Chapter 10: Putting the blame on someone
He leaned back slightly, then stiffly nodded. “Mm.”
Xie Yu didn’t dare look at Chang Suisui and forced himself to continue, “You’ll meet someone better. You deserve better.”
It was just Zhao Hang being blind.
Chang Suisui hadn’t expected Xie Yu to genuinely try to comfort her. For a big, stoic man like him, this was probably not easy.
She put away her mischievous thoughts and sat up straight again, continuing to munch on her apple.
Feeling the warmth beside him disappear, Xie Yu finally released the breath he had been holding. He turned his head to glance at Chang Suisui, watching her quietly nibble the apple—bite by small bite—like a cute little squirrel.
Just imagining such a sweet girl getting hurt by that bastard Zhao Hang made his blood boil.
But it was okay. He would make sure anyone who bullied her paid the price.
Seeing that Chang Suisui kept eating silently, Xie Yu carefully asked, “Do you… have any other plans?”
Like returning to the city, or maybe finding a more suitable partner?
As he thought about it, a stifling feeling welled up in his chest.
In his current condition, he couldn’t make her any promises. If his leg never healed, he’d only drag her down.
His gaze darkened, and he snuck a glance at Chang Suisui before his expression returned to its usual calm and composed look.
Chang Suisui bit into her apple and said slowly, “A plan… Would curing your leg count?”
Xie Yu chuckled softly, assuming she didn’t want to share her real plans. He played along and nodded. “Of course it counts.”
“Then once I’ve healed your leg, you can help me get back at the people who bullied me. Sound good?”
Chang Suisui smiled at him, her eyes full of playful mischief.
Xie Yu nodded with indulgent affection and gave a one-word reply. “Alright.”
He really liked her like this.
He had originally worried that the broken engagement would leave her emotionally shaken or wallowing in self-pity. But seeing her like this, he was completely at ease.
Good thing she hadn’t liked that scumbag to begin with.
More accurately… she probably didn’t even understand what “liking someone” really meant yet.
That was fine too.
It was just a shame that he couldn’t personally deal with that scumbag and that shameless woman for now.
The summer night carried a cool breeze.
Meanwhile, in the cattle shed, Chang Meili was crying softly in a man’s arms. But fearing she might alert Zhao Hang, who was staying next door, she kept her voice low.
When Xie Jianguo heard that Chang Meili had been locked up in the cattle shed, especially after rumors spread about her and Zhao Hang being involved in scandalous behavior, he couldn’t sit still and rushed over to find out the truth.
“Jianguo-gege, I didn’t do it, you have to believe me, wuwuwu…”
Chang Meili clung to Xie Jianguo, crying like a pitiful flower in the rain. Her tilted chin revealed her slender neck just enough.
She knew Jianguo had deep feelings for her—otherwise he wouldn’t have agreed to the painful decision to break off their engagement, or taken the risk of coming to see her now and even bringing her food.
She had known he was the one she could count on.
Xie Jianguo frowned, her sobs giving him a headache. He gently patted her back and softly said, “Meili, what really happened? Don’t cry. Tell me the truth so I can help you.”
Only then did Chang Meili stop crying. “Jianguo-gege, it was my cousin. She… she couldn’t stand the hardships of rural life and wanted to steal you away from me, so she framed me with Zhao Zhiqing. And I didn’t even want to break off our engagement, but she said if I didn’t, she’d hurt you… wuwuwu…”
She pushed all the blame for the broken engagement onto Chang Suisui.
Chang Meili knew that Jianguo was completely infatuated with her. He would believe her no matter what.
He’d always resented the breakup, and now that he heard there was a reason behind it, he definitely wouldn’t go down the same path as in the last life and end up marrying Chang Suisui.
As expected, upon hearing this, Xie Jianguo’s eyes turned red. “Meili, is that true? You really didn’t want to break up with me?!”
Chang Meili nodded repeatedly, throwing herself into his arms as she pitifully added, “I’ve always liked you. Why would I want to break up with you? If it weren’t for my cousin…”
“Don’t worry, Meili. I won’t let her get away with this! The one I like is you—only you!”
Xie Jianguo hugged Chang Meili tightly, his declaration sounding like a vow.
Her heart skipped a beat with excitement.
She thought of the tall, commanding man from her past life—the one in a military uniform, both elegant and sharp—who had once stolen her heart completely.
Now, looking at the younger version of Xie Jianguo, she felt even more impatient to take control.
If she wanted to be the future wife of a high-ranking officer, she had to seize this chance now!
Chang Meili gripped his hand tightly, gazing at him with teary eyes. “Jianguo-gege, I like you too. I know I said some harsh things when we broke up. You probably don’t believe me now… but I’m willing to prove my sincerity with my purity…”
Having lived a past life, she was very familiar with bedroom matters.
Controlling a man who had never had a woman before was the easiest thing in the world.
If it hadn’t been for Zhao Hang’s “performance issues” in her past life, how could she have failed to lock him down?
Xie Jianguo had always liked her. Now, hearing these words, his whole body was practically on fire.
He was just in his early twenties—how could he resist this kind of temptation?
But the era’s strict moral codes still made him a little nervous. “Meili, we’ve already broken off the engagement…”
Though he said that, his eyes were glued to her chest.
He dreamed of having a wife. Chang Meili used to look down on him—he knew that.
He was just a rural bumpkin, and she was a city girl sent down to the countryside. Of course she wouldn’t want him.
But now she was offering herself to him willingly?
Xie Jianguo was nearly overwhelmed with desire.
“Jianguo-gege, are you blaming me?”
Chang Meili deliberately pressed her chest against him and whispered, “You’ve always been the only one I wanted to marry. Even if we can’t be together in the future, just one night like this is enough…”
Before he could react, she clung to him and pushed him down.
Already aroused beyond reason, Xie Jianguo couldn’t resist her at all.
He didn’t even try to push her away and soon they were entangled together right there in the cattle shed.
Thankfully, they didn’t make too much noise, as Zhao Hang was just next door.
After some time, things finally quieted down.
Xie Jianguo, now satisfied, hugged the woman in his arms and swore with conviction:
“Meili, don’t worry. I’ll never let your cousin succeed! The only wife I’ll ever have is you—even if I die, I’ll never marry her!”
