Hu Meili also had to understand that a grown child can’t be controlled by their mother, even as a mother, she can’t interfere too much.
This point, obviously, was better practiced by her grandmother.
She would eat ice cream bought for her grandmother without asking, and she pretended not to see Lin Xiangnan moving things into the house.
Hearing Hu Meili smashing the basin, her grandmother directly scolded, “What are you doing? Making such a racket. Can’t you be quiet?”
She was old, and she got annoyed by these noises.
Hu Meili made a ‘clanging’ sound, placing the basin heavily on the chopping board, “I’m about to be driven crazy by my child, and you won’t let me vent my anger! Didn’t you hear what Xiaonan just said?”
“I heard, what’s the problem? The child is grown up, why are you holding on so tightly?” Her grandmother said confidently, “Do you see me going into your brother’s room? Do I ask you to give me your money?”
“How can that be the same? We’re all married.” Hu Meili had been in charge of the children for over ten years, how could she let go so easily.
“Isn’t Xiaonan also of marriageable age? If nothing unexpected happens, she’ll get married this year. What’s the use of you worrying so much now.”
After leaving Hu Meili speechless, her grandmother gave her a warning glare before leaving, “Just cook. Don’t make any more noise.”
Hu Meili used to be the boss at home, not to say she was domineering, but she had been the head of the household for over ten years. Now that she lives with her parents, she suddenly has a mountain god above her head.
Lin Xiangnan gloated, walking into the kitchen with her hands behind her back, “Mom, don’t ignore the advice of the elders, you’ll suffer the consequences. You have to savor what Grandma said.”
Hu Meili sneered, put down what she was holding, went to the stove and grabbed a stick, and without hesitation, swung it at Lin Xiangnan.
Lin Xiangnan, what kind of level is she, how dare she make fun of her.
“Ouch, ouch, ouch!”
Lin Xiangnan was prepared, she dodged and slipped away.
It was one thing to scold, but now she was even using her hands, how could others just watch without doing anything? They all rushed forward to pull them apart.
Given Hu Meili’s bad reputation before, everyone went to reason with her, and Lin Xiangnan only received comfort.
Hu Meili wasn’t actually that angry at first, but when more people came to persuade her, her anger actually flared up.
“All of you, let go of me, I won’t be called Hu if I don’t beat her today.”
Her grandparents tried to persuade her for a while, but it didn’t work, so they immediately became impolite, scolding, “You don’t want to be called Hu, what do you want to be called? The child is so grown up, you’re losing face, what are you trying to beat her for? Can’t you talk to her privately?”
“How can I talk to her properly. I only used my hands because she wouldn’t listen.” Hu Meili’s tone was strong, but she was actually quite wronged in her heart.
Her grandmother retorted, “What does it mean to listen to you? Does she have to do whatever you tell her to do? I just tried to persuade you, but you didn’t listen, should I beat you too?”
She raised her own daughter, how could she not know Hu Meili’s thoughts?
If Lin Xiangnan was a good girl, then it wouldn’t be a problem to control her a little more. But Lin Xiangnan was clearly a rebel, and Hu Meili still had to try to suppress her. If this continued, the mother and daughter would eventually become estranged.
Her grandparents were trying to help Hu Meili, but Hu Meili only felt angry and wronged.
“My daughter makes me angry, and my parents don’t care about me. I might as well just die.”
Hu Meili threw the stick in her hand, went to the kitchen and grabbed a kitchen knife, holding it to her neck.
“I might as well just die~~~~”
Hu Meili’s skills in crying, making a fuss, and threatening suicide were top-notch. In the past, she had used it against Liu Laohei, and it had always worked.
But Lin Xiangnan didn’t buy it. She knew Hu Meili wouldn’t dare.
Not only did she know Hu Meili’s personality, but everyone in Hu’s family, except for the children, wasn’t scared.
Her grandmother took a deep breath and directly snatched the kitchen knife, “You don’t want to live anymore, right? Come on, I’ll help you.”
As she spoke, she moved the knife closer to Hu Meili’s neck, scaring Hu Meili into screaming and backing away.
“Mom!!! Put it down, put it down, quickly put the knife down.”
She was just about to die, but now she was begging for mercy.
Lin Xiangnan couldn’t help but smile, she lowered her head and pursed her lips, and she didn’t dare to laugh too loudly, afraid that Hu Meili would hear and get angry.
Not only her, but other younger people were also secretly laughing, looking at her grandmother with extra admiration.
One move and the battle was won. Hu Meili was easily made to know who was the boss of the house.
Forget about wanting to die, Hu Meili even cured her habit of smashing pots and pans in one go.
